Albus fesses up… a bit.
Severus sipped at his Firewhisky and felt it warm and sooth him. He looked at Albus.
‘This had better be good, old man…’ His black eyes glittered a little.
‘I require patience of you Severus, if you please. I can answer any questions you may have at the end but let me finish the story first.’ Albus adjusted his position and his eyes glazed over a little. Severus watched him and nodded briefly.
Albus began to speak.
‘In the beginning, before humans and wizards walked the earth, there were Gods and other spiritual beings, angels if you like. They lived together in peace for eons until a powerful God named Ashar was born. Ashar’s mind was not pure and he craved dominion over the other Gods. They resisted and Ashar was exiled. He had followers, however, who went with him and so what we now term heaven and hell were created. Ashar raged war against those who cast him out and there has been an on-going battle between good and evil ever since. You, yourself, have been a player in this war, Severus. Voldermort, although he didn’t know it, was a servant of Ashar and his descendants. The war between good and evil has always been a delicate balance.’
Albus paused and sipped his drink before continuing.
‘Ashar’s ranks were swelled when he was joined by a powerful being named Rasari. Between them, they almost destroyed the Universe, until one fateful battle when the combined forces of the Holy Temple destroyed Ashar himself. Rasari was left weakened and was summoned before the Holy Goddess Iydella. They agreed a truce to last for all eternity and bonded this truce by pledging their own children to each other. Iydella pledged her daughter, Selene. Rasari pledged his son….’ Albus paused and looked at Severus.
‘Annalin…’ Severus breathed. The impact of Albus’s words had him stunned. He was pale and his hand was trembling a little. So Selene and Annalin did exist. It still didn’t explain why he and Hermione were dreaming about them. He gulped. This was bigger than he had imagined.
‘Go on…’ he whispered hoarsely.
‘As Selene and Annalin grew older, they fell in love. It was an all-consuming passion. They were both beautiful to look at but Selene lived in a fantasy world a lot of the time and dreamt about love all day…and all night. Annalin, while he loved Selene, was flighty and enjoyed the thrill of the chase. His affection for Selene was never in doubt, but his fidelity was. Selene became jealous and thought Annalin had found another. He hadn’t, but his anger at being so accused caused him to stay away from Selene. She died of a broken heart and when Annalin returned to find her gone, he was distraught and ended his own life.’
Albus had tears in his eyes and wiped them away with his hand.
Severus stared at him. In the dreams, they had been so in love. How could it have gone so badly wrong? He felt a gnawing pain in his stomach.
Albus coughed and continued.
‘Iydella and Rasari were beside themselves with grief. In her fury, Iydella threatened war in retaliation for Annalin abandoning Selene when she needed him the most. Rasari pleaded with her to reconsider and attempted a bargain with her. Iydella agreed to the bargain and it was agreed that the souls of Selene and Annalin would be born again on Earth in the hope they would find each other again. They also needed learn to trust, to think about more than just love and to commit to one person for life. Once together, the balance of good and evil would be equal and the rift between each side would be healed. The only rule to this bargain was that neither Iydella nor Rasari were allowed to intervene.
All of this happened over 50,000 years ago. The souls of Selene and Annalin have married other souls over the years, but in each relationship, they have found something wanting. In the whole of this time, their souls had never found each other. Until now.’
Albus stopped talking and drank down the remainder of his Firewhisky, glancing over the top of his glasses as he observed Severus’s face.
Severus stared at him in disbelief. ‘Tell me you’re not saying what I think you are, Albus…please…’
‘I cannot tell you a lie, Severus. The soul of Annalin, son of Rasari, had been reincarnated in this lifetime as a talented wizard named Severus Snape. And Selene, daughter of Iydella, has more recently been reborn as an equally talented and beautiful witch…’
‘Hermione….’ Severus closed his eyes in despair.
