At five thirty Lily could hear idle, muffled chatter through her bedroom door. She pulled on a thick sweater, and her new school cloak. “Hey guys,” she said emerging into the rather hot common room. If she stayed there for too long, she would be sweating. Lily could see that everyone else had discarded their robes on the back of the couch. The fire cracked invitingly as the small group turned around when Lily closed the door.

“It’s about time,” Bridget said with a smirk. She had nestled her way in between James and Amy, with Phoebe on the end. It was a couch made for three, with four people, and two empty seats left. It was blatantly obvious that Bridget had a major crush on James.

“Hey,” James said looking at her with a smile. He removed his hand from the back of the couch where it had been resting, since it had no room other place, and shook it lightly because it had gone numb. “Ready to go?”

“No…” Lily said then sighed. “But let’s leave now before I change my mind,” she replied as the rest of the group rose from the couch. They all filed down the stairs, Remus and Donna leading the way, followed by the rest of the group followed behind.

There were small casual conversations as they made their way outside, and people were watching them as they left. They could leave the school an hour before the show to get a seat if they liked, but no sooner, since final preparations needed to be made, and they didn’t need to sit for an hour and a half before the show.

Even with her thick cloak, the cold of the outdoors slapped her body painfully, and Lily let out a shiver. She lingered in the back of the group, opting to stay out of conversations because she was too nervous to really talk at the moment. All she could think about was having to be in the same room with Sirius, not to mention having to kiss him and be intimate.

James was trying to humor Bridget by talking with her, but he kept looking over his shoulder at Lily. She was holding herself as she walked to keep herself warm, and he could see the look of anxiety on her face. He was careful to end his conversation with Bridget lightly before slowing down until he was in step with Lily. “How are you doing?”

“Huh?” Lily asked coming out her thoughts, and turning away from the woods to look at James. “Oh…um I’m alright,” she said quietly before sighing, and dropping her arms at her sides. “I’m scared honestly.”

“You’ll be alright,” he said putting his hand tentatively on her shoulder. He was still wary around her, afraid she may turn to hating him once again with one wrong move.

“I hope so,” Lily replied as the gravel pathway gave way to the cobblestone streets of Hogsmeade. The theater was within sight, and she took a deep breath before crossing the last couple of yards to enter. “I’ll see you on stage,” Lily said to James once they entered the back door, and she headed to the girls dressing room, and James went to the boys.

When James pushed open the door he found a very frantic costume manager running around, with people do hair and make-up crowding the space. There was hardly any room to breathe, never the mind change. James was whisked up by a makeup and hair artist who told him to remove his shirt promptly so they could start. He heard them babble about how his shirt would mess his hair and make-up up if he pulled his shirt over his head when he moved to protest. He didn’t bother to tell them that he had to pull his costume shirt on, sure they would have a mini stroke.

James took a seat in the chair after it was pointed to him, and looked in the mirror to see Sirius next to him, practically being pulled apart. “Ready for tonight?” James asked with a smirk as Sirius winced when his hair was pulled.

“Yeah, you?” Sirius asked him as he squinted his eyes in pain.

“I think so, I don’t do all that much,” James replied before he was attacked by a makeup brush working on its own. He worked on blocking out what happened between Sirius and Lily to get back to being friends again. Everyone messed up some times, and Sirius was still the same guy James had grown up with.

Meanwhile Lily was the center of attention in her dressing room. Two makeup and hair artists were arguing on how to do Lily’s hair, giving Lily no say. Eventually they compromised and did Lily’s hair down, with two pieces of hair twisted in the front, and connected in the back with a gold clip. They curled the ends of her hair to give it more volume, and added a few bits of charmed baby’s breath, and decided it was done, simple, yet elegant. Her face however was much more intricate.

They paled her face, shoulders, and chest, all the parts that would be exposed, to create a bigger contrast with her hair, and costume. Her eyes were with dark chocolate brown eyeliner that turned to gold toward the outside. Her eye shadow was apricot, with a dark green and copper to accent it, with black mascara. Her lips were done with a nude color, and they added a little color to her cheeks, and when Lily was done she looked in the mirror.

It took her a second to absorb it all, her hair was gorgeous and full, and her eyes popped more than normal. She was busy looking herself over, and was called to attention by a sharp word, and was rushed into her gown.

They pulled the corset as tight as it should be, and Lily swore she was going to pass out. Her already tiny waist literally disappeared under the whit fabric. She pulled on a slip, and they began to add the layers of her dress on, followed by the heels. Lily had about ten minutes until curtain call, and she began to pace, and was continually interrupted by touchups.

One her way out of the dressing room she stopped and looked in the full length mirror. She was surprised at how the costume came together. Taking a deep breath she walked out of the dressing room, and headed backstage to wait for her cue.

Remus was already sitting on a bench since he had a ways to go, and he patted the spot next to him for Lily to sit. “You look great,” he commented with a smile.

“Thanks, you too,” Lily said letting out a shaky breath. She could hear the crowd clap as the house lights went out, and the stage was set up. Lily looked around for her friends to see if she could catch a glimpse of them, but they were on the other side.

Sirius was already out on stage, as was James as one of the extra guys, as he would be in most scenes with extras. She was looking out on the stage watching and before she knew it, the beginning of scene three started. With a deep breath, and a thumbs up from Remus, Lily crossed the stage, as if it came natural

Lily said her lines, and acted like a normal teenage girl with her ‘mother’ rolling her eyes at her comments, and gesturing unhappily when she brought up the prospect of marriage. Before she knew it, she walked off with Phoebe, and was rushed back for another wardrobe change.

She began to fully panic now, she was going to have to see, dance, and kiss Sirius now. Lily walked slowly in her flowing white gown, and the angle wings that had been fastened to her back. They weren’t large, but it did make it weird to walk.

Lily entered the masquerade scene with Jason Ingel, her father in the play, to go ‘greet’ the guests that were coming to the party. She smiled lightly when Romeo entered the stage, and gave him a flirtatious smile, batted her eyes, and looked away. It was killing her to act like this with Sirius, but her acting didn’t waver.

When James walked on stage, his breath caught. Lily was absolutely gorgeous, and she really did look like an angel. He stumbled a bit as he walked over to Bridget to dance for this scene. He found himself constantly looking at Lily from the corner of his eye, adjusting the mask on his face as he did so.

“O, then, dear saint, let lips do what hands do; they pray, grant thou, lest faith turn to despair,” Sirius said as he held Lily’s hand, a mischievous smirk on his face.

Lily wanted nothing more than to yank her hand away, and hit Sirius, but she continued. “Saints do not move, though grant for prayers’ sake,” Lily replied as her face neared his dangerously, her flirty smile on her lips.

“Then move not, while my prayer’s effect I take,” Sirius said before looking around the stage as practiced. He then leaned in and put his hand behind her head, and pulled her close to kiss her. Lily could feel him taking it much further than needed and she pulled back. “Thus from my lips, by yours, my sin is purged.”

“Then have my lips the sin that they have took,” Lily said as she glared at Sirius, glare they were far enough away from the crowd so they wouldn’t see.

James could tell that Lily was already upset and uneasy, and he cursed Sirius under his breath before turning Bridget around lightly, and bit his lip to keep from yelling out as she stepped on his foot.

“Sorry! It’s the shoes!” She hissed under her breath.

“Sin from thy lips? O trespass sweetly urged! Give me my sin again,” Sirius said turning Lily around before kissing her again, his hidden hand dangerously close to her bum.

“You kiss by the book,” Lily said backing up quickly. She was glad their scene was over, and quickly walked over to Phoebe to calm herself down.

Everyone walked off stage and James caught Sirius smirking, and bragging with one of his friends, trying to show off slightly. James shook his head and walked off. They had a brief break and he could see Lily breaking down to Remus.

“I can’t do it! Bridget can change and go out there, I will pretend to get sick,” Lily said as Remus walked with her.

“Just finish this act, there isn’t enough time for her to change just yet,” Remus replied trying to relax her. She was shaking, and the tears were threatening to spill over.

“Alright,” she said as the wings were removed from her back and she was lead to the stairs that lead the makeshift balcony.

James had to act fast. He was unsure what came over him, but he wasn’t going to let Lily give up after all the hard work she had gone through. He was basically wearing the same outfit as Sirius was, except the shirt, which he could change very quickly. They were the same height, and it would be difficult for the audience to tell the change since they hadn’t gone very far into the play.

He ducked behind a curtain, and when Sirius moved to his spot before walking out on stage, James pulled out his wand, and stunned him and dragged him behind the curtain. He ripped Sirius’ shirt off, then his own, tossing it to the ground. He buttoned up the red silk, and grabbed the hat. Right before he went on stage, he cast a spell to make Sirius get sick.

James would have a lot to explain later, but it was too late. Taking a deep breath, he walked out on the stage, and heard a few people from the side gasp, they had seen the change, but the audience hadn’t yet, and neither had Lily.
