Chapter 14 Reborn
“No one will be leaving this room while the Headmaster is gone,” Professor Snape said as he looked at Ron and Harry.
Harry and Ron merely looked at Professor Snape in distaste. Hermione could sense the rising tension in the room and decided to change the subject.
“I meant to tell you guys about the research we’ve been doing. I think we can adjust the Tactile Contact theory it’sit’sit’s easier to use. Professor Snape and I have found that just physical contact with another person is enough to keep yourself grou dur during an encounter with dark magic,” Hermione said quickly.
“What kind of ‘physical contact’ do you mean?” Ron asked eyeing Professor Snape suspiciously.
“Just holding hands can help. The presence of someone else can keep you from getting sucked in,” Hermione responded with a quick look at Severus.
A look of disgust came over Ron’s face as he realized that this meant that Hermione had been holding hands with the dreaded Professor Snape. Suddenly he looked away and angrily strode to the window beside Harry.
“She’s been holding hands with that horrid man!” Ron whispered to Harry.
“I heard her. If it’s helping her research, I can’t blame her. We need all the help we can get. Besides, I’d much rather hold your hand than have to whip it out in front of Voldermort,” Harry replied.
“Do you think she likes him? I mean, she’s holding his hand and doesn’t seem grossed out about it,” Ron said.
“She only does it when they are working on their research.”
“No, she’s holding his hand right now,” Ron said after a quick look over his shoulder at Hermione and Professor Snape.
“What? Are you serious?” Harry asked, horrified.
“Yes, I’m bloody serious. I just looked over there and she had her hand in his. He was even rubbing his thumb over her hand,” Ron whispered again.
“Oh my God. Maybe Hermione and Professor Snape…” Harry trailed off because he couldn’t bear the thought of finishing that sentence.
“No, I can’t believe that. Hermione would never be so silly,” Ron said matter of factly.
Hermione watched the boys whisper about her near the window. Of course they were asking each other if she and Severus were having some kind of relationship. Everything happening in such a short span of time had Hermione’s head reeling.
If Pssorssor Snape really did want to be with her, how would they make it through the last year of Hermione’s schooling? It would be pretty awkward to sit in Potions class while Severus taught. Talk about hot for teacher. She wouldn’t have to imagine him naked, she could just remember.
And what about getting time alone together? Well, they could continue working on their research, and that would give the two an excuse to sneak off for a few hours. But eventually someone would notice. Even now, with the relationship as fresh as this morning, Harry and Ron were on to her.
Questions continued to dance through Hermione’s head when suddenly Harry began shouting.
“There she is! Myrtle is coming out of the woods,” Harry called out.
“Yeah, I see her too. But she doesn’t look too good,” Ron said.
Professor Snape swooped over to the window. No, Myrtle did not look to be in good condition at all. In fact, she wasn’t even floating. She looked to be walking. But how was that possible?
Hermione shoved in next to Severus to see what was happening, “I can’t see a thing this far away.”
Hermione pulled out her wand and conjured up a pair of binoculars.
“That’s better,” Hermione said as she brought the binoculars to her eyes. “Oh my. Myrtle doesn’t look like a ghost anymore. She looks human! And she looks to even be bleeding!”
Hermione pulled her eyes away from the binoculars to look at the group around her.
“Do you think Voldemort might have brought her back to life?”
“It’s possible. But the Dark Lord would need Myrtle’s body to restore her to it. However, he certainly isn’t above robbing a grave,” Professor Snape responded.
“Why would they give her back her body only to beat her up?” Harry asked.
Hermione raised the binoculars to her eyes again. Myrtle had slumped to the ground and was lying very still.
“I think we may need to go down there and help her. She looks to be hurt badly. If she is alive again, she’s no longer the perfect double agent. Now her life is in danger,” Hermione said with authority.
“I wonder if the Headmaster knew this would be coming when he said for no one to leave the castle?” Professor Snape speculated. “I will go help her. You will all stay put until Professor Dumbledore comes back.”
“To hell with that. If you’re going, I’m going with you,” Hermione said as she strode to the door.
She knew she was undermining his authority, but Hermione couldn’t just stand by while Severus risked his life. Professor Snape couldn’t think of any way to stop her and still maintain his dignity in front of Potter and Weasley. The woman would be the death of him.
Instead of fighting her, Professor Snape followed her out the door. Harry and Ron took one look at each other and raced after the others.
