Revenge is a dish best served cold, but not at breakfast

Hermione and Snape went to breakfast the next day together, and sat at the staff table together. Dumbledore looked over at them with a concerned expression, but Hermione smiled at him reassuringly. Remus entered soon after Hermione and sat down on the other side of her.

“Morning my love,” he said softly, “I have spoken to Dumbledore about Malfoy, I promise I shall keep you safe.” Hermione glared at him angrily.

“I’m sorry, but I don’t need your protection,” she said coldly, “So you might as well give up now.” Lupin looked at her dejectedly.

“Hermione, if this is about hurting you, I promise you that I didn’t mean to! It was just I was angry and…”

“You couldn’t control yourself,” Hermione finished his sentence for him, “Funny, that’s what most women beaters say,” she hissed at him, keeping her voice low so that the other staff couldn’t hear.

“Don’t you think that’s a little extreme? I accidentally hit you once,” Remus said defensively, “and have been suitably punished.”

“Punished?” she replied angrily, “Remus, I wouldn’t waste my time trying to punish you. I’m doing the mature thing of moving on. Once you raise your hand to someone, they don’t come back.” Lupin sighed in frustration.

“Hermione, I love you, surely you can forgive me?” he pleaded with her. Hermione shrugged.

“No, I can’t. Or at least, I won\'t,” she replied coolly, “You have pushed me into the arms of someone else.” Lupin clenched his hand.

“Not Snivellous! Hermione, you cannot be serious!” he hissed, “Is this your idea of punishing me?”

“I told you before, I wouldn’t waste my time,” she replied coldly, “All you did was give me the opportunity to bring him back into my life.”

“For crying out loud Hermione, he abandoned you! Surely that is worse than accidentally knocking you to the floor?” Remus asked, frustration straining his voice. Hermione couldn’t deny that he was making a fair point, Snape had just waltzed back into her life, and she was letting him.

“Snape being in my life and me kicking you out of it are two separate issues,” she replied, “I will not be around a man who wants to put me in a cage!”

“How can you say that? I wanted to show you off, I was so proud of you!” Remus whispered.

“Show me off? You wanted me to do what you wanted. That’s why you were terrified of me being around Severus. He\'s my equal!” Hermione hissed coldly, “We just aren’t meant to be together Remus, I’m sorry.” Her sudden compassion pushed Lupin too far and he stood up and pushed his chair back aggressively. The hall fell silent and looked up at him,

“I didn’t think you would lower yourself to Snape again merely for revenge!” he hissed at her, causing her to blush as the entire school watched Remus storm out of the room. The staff turned to look at her, and she burst into tears before running from the room also. Snape stood up and chased her out.

Remus Lupin went straight to his room and sat down at his desk, before writing a letter to Lucius Malfoy.

Malfoy, I am working on having Hermione sent to you, but I must insist that you disregard my previous comment regarding hurting her. Just don’t kill her

As he watched the owl fly from Hogwarts, he couldn’t help smiling to himself.
“Two can play at revenge.” He hissed.
