A Friend in Need
"What the hell are you doing?!"
"Hermione! I can—"
"AGH! Sectumsempra!"
At the sounds of screaming, Severus Snape ran down the hallway to Professor Ronald Weasley's quarters just in time to see Hermione Granger cast the most accomplished Sectumsempra he'd ever seen. He stopped to think that he was quite impressed—considering he'd never cast his own spell half so well—before delicately snatching her wand from her hand.
"Miss Granger, what have you done?" he asked quietly.
She looked at his face blankly, then at the blood-soaked bed where two bodies now lay in seeping pieces, then back at him, her own face paling.
"What?"
Her voice was already soft and shaky.
Snape took a moment to assess the scene before him, thinking quickly. Satisfied by her stricken expression that she would do no more harm, he handed her wand back and ushered her toward the door.
"Go to my quarters, now, quickly. The password is 'essence of murtlap.' Sit on the couch and don't move. We'll talk when I return."
He closed the door behind her and waited until he heard footsteps to be sure that she was capable of following his instructions.
"Well, well, Weasley. It seems you've finally met your long-deserved sticky end. And for you, Miss Brown, I can't quite say that I expected any better."
He stepped toward the bed, wand outstretched, and began the tedious process of vanishing the remains of Hermione's outburst.
"I should really thank Miss Granger, as her discovery of your little affair has saved me a lot of time and trouble."
He smiled to himself as he held up Ron's white, wide-eyed head by its copper hair.
"It will be much easier to court her with you already out of the way, especially without waiting around on her grief and despair at losing such a prize."
He laughed as the head disappeared with a *pop*, and gleefully finished his work, planning how best to console Miss Granger during her time of need.
