the Bonding

Chapter 14: Bonding

Later that night...

Lucius awoke to the feeling of two bodies wrapped around himself and the soft, comforting warmth of them. He also awoke to nausea and the urge to vomit. Little did his loves know, but he did have experience with hangovers, and for just this instance, he had invented a charm to rid oneself of them. With a quick flick of his wrist and a muttered rhyme, Lucius was clear-headed and hangover-free.

He raised his head a tad to look down on the sleeping forms of his two beloveds. They were lying peacefully on either side of him, cuddled up against his body. But to his surprise and great satisfaction, they were holding hands across his stomach. ‘At last. If only they were like this when they are awake.’ Little did he know that they had made peace and were ready for their future together with him.

As the dawn slowly broke through the Saturday morning cloud cover, the three boys continued to sleep, unaware that they lay observed. Their audience was one not of the physical or magical kind, but of the spiritual and metaphysical. It was anyone’s guess if it was for good or for ill.

‘Well, it’s good to see that we granted his wish, but who was it that did this?’ a disembodied voice asked. The sound of her ringing tones brought to mind the screams of mothers in birth, the cries of joy in sex, the belling of hounds on the scent, the rattle of death from an ancient’s throat... She was known under many names and many guises, the Earth Mother, Aphrodite, Isis, Freya, Vanth, Oya, and others besides. She was know to the Irishman as simply Danu.

‘That would be me. His thoughts when they reached us were not of the best quality. I thought he deserved to be given a lesson. What better way to do so than for him to realise them hisself?’ His voice was like honeyed hemlock, something so sweet you wouldn’t notice the poison as it slipped down your throat, a faded echo of his essence. He was known as Loki, Olifat, Qat, Aker, Adonis. His many aspects varied, but at the moment, Lucius knew him as the Horned One, consort of the Mother.

‘Now why would you do a thing like that? You know he is one of my favourites. Why were you trying to cause him pain? I only saw what you were doing at the last minute. If I hadn’t intervened, he would have been miserable.’ She did not seem to understand that that had been the point of his schemes, and that he was jealous of the attention the mortal got. ‘Oh, so that’s why. You wanted to punish the mortal because I favoured him? Now isn’t that petty? For his lack of appreciation for the gifts I have given him, I shall punish him myself. Does that make you happier? After all, it’s you who are my consort, not he.’

That did make the god smile, for he knew that the mortal would never be so blessed as to so much as look upon the face of his goddess. Onle once before had a mortal looked upon the true visage of her, and he had been both blinded, rendered mute and insane with the most stunning of knowledge. ‘Fine. May I choose the punishment, but have you administer it?’

If only the mortal in question knew that he had both caused and mended a rift between gods. ‘Alright, but don’t be too cruel dear.’ Danu looked upon the face of her son and lover with joy and forgiveness.

‘Let him know the thoughts and emotions of the ones he had thought to toy with. Let him know every pain he inflicts on them as if it were his own.’ With a malicious smile, so was Lucius condemned.

When the three boys awoke to golden sun shining on their faces, they each smiled and thought, ‘This is exactly where I want to be.’ Or did they? In fact it was only Lucius’s thought echoing through the three of them. When this realisation hit them, they sat bolt upright and looked each other in the eye, finding only mutual panic and confusion. Their thoughts echoed their emotions, blending into a cacophony of fear.

Draco held up his hand, drawing their attention while he attempted to calm not only himself, but the other two as well. ‘Is it only me, or are we sharing thoughts?’ he asked silently.

‘It’s no just you.’ Lucius thought. ‘I think we can hear each other, all of us.’

‘Oh dear, this will be awkward. Do you have any idea of how to shut this off? I mean it’s nice and all to know that you think both of us are sexy as hell and... Oh my, you are a naughty boy, Draco. But let’s be realistic here, we can’t go around like this all the time. Can we?’ Harry was surprisingly calm after Draco had taken the reigns of their panic. His thoughts had naturally been directed to him, but had included Lucius in their asking.

“I have no idea,” Draco said aloud. He was more than a little bit frightened by this unexpected turn of events. He needed to vocalise before his mind started screaming. “B-but... I-I think w-we are bonded.”

His comment fell onto horrified and confused ears. Lucius started at him in terror and harry in confusion. “Bonded...What the hell are you talking about? Bonding only happens between two people who balance each other. We can’t be bonded... Can we?” Harry seemed to be all questions that morning.

Lucius looked into the nether space of the room, looked into himself for the answer and heard a whispering and laughing somewhere in the vicinity of his soul, where divinity rested. “I think it is meant to be a punishment. For me. I’m meant to be punished. But what did I do? Bonding with more than one person has only occurred once before. It was in 3024 BCE. The gods were punishing a witch who had purposely seduced a brotherhood of Egyptian priests. She fucked them and made them fall in love with her, then left them to pine for her until they died for lack of her touch. In punishment Isis and Horus made her feel each emotion, each thought, of each priest until the day that they died, not allowing her to die before them. It was done so she would understand the power of love. I know I seduced you, both of you, but I fell into my own trap. Why would They do this to me? What have I done?”

The two boys stared at their shared beloved with shock. The could feel the self-recrimination, the guilt, confusion, anger, swirling through his mind and magic. In tandem, they reached for him, to comfort and be comforted. “I don’t care if it is meant to be punishment. We will make it a blessing.” Harry said, all the love and devotion he held in his voice.

“So mote it be.” A shiver went through reality with Draco’s words. Existence, Fate itself had shifted and resettled itself, with something changed. The Powers-That-Be, the powers above thoughs of magicians, gods, and would-be gods, the very wellspring of life and magic, had been holding their breath, waiting for those words to be spoken. Nothing would be as it was, whether for better or worse was still a question to be answered.
