Chapter Thirteen

Hermione heard yelling coming from the sitting room. Getting up, she got dressed quickly. She had known this moment would be coming one way or another. She had only hoped that it wouldn’t have been so soon. Professor Minerva McGonagall had found out about the new living arrangements. She went out of the bedrooms, watching the older witch screaming at Severus.

“This is a school! What were you thinking moving her into your rooms?” she exclaimed, in a pitch that dogs were the only ones likely to hear. “What will the parent’s think?”

“Considering what else is going on at the moment, I would think that the last thing that might be occupying their minds is our relationship,” Hermione was the one to answer.

Minerva spun around. “Miss Granger, I would have thought of all people that you would have more common sense than to-to take up residence with the new single headmaster of this school!”

“Why?” she asked casually.

“He’s old enough to be your father!”

“He isn’t my father,” Hermione murmured.

“What will your parents think?” the older witch shrilled.

“If they were alive, they would more than likely point out to you that they lived together for ten years before getting married and having me,” Hermione said casually. “That’s if they were alive.”

Minerva blanched. “They were killed?”

Nodding the younger witch replied, “And as much as I think you are a good person doing what you think is the right and just thing, I also believe my relationship with Severus Snape is none of your business.”

Minerva gapped at the young woman in shock.

Severus walked over to Hermione, combing her hair out of her face. “How are you feeling?”

“I’ve been better,” she murmured. “I’m going to lay down again and do some reading.”

Severus watched her as she walked back over to the bedroom again. He turned back over to Minerva, who looked like she had been sucking on a lemon by that point.

“Have I ever ask you for anything?” he asked her in a low voice. “Throughout everything, have I ever made one demand, request, or plea?”

“No, but…”

“Minerva, for Merlin sake why are you being a hard ass about this?” She gapped at him. “The school year has yet to start and those here are so because they have no where else to live. The same goes for Miss Granger. And
now thanks in part to the work she’s doing, there have been people trying to hurt her.”

“Are you saying that you are in no way physically involved with Miss Granger?”

“No, I can’t. Because I want that witch and sooner or later we will be, as you put it, ‘physically involved’.”

“Are you saying that she wants you as well?”

“Yes, thank Merlin, that she does,” he murmured.

“But I thought you loved Lily Potter,” Minerva whispered.

He nodded. “I did. Enough to die for her.” He took a deep breath and breathed, “But now I have Hermione and I want to do for her what I never could do even for Lily.”

“And what’s that?” the older witch asked genuinely curious.

“Live.”

“Eat.” Severus sat down next to her to do the same. “With any luck this time you’ll be able to start and finish the meal all in one sitting.”

Smiling she picked up her spoon, saying, “One can only hope. I don’t think I’ve had an uninterrupted meal since I’ve returned.” Hermione no sooner put the spoon into the bowl than there was a knocking on the front door of the rooms. “I would say it was a conspiracy, but I could have eaten earlier.”

“I’ll get that,” he told her as he got up. “You stay here and try to eat something.”

He had no sooner opened the door when none other than Luna Lovegood came strolling into the room, looking around in her usual impish way.

“Miss Lovegood, what are you doing here?”

“I needed to speak to Hermione,” she answered lightly. “Were you having supper? Whatever it is smells delicious.”

“What did you need to speak to Miss Granger about?” he asked, watching as she sat down casually.

“Nothing of great importance.”

“If it wasn’t important, something tells me you wouldn’t be here, Miss Lovegood. Try again.”

Her lips turned up slightly at his words. “I suppose I could come back later. Will you please let her know that I stopped by?”

“Certainly.” Walking her to the door he also added, “Until later then.”

He went back over to the table, sitting down. “Something is going on that Miss Lovegood didn’t wish to say to me even as a part of a message.”

Hermione thought it over. “You never quite know with Luna. She is an odd one. Smart as a whip, but very…unique.”

As soon as she was finished eating, she cleaned herself up. Kissing his temple, she murmured that she would be back. But before she could walk away, he caught her arm and tugged her back.

“You know what to do if you need me?” he asked. When she didn’t answer, he pressed a coin into her hand. Curling her fingers around it, he kissed her knuckles. “Keep safe.”

Smiling she kissed his mouth lightly. “I’ll call if I need help.”

Hermione found Luna at the library. Sitting across from the blond Ravenclaw, she waited for her to finish the sentence she was reading to speak.

“Hello,” Luna said casually in her singsong voice. “Have you heard that Draco Malfoy is now in residence?”

“I knew he would be here within the month, but not so soon,” she murmured.

Luna nodded. “Yes, both mother and son are here due to the fact Malfoy manor is being torn down. Already Draco and Harry are at each other’s throats. They challenged each other to a duel.”

“When?” Hermione asked, standing up.

“Last I heard it was tonight after dinner,” her friend told her. “What are you going to do?”

“Have a chat with them,” she murmured. “Thanks.”

She found Harry surrounded by girls in Gryffindor tower. Lavender was practically sitting in his lap. Rolling her eyes, she went over to Harry and yanked him up by his ears.

“Come on with you,” she said. “We need to talk.”

“Wait just one second…” One of the girls started to complain, but soon was hit with a stream of icy cold water and ended up screaming with the rest of the young witches getting drenched.

Taking him over to her office, Hermione sat him down with the strict order not to leave the room. To ensure this, she locked and warded the chamber. Soon she was down in the dungeons, speaking to Mrs. Malfoy. She nodded, going into the Slytherin dorms and was out within seconds with Draco in tow.

Hermione thanked the older witch, taking Draco away with her straight over to her office. When they stepped in, they found Harry on the floor trying to get up. He had more than likely tried to get out of the room, she thought sourly. Rolling her eyes she went over and helped him to his feet.

“Please sit the both of you,” she muttered, waving to the chairs as she shut the door and went to her own chair. Once they were both seated, she asked, “What in the name of Merlin were you thinking to say that you were going to have a wizarding duel?”

Harry’s head lowered a bit and Draco rolled his eyes.

“Need I point out the obvious?” she inquired. “Because I will if necessary. I never thought you two were dim witted enough to have it put so, but I can do it if called for.”

“Why are you doing this? I wasn’t aware that you were the headmaster,” Draco pointed out snidely.

“No, I’m not the headmaster,” she conceded. “What I am is your parole officer, Draco.” His face went flush at her words. “I warned you. And what I’m doing here is circumventing what could have turned out to be a disaster!” When Harry let out a snort of sardonic laughter, Hermione’s hard eyes went to him. “And you, you of all people should know better.”

“Hermione, I don’t need…”

“You don’t need what?” she cut him off. “The responsibility or the respect? Or do you think that the only thing you should be is awarded with are the girls over in Gryffindor tower all but sucking your cock?” Harry’s face went beet red. “You two are quite a pair. The children look up to you both and the best solution you can come up with to settle any argument is to fight a duel?”

“So we won’t have one,” Harry said.

Leaning back she murmured, “I thought you were sick of fighting. Was I wrong?”

The two wizards looked to each other and back over to her. They didn’t need to answer as what they were thinking was on their faces. Both were sick of it. But did they know how to stop fighting when that was all they knew how to treat each other? Hermione only wished that she knew the answers to give the two wizards. Left with no other choice she was going to the one person she knew would have some form of answer for them. Whether it would make sense that was another story.
