chapter 14

Yup, so this chapter is kinda short, even for this fic, but never fear. There is another chapter after it that I will post tomorrow when I get out of work.

Chapter 14

Hermione played with DJ in his room for a while, afraid to go back downstairs where Draco was after what had just happened. Soon enough, Draco found his way into the room and stood in the doorway, letting a feeling of contentment wash over him.

Three hours later he was tucking a sleeping Hermione into the bed in the guest bedroom. He had had a house elf cook dinner for the two of them, with which she had imbibed more wine than he had ever known her to, even before DJ. Afterward he had carefully monitored her interactions with their son and she had eventually fallen asleep on the couch while staring at Draco, as though she were pondering something about him while in her drunken state.

Once she was safely in bed and checking on DJ, who was playing with some wizarding toys in his playpen that resided in the living room, Draco went over to the fireplace where he threw down some power and stuck his head into the flames as he called out for the Creevy residence. He ended up speaking to Colin, who told him that Ginny was putting the children to bed and he would send her over soon.

When Ginny arrived in Draco's living room it was to see Draco sitting on the couch, holding his son and telling him the story about when Hermione had punched him in third year. "Where's Hermione?" she asked, bringing Draco's attention to her.

"Sleeping. Would you like anything to drink?" he asked, playing host as he put DJ back into the playpen. When she declined he motioned for her to sit on the couch with him as he sat back down. "What did he say to her?" he asked, getting straight to the point.

When she finished telling the short tale, she would have been willing to admit that she was afraid of the look that had taken over the man's face. When Draco thanked and dismissed her, saying that he had to think, she was slightly worried of what was going to come, even if she hated the scum who had currently angered the man in front of her.

After all, Draco had been able to regain much of the power his father had held (a lot of it being heriditary seatings and such) in little over a month, though technically he had been working between the American and British Ministries verifying patents and checking if the same thing had been thought of elsewhere before granting them for so long many in the British Ministry knew him, even if under another alais. When they had found out that he was, in fact, Draco Malfoy, they had been impressed, considering that the man they had been dealing with the past years was nothing like what they had ever heard of the vain and pompous child he had been.

He had been easily accepted into the fold, largely because unlike his father, he did not act like he was entitled to such things and instead was able to get people to like him. He knew that it would give him much more sway in the future to be looked upon as someone that can be seen as human and caring for the welfare of his fellow witches and wizards rather than someone to be feared as Lucius had been.

After Ginny left he picked up his now sleeping son and put him to bed before going over to his study and writing a letter to Hermione's other best friend and leaving it with his owl under the direction to deliver it just before breakfast time. He then went to his own room and crashed into the covers after stripping down, wishing as he did every night that Hermione was the one doing it for him.

The next morning Draco insisted that Hermione and DJ stay for breakfast and after reluctantly agreeing Hermione proceeded to spend a large portion of the time apologizing for how she had acted the previous day and for getting drunk and leaving DJ for Draco to deal with. To which Draco kindly informed her that she had no reason to apologize, after all, it's not as though she's a lush. Also he pointed out that he thought that it showed that she trusted Draco to take proper care of their son even if she didn't really want to admit it aloud. Plus, DJ was his child and not something to be "dealt with."

By the time she left to go drop DJ off with her parents and head off to work, Hermione felt slightly less guilty and more at ease in Draco's house than she would ever like to admit. Not ten minutes after she had left a house elf popped in to tell Draco that there was a woman in the fire who wanted to see him.

He led Jess to the living room and told her what had happened the previous day. When he had finished she told him how Aaron almost had seemed obsessed with Hermione at times, never wanting to let her go but compelled to disparage the woman at every opportunity despite the fact that everyone saw through it. He knew that he had lost the best thing he had ever had and that it was all his fault. He had even told Jess so on one of his drunk nights, which came far more often than they ever had in the past. She thought that the remark more came out of jealousy that Hermione's child wasn't his own.

They talked for quite some time, neither having any pressing appointments that morning. While Jess didn't want her brother hurt, she recognized that he needed some kind of change in his thinking and helped Draco form a plan to rectify the issue despite the fact that she was worried it would just push Aaron further. She knew that there was nothing she could say to stop Draco and she decided that she would rather know what was going to happen rather than it be a surprise.

And so, right before lunch time was over, Daco apparated to Aaron's newest place of employment and stalked into the building as though he owned it. Which, coincidentally, he did.
