Disclaimer:
I do not own Harry Potter, nor any of the characters from the books or movies. I do not make any money from the writing of this story.
Ch 14- save the Last Dance for Me
Disclaimer: JKR owns all that you recognize. I just like to borrow the characters to play...
A/N: I have truly enjoyed writing this story. I really tried not to take it into such a level of drama that it would not be enjoyable, but some drama inevitably slipped in anyway. ( I apologize for that!) Anyway, I promised myself that this last chapter would be one that was sweet and endearing., so enough with my yammering, and on with the finale!

Chapter 14 – Save the Last Dance for Me
When Hermione and Severus had parted, he told her a surprise awaited her in her room and he would be honored if she would wear it at the ball that evening. She had smiled and assured him she would gladly wear anything he asked of her.
Now, as she stood in her rooms looking at her reflection in the mirror, she was overcome with emotion. The dress was more than simply a gown fit for a queen. It was stunning. Silver threads wove intricate patterns across the light blue material, giving it an almost gossamer appearance.
It was fitted from breast to hip so well that it was as if it were a second skin to her. Then from thigh to ankle, it fell in sheer rows of shimmery fabric. The material was thin enough to give the slightest hint of the skin of her legs.
Her feet were adorned with silver heels that matched the thread of the dress perfectly. The heel was quite the highest she’d ever worn. Four inches with a strap around the ankle to show off it’s slender curve.
She had chosen to leave the back of her hair down, falling in shiny curls down to her waist. The front, she pulled up into a small, but elegant tiara. Matching earrings and a silver teardrop pendant hung at her neck.
Taking a deep breath, Hermione turned and made her way from her room. She also had news to share with Severus. She had been so curious at the idea of having a baby that she had used an old spell to scan for signs of life from the fetus with her wand. There had been no baby. It was for the best even though the knowledge had left her feeling a little melancholy.
She expected that Severus would be relieved at the news, because she knew that even if he did love her, their relationship was still new and fragile enough for them to need some time to themselves before they dedicated their lives to the care of a child.
As she descended the stairs into the ballroom, her eyes met and held with Severus’. He was dressed in black as always, with the exception of a dark green silk tie tied at his neck. His hair was pulled back into a ponytail secured with a matching silk ribbon, and his eyes glistened with emotion as they took her in.
When she reached his side, he gave her an appreciative once over before leading her into the middle of the dance floor. Everyone seemed to make way as he led her in an opening circle for the beginning dance.
She felt as if this was their first dance. Even though it wasn’t, she knew that this dance was not a dance shared between them because she had been dared to ask him. This dance was the first dance they shared as two acknowledged adults, admitting their passion for one another in the eyes of all around them.
As he led her through the steps she chanced to see Harry, sharing an embrace with Ginny, who held him close and swayed slowly from side to side. He met her gaze and smiled slowly before leaning down to kiss her.
Hermione smiled at the gesture of affection the two had shared before looking back at Severus, who had also seen the display. She prepared herself for some snarky remark but was pleasantly surprised when instead he simply caught her eye and gave her a seductive wink.
Dipping her low, he used the forefinger of his free hand to trace a line from the curve of her neck down the path her dress made, before placing a kiss to the hollow of her throat. Closing her eyes, Hermione gave herself over to the feel of his arms around her. The touch of his lips on her skin and the heady mixture of excitement and danger she felt with him.
She let him lead her in the dance and never missed a step as he twirled her around the floor. When the song finally ended the roar of applause made her look for the first time at the circle that had formed around them.
The entire school seemed to surround them, clapping ecstatically, making her blush and Severus scowl. When she saw his expression, she whispered the question, “Are you ashamed of me?”
He looked startled for a moment before shaking his head. “No, of course not. Why would you ask that?”
Clasping his hand tightly in hers she answered, “If you love me and want to forever be with me, then why be embarrassed at the notice they all take?” Her eyes sparkled when she fell silent and offered him a small smile.
Overcome by her beauty at that moment, he embraced her and kissed her passionately for all the world to see. As she opened her mouth to his assault, he realized, he couldn’t care less who knew of his love for her. She was the one witch that had been meant for him. That was true whether anyone accepted or liked it. It was fact, and there was no power strong enough to change it.

High above the festivities, Ronald stood next to Charlie. The two stood watching the emotion shared between his best friend and his once reviled professor. A sad feeling overcame him as he thought of all the what if’s that were happening at this moment. He felt a tightness in his heart at the thought that this wasn’t how his life was supposed to have turned out.
After the defeat of Voldemort, the trio’s lives were all supposed to be so much better. Now, looking at his friends, he couldn’t help but feel a twinge of jealousy. He could tell Hermione had found true love. As much as the idea turned his stomach, he knew deep inside that Snape loved her and would never do anything to hurt her.
Looking from them to Harry and his sister, he saw Harry look from the other couple’s display of affection to Ginny and shake his head for a moment before offering her a hesitant smile, which she returned. When he saw the two of them also giving in to their desires to kiss he turned from them to look at his brother. “Let’s go! Now! I can’t be here another second.” He closed his eyes against the fury he felt beating deep within his breast. “I won’t let anything happen to them, Charlie. They deserve their happiness. I’ll end it before I’ll let it take control of me.”
Charlie watched the couples for a moment longer before nodding. “Come on, then, Ron. Let me teach you the way of the Dragon Keepers. I think they will be able to help you get free of this anger that hides so deep within you. “ he smiled and chuckled. “There’s no greater pleasure that raising a hatchling. And when she bonds with you... ah, I can’t wait to share all these experiences with you!”
With a last lingering look at Harry and Hermione, Ron whispered, “Be safe, my friends. And may the hate that burns within me be exterminated soon. Else you may needs kill me when next we meet!” His silent fears at last spoken, Ronald turned and followed his brother out into the night where two dragons sat waiting. Mounting them and taking to the sky, he wished peace for his friends, even as he set off on his first adventure without them!
