Playground Follies

Thic chapter deals briefly with Lucius, and then switches gears a bit. This should give you an idea of what little James Potter is capable of. Not too many new reviews....and that makes Lucius sad.....

Lucius wasn’t really into shopping too much, but he figured he could use a neat trim to his hair, so he went to his most trusted barber. The only man in England he trusted with his hair.

As soon as he entered the shop the old acquaintance was on him in a friendly hurry. “Lucius! What a pleasure to have ju here in my shop again!” he said, his Spanish accent slurring a few of his words. Lucius nodded at the man.

“It’s a pleasure to be back, Manzuelo. I’d just like a trim around the edges. You know, the usual.” Lucius replied. Manzuelo nodded.

“Of course, my good amigo. Only de best for ju.” He said. He ushered Lucius into a chair, and started with him immediately, much to the chagrin of the customer he’d been previously working on. Lucius gave a smug look to the other wizard, who immediately left the shop, slamming the few coins he owed on the counter as he left.

“Ah, just like de good old days, eh, amigo?” Manzuelo commented, and Lucius nodded with a short chuckle.

-------------------------------------------

Draca’s day at school went smoothly. She was very pleased that all of her ‘classes’ were with James, and they sat together whenever they got the chance. The children who had found out about Draca’s ‘gift’ stayed away from her as much as possible, and warned their friends to do the same. But Draca and James didn’t mind, because they were friends, and they had each other to take comfort in if one of the comments stung particularly bad.

But overall Draca had felt her day had gone very well. Until recess.

James and Draca sat cross-legged on the grass at recess, watching the other children play. The two were laughing and talking with each other. Draca was amazed that some of the age groups got to play together. Six-, seven- and eight-year-olds got to play together whereas nine-and ten-year-olds got the playground to themselves. Unfortunately that meant that Abraxas was somewhere on the playground. And Draca didn’t have to wait long for her brother to surface. He approached her, with three of his cronies behind him. He grinned at draca.

“Aw….lookit. Widdle Dwaca and James are sitting together!” he cooed, and then burst out laughing. His cronies laughed behind him.

Draca saw an immediate change come over James’ face. He looked very serious. But Abraxas only laughed.

“He’s mad! The little half-breed is angry with me, boys!” he chortled, and then kicked dirt onto Draca and James. Draca stood up with a cry, brushing her clothes off. James stood slowly and silently, his bright amber eyes darkening by the moment. “Are you mad? Come off it, Half-breed.” Abraxas teased, and then shoved the young wizard to the ground.

James lifted his legs in the air and propelled himself back to his feet from the force of his kick. Draca’s eyes widened, and she stepped back. Abraxas looked at her. “Oi! Trent! Hold her…I’ll give her the pleasure of watching her new little boyfriend get ripped to pieces.” He said. One of his friends grabbed Draca. James looked at the boy, and a growl began deep in his throat. Trent held Draca steadily in front of him like a shield. Abraxas shoved James again, but the boy recovered his ground before he toppled. His gaze shifted to Abraxas, and he bared his fangs, his growl becoming louder. It was a terribly fierce sound, like a dog whose territory was in danger.

“Come on then, Potter. I’ll take you on.” He said, and swung as if he were going to punch James. James side-stepped easily, and Abraxas stumbled forward, his force misplaced. James lifted both his hands, and clasped them together, and used the combined force of his arms to club Abraxas on the back. The older boy smacked the ground with a terrible thud.

Meanwhile, all the other children had noticed a fight going on, and were quickly forming a circle, chanting the famous fight song.

Abraxas, embarrassed he had been bested, quickly grabbed a handful of dirt and flung it in James’ face. The younger boy yelped, and put his hands to his face. A few of the children in the crowd booed. Abraxas was a known bully. Abraxas seized his chance, and punched James in the stomach, knocking the breath out of him. But James wasn’t done yet. Even with his eyes out of commission, he had a long black tail, fangs, and very sensitive ears that worked just fine. Abraxas tried to come in for another attack, but James dodged him again, and as he stumbled past him James’ tail came crashing down on his back, knocking him to the ground. This time James took the initiative, and stomped down on Abraxas’ back, pinning him. Trent let go of Draca and the three cronies fled, just as a teacher managed to break the circle of children.

“Potter! Malfoys! Follow me! Your parents will be notified of this appalling behavior.” She cried, dragging James off of Abraxas’ back. Draca looked at the woman.

“Me too? I didn’t-“ but the teacher cut her off abruptly.

“I don’t tolerate excuses. You have dirt on you too, so I can only assume you were part of this brutish skirmish.” She said, pulling Abraxas to his feet. “Come now.” She said, shooing the three children in front of her.

Draca had a terrible sinking feeling in the pit of her stomach. Contact their parents…Draca just hoped her grandfather wasn’t still in a bad mood and would listen. Tears began to stream silently down her face.

“Way to go James!” came a cry from deep in the crowd. There was a cheer from the children for James, who had bested one of the worst of the school ground bullies. James, who had cleared the dirt from his eyes grinned wildly. But his grin faded as he saw Draca’s face.

“What’s wrong, friend?” he asked. She shook her head.

“Nothing….I’m just…going to get in a lot of trouble.” She said, and sighed shakily.

James patted her shoulder. “It’ll be okay. I’ll take up for you.” He said.

“I wish it were that easy.” She said, completely unmollified.

She began to tremble softly as they made the trek back into the school to contact their parents.
