Chapter 13
CHAPTER THIRTEEN
The great hall was filled to bursting with costumed students and staff. The music was loud, and the crowd slightly rowdy as they students let loose and enjoyed their fall social event.
Harry Potter and Ginny Weasley were dressed as the little mermaid and Prince Eric, while Ron and Lavender were dressed as sleeping beauty and her prince. Neither appeared to be enjoying the ball as they stood, looking rather bored off to the side.
“Where is Hermione?” Harry asked.
“Probably couldn’t find a date.” Lavender said in a rather catty tone as she pressed herself against Ron’s side.
“She would have, if a certain redheaded prick had kept his wand in his trousers.” Ginny said with a glare for her brother. Ron had the grace to blush. He knew he had wronged her, and lost the best thing that could have ever happened to him.
“I don’t think she’s in mourning.” Harry snickered at Ron’s expense. He hadn’t exactly forgiven Ron for his bad behavior, or for breaking Hermione’s heart.
“I said I was sorry. I didn’t mean for it to happen.” He mumbled.
“Aww, poor Ron, it’s not your fault. I’m sure your trousers just accidentally popped open, and you simply slipped and fell into that nasty little slag, right? You’re the victim here.” Ginny rolled her eyes and looked up at Harry. “I’m going to get a drink.”
“She’s got quite a mouth on her.” Ron said, glaring after his sister.
“Yeah, she sure does.” Harry smiled. Ron frowned and glanced around the room.
“Bloody hell.” He said low, his voice cracking slightly when he saw them.
Draco and Hermione stopped just outside the doors to the main hall. With one last look at each other, Draco pushed open the door and they stepped inside. Though the music was still playing, people stopped to stare as they walked in. Her hand was resting on his arm as he escorted her through the crowd.
“Look at that!”
“They came together….”
“A Slytherin and a Gryffindor?”
“Pureblood had gone slumming…”
“She looks beautiful…..”
“Wow, he looks kind of hot in that get up.”
They heard them, the good, the bad, the indifferent, and they could have cared less. Draco looked down at her and winked when they reached the dance floor. He leaned over her hand and kissed her fingers, much like he had seen his father do earlier, then pulled her into his arms and swept her onto the dance floor.
The room was lit softly by the candles floating above them, the enchanted ceiling showed a clear and starry night. The song, You and Me, was slow, the words filled with meaning for the couple dancing. Everyone’s eyes were on them, shocked, appalled and amused. But Draco only had eyes for the woman in his arms, and Hermione could not see anything beyond his silver gaze.
“Everyone is watching us.” He said.
“We knew that they would.”
“Do you regret it?”
“No, I’m not ashamed of us.”
“Neither am I.” He pulled her closer, her arms wrapping around his neck and he hugged her close. “I love you, Hermione.” He whispered softly.
“And I love you, my Dragon.” She lifted her lips and accepted his kiss. The soft, slow caress of lips upon lips as they moved together, the only two people who mattered.
“What the fuck?” Ron and Harry said at the same time.
“Oh my goodness, has she been holding out!” Ginny said, bouncing up and down excitedly as she watched Draco kiss Hermione on the dance floor.
“Why are you so bloody happy?” Ron snapped while Harry just continued to stare blankly at the couple dancing.
“Why? She was unhappy Ron, you broke her heart you idiot! Look at her, she adores him and can’t you see the way he’s looking at her?” Ginny said.
“He’s playing her, no way he cares about her.” Ron denied.
“I don’t know about that Ron….I’ve never seen Draco look at anyone, or anything like that. I think Ginny may be right, I think Draco is in love with her.” Harry said watching in amazement.
“I still don’t buy it.” Ron groused while he glared at the two of them.
“I think I’m about to be avada’d Hermione.” Draco said when he saw her friends staring at them.
“Don’t worry about them. Tonight is about us, remember.” She said, putting her hand on the side of his face and turning his attention back to her. “You only need to care about how I look at you, how I feel about you.”
“The way you look at me makes me want to leave. Knowing that you love me, that makes me want to cry.” He said softly as he brushed his lips over hers again.
“Do you really love me Dragon?” She asked, her voice breaking slightly with her vulnerability. Draco brushed a stay curl from her cheek and smiled.
“More than you can imagine.” He kissed her again, lips parted slightly so they could touch their tongues to the others, tasting softly. “I hope everyone else can see it too, I want the entire world to know that I love you.” He kissed her lips, her cheek, her chin.
“I don’t know that anyone could doubt it now.” She said, giggling slightly when tickled her ear with a kiss.
“They can all fall into the black lake for all I care. At the moment, I am the happiest I have ever been.”
“As am I Dragon, as am I.” Draco took her hand and led her from the floor as the music changed to something faster. He found his way to a table in the back and sat, pulling her into his lap.
“So how long has this been going on?” Ron sneered. Harry shoved him slightly, a frown on his face.
“Not that it’s any of your business, but Draco and I have been together for awhile now.” Hermione answered.
“But his dad would sooner kill you than look at you.” Harry said.
“Actually, Lucius has been nothing but nice to me, Cissy too.” Hermione told them. “They have changed, and they have accepted me for who, and what I am.”
“How do you know this isn’t a ruse Hermione?” Harry looked at Draco. “Are you playing her?”
“I don’t have to justify myself to you, Potter. But the answer is no, I’m not playing her. I love her, very much.” He was so sincere, the energy that poured out of him as he confessed his love was almost overwhelming.
“You tried to kill her Malfoy!” Ron was shouting again, even as Harry tried to shove him back.
“And I have said I’m sorry. I will live with my actions for the rest of my days, and do not think I don’t suffer from the memories. But I have not broken her heart, and I will not. I know what I have in her, and I know with everything in me that I will not fuck this up for any reason.” Draco said as his arms wrapped tighter around her.
Harry stood there for a moment and just stared at them, the way Draco had his arms protectively around Hermione, the way she relaxed into him, accepting his protection.
“Hermione?” Harry called her name softly, and she could easily read the question in his eyes.
“I love him.” She said. Ron exploded then, yelling and reaching for his wand. Harry snatched it from him, and laughed when Ginny slapped Ron upside his head.
“Oh sod off Ron! You blew it, and now you have no right!” Ginny yelled, hands on her hips.
“But him? Why him?” Ron whined as Lavender dragged him away, a scowl on her face.
“If you are happy Mione, then I am happy for you.” Harry said, leaning down to kiss her cheek. He offered his hand to Draco, who after a moment, took it and shook. “If you break her heart, I’ll end you.”
“Fair enough.” Draco said, smiling. Harry slid his arm around Ginny and led her away.
“Well, that was fun.” She said.
“Bound to happen. Come on love, let’s dance a bit more, see what else we can stir up.” Draco said, laughing as he pulled her onto the dance floor and into his arms.

"You And Me"
What day is it? And in what month?
This clock never seemed so alive
I can't keep up and I can't back down
I've been losing so much time
'Cause it's you and me and all of the people with nothing to do
Nothing to lose
And it's you and me and all other people
And I don't know why, I can't keep my eyes off of you
One of the things that I want to say just aren't coming out right
I'm tripping on words
You've got my head spinning
I don't know where to go from here
'Cause it's you and me and all of the people with nothing to do
Nothing to prove
And it's you and me and all other people
And I don't know why, I can't keep my eyes off of you
There's something about you now
I can't quite figure out
Everything she does is beautiful
Everything she does is right
'Cause it's you and me and all of the people with nothing to do
Nothing to lose
And it's you and me and all other people
And I don't know why, I can't keep my eyes off of you
