Of Course I Wouldn't Want That!
Chapter Thirteen – Of course I wouldn’t want that!
The next few days passed rather quickly for Hermione. Ginny was still hell-bent on the fact that Hermione was wasting precious time that could have been used in propositioning their potion’s master; but seeing as Hermione was not keen on dying so young, nothing had happened. Unless you count the normal amount of student-teacher interaction necessary when you are the only one in a class with the guts to actually answer the extremely difficult questions that the teacher throws out at random unexpected intervals in the most intimidating way possible.
By the time that Saturday had rolled around, Hermione was having a very difficult time not telling anyone when and how she had managed to earn herself another detention with Snape or why, for that matter, she was not properly terrified of the idea.
“Honestly Hermione,” Harry hissed at her during dinner, “If I didn’t know any better I would think that you actually wanted detention with Snape.”
Hermione looked up from her book as Ginny somehow managed to hide her sudden hysterical case of the giggles by pretending to choke on a potato. “Of course not Harry,” she reassured, “I just don’t see the use in dwelling on it since I have no choice in the matter.” This seemed to mollify Harry but now that Hermione had been roused from her book-induced stupor, she could no longer ignore the highly suggestive looks that Ginny was giving her from across the table. Deciding that being a little early couldn’t hurt anything she collected her things and left for the dungeons.
Her friends were left staring after her for a moment before deciding that it was not to be helped. After all, only Hermione would want to be early for detention.

The hallways were still deserted since everyone else was at dinner and since she was in no hurry, Hermione walked leisurely toward the potion’s classroom.
As she did so, she speculated about her upcoming lessons. She hoped that Occlumency was not as hard for her as it had been for Harry a few years previously. Although she did think that it was harder for him due to the fact that he had actually wanted to continue with his dreams, and therefore there had been no motivation on his part to actually learn to block his mind. Hermione on the other hand had a great deal of motivation and should have no trouble adding this to her significantly long list of achievements to date.
As she turned the corner into the corridor that lead to Professor Snape’s classroom she thought that she saw a shadow move out of the corner of her eye. Her heart began pounding a tattoo in her chest and she quickened her steps to reach the door. Her paranoia was not helped when she turned to enter the classroom only to be stopped by the sight of Professor Snape leaning on the doorframe to the darkened classroom as though he had been waiting there for her to arrive.
Somehow she managed not to scream in shock and instead looked around her warily.
“Were you following me Professor?” She asked quietly.
“No… why would you think that?” He answered looking at her with undisguised confusion.
She looked around her once more before squaring her shoulders and shaking her head.
“No reason I was just… never mind.” She said dismissing it as a figment of her imagination.
Severus stared at her for a moment longer and then turned and led her into the classroom. Hermione followed him. As the door clicked shut behind her she realized that he had not turned off the lights and now they were standing in a pitch black room. Her heartbeat quickened again but for a completely different reason. Standing in the dark she suddenly realized that she was alone and helpless. She was, quite literally, at Severus’ mercy and the idea was a sobering one.

Severus waited a moment in the pitch blackness of the room listening to Hermione’s breathing speed up as she realized the situation which she had put herself into. He could almost envision the look of terrified confusion that would be playing across her face at this moment and he held back a chuckle at the thought before wordlessly casting lumos. The sudden burst of light caught her off guard and he saw the look of terror in her eyes before she rearranged her features again.
‘Good,’ he thought, ‘she is afraid of me. At least the girl hasn’t lost her mind completely.’

‘Great,’ Hermione inwardly cursed, ‘now he thinks that I am afraid of him. But I will be damned if I will admit that I am just scared of the dark.’
“Our first lesson,” Severus began, as with a flick of his wand the candles in the room blazed to life and the classroom returned to its usual dim glow, “Will be on how to hide your emotions physically without the symptoms that most people exhibit when concealing information.”
He gestured to the chair in front of his desk and she sat.
“If you are unable to control your physical appearance then you may as well just hand your enemies the information they desire.” Severus walked to a table in the corner on which stood a pensieve filled with memories. “Therefore, you will view a memory again and again until you are able to see it without showing any emotion.”
