Foolish Pride

Chapter 14
Foolish Pride

Draco rolled over and looked at the clock. It blinked “3:00am” back at him. He could hear Hermione through the wall, screaming and crying. It was the third time tonight and had been going on for the past month.

He laid there, listening to her, feeling terrible pangs of guilt shooting through him.

Draco wanted terribly to check on her, to make sure she was okay, but he didn’t. He just laid there, waiting for her shrieks of fear to die away.

He hadn\'t had a good nights sleep since she left his room. Not just due to the fact the sounds of her nightmares woke him up every night, but because he missed her. There was no way he could get comfortable without her warm soft body beside him. He wanted so terribly to go to her and apologize. To take her in his arms and tell her how much he loved her, but he didn\'t.

“If I go to her, it just shows weakness.” he thought solemnly. “It’s like admitting I was wrong....I wasn’t wrong....”

Only slight sobbing was coming from the room, before silence.

He sighed deeply and turned back over, falling asleep.

********************************

He woke the next morning feeling more tired than he had been before falling asleep. He sat up in bed and scratched the side of his head before gathering his clothes and heading toward the bathroom.

He opened the door to find Hermione looking at profile in the mirror. Her tummy was just barely pouched out, like she had just eaten a large meal. They hadn’t really seen each other since the Ron incident, only glancing at each other slightly before disappearing into their respective rooms and if her top hadn’t been lifted and her pants pushed down, he would have never noticed it.

He cocked his head to the side, studying her profile. It was almost as if she was glowing.

********************************

Hermione’s fingers ran over her lower stomach and she smiled slightly. After resigning herself to the fact that there was really nothing she could do about it, she started to enjoy the idea of being a Mum.

She began to sing the alphabet while rocking her tummy back and forth and laughing softly to herself.

She caught site of blonde hair out of the corner of her eye. She turned to find Draco smirking at her.

The smirk quickly fell off his face. Hermione glared at him, pulling her tank top and pajama pants over her tummy, masking the baby from his sight.

He had a sad look in his eyes. It caught Hermione off guard. She contemplated what to do.

“Should I speak to him?” she thought. “Should I tell him how sorry I am?”

She bit her bottom lip.

“No,” she thought. “He was wrong. Let him apologize. It wasn’t my fault.”

They were a few moments of silence before she quickly shoved by him and disappeared back into her room.

Once she was safe behind her portrait door, she grabbed her duster jacket off the back of her desk chair and slipped it on over her tank top, tying the strap around her waist.

She walked out of their dormitory and headed toward Gryffindor Tower.

*************************************

Draco watched her leave the common room curiously.

“I wonder where she\'s going?” he thought to himself, then remembered he was angry with her.

He tried to concentrate on something else, but worry nagged at him.

He stood up and began pacing around the common room. He reached up and ran his hands through his hair.

“Should I follow her?” he thought.

He was angry, but he didn’t want to see anything happen to her. He sighed deeply before leaving the common room as well.

**************************

Hermione headed up the stair case to Gryffindor Tower. She gave the Fat Lady the password and stepped into the common room.

Harry and Ron were seated in two of the big overstuffed chairs chatting quietly, before noticing Hermione’s presence and stopping to stare at her.

She noticed Ron’s nose was slightly red and swollen as though it had been recently mended by Madame Pomfrey.

She decided it was better not to ask and headed up to the Girl’s Dormitory. She poked her head inside to see Ginny sitting on her bed.

“Hey!” she greeted her friend with a soft smile.

“Hey...” Hermione smiled. “Um....I....I think its time to go see Madame Pomfrey. Will you come with me?”

“Of course.” Ginny smiled, sliding off her bed.

****************************

Draco stood in the shadows and watched Hermione disappear into Gryffindor Tower. He felt a slight pang of anger shoot through him, thinking that she was going to try and make up with Potter and Weasley, but the anger quickly disappeared when she emerged moments later with Ginny.

He followed them and was slightly surprised when they ended up in the Hospital Wing.

He noticed no one else was there besides Madame Pomfrey. He snuck in and hid in the shadows.

“Ah, Miss Granger!” he heard the Medi-witch say. “I thought I’d be seeing you soon.”

She patted the stretcher beside her and he watched Hermione climb up on it and lay back.

She lifted her top off her belly and Madame Pomfrey pointed her wand at Hermione’s lower stomach.

A thick, red smoke, curled up from it forming the picture of a small being that looked slightly like an alien. It had tiny stumps the resembled arms and legs and its big eyes were closed tightly. Madame Pomfrey swished her wand slightly and a quick paced “thump, thump, thump” filled the room.

“That\'s the heart beat.” Madame Pomfrey told Hermione. She flicked her wand and the image of the tiny fetus disappeared.

“Well, Miss Granger,” She began. “It looks as thought you’re almost 3 months.”

He took a glance at Hermione. She was staring at the medi-witch, smiling slightly and Ginny was holding her hand.

“That should be me.” he thought, both sad and slightly ashamed of himself.

************************************

Hermione was listening intently to Madame Pomfrey as she explained about Hermione’s pregnancy. Suddenly, she caught the familiar flash of blonde hair out of the corner of her eye.

Draco was lurking in the shadows, watching everything that was going on.

“Why doesn’t he just come over?” she thought.

“Hermione?” Madame Pomfrey asked. “Do you have any questions?”

“Umm....yea, when is this morning sickness ever going to ease up?” Hermione asked.

The nurse just laughed.

“It should be gone by your 6th month, but some women experience it their entire pregnancy long.” she replied.

Hermione groaned and Ginny smiled and patted her hand.

“Is there anything else?” the nurse asked.

Hermione shook her head no.

“Well, if thats it, you can go if you’d like. Come back and see me in a few weeks for another check up, ok?” she smiled at Hermione before helping her off the stretcher.

As the nurse left, Hermione scanned the shadows for Draco, but he had gone.

*******************************

Draco re-entered the common room, still slightly dazed by what he had saw. He knew the baby was there, but it didn’t the reality hadn’t sunk until he saw it. It barely even resembled a human, tiny and curled up, but the burst of pride he had felt while looking at it was beyond anything he had ever felt before. He jumped when Hermione came strolling back into the common room.

She stopped and looked at him. Her eyes no longer held that glare of anger that had always been present lately. Instead they were soft and sad.

She turned away from him and walked into her bedroom.

“I’m going to talk to her tomorrow.” he decided, before heading off to bed himself.
