Chapter XIII: Pulling a Weasley
Chapter XIII: Pulling a Weasley
09/24/1996
Five minutes before 2 a.m. Draco got to the Charms classroom and Potter was nowhere to be seen. Harry… Harry was nowhere to be seen. He didn’t really expect him to be early, but he was far too anxious to tolerate any delaying. Suddenly, Harry’s head floated in front of him.
‘AH! Good God, Potter!’, Draco screamed.
‘Sorry’, he laughed and took off his invisibility cloak.
‘So, that’s your secret to why you never get caught…’, Draco said as he watched the silvery fabric disappear inside Harry’s bag pack.
‘Mostly. I suppose you won’t tell, right?’
‘I don’t know… I already have too many secrets to keep’, Draco joked. ‘Where’s your broom?’
‘Right… here…’, Harry said taking a miniature broom from his pocket. He outstretched his hand for Draco to see, beaming proudly.
‘Tell me this is a weird joke of yours that I don’t get.’
‘No, you dim… I shrank it because it wouldn’t fit under the cloak’, he explained. ‘That I call lack of imagination… Engorgio!’
Draco looked horrified at the growing Firebolt.
‘You did that to your broom?! How can you even think about shrinking your broom?! What if you damage it?’
‘I won’t’, Harry said not enough confidently for Draco’s peace of mind. ‘So, how will we do this?’
‘Well, I never really flew my way from home to school, so we should…’
‘…follow the train track’, Harry finished his sentence. ‘I wonder why that sounds so familiar… So, we go to Hogsmeade first, and once where at the Platform 9 ¾ we go straight to your house, right? You do know how to get to your house from the station.’
‘Of course I do’, Draco said bitterly. ‘Can you resist long journeys?’
‘I did it once, so there shouldn’t be too different tonight.’
‘OK, is there anything you haven’t done already?’
‘I don’t know, but what ever we do tonight will only enlarge the list’, Harry beamed. ‘Let’s go then.’
‘Wait, we haven’t planned anything yet.’
‘We don’t need a plan. Plans never work anyway’, he said matter-of-factly.
‘Explain something to me, will you? How the fuck are you still alive?!’, Draco laughed.
‘Here’s the thing: we can either go and trust our good luck or plan now and rescue your sister tomorrow. I go for the first one.’
‘After you, then’, Draco gestured with a bow.
Using the Marauder’s Map, leaving Hogwarts undetected was a piece of cake. The frosty air of the night filled their lungs as they flew over the lake, which looked like a black mirror shinning only for them. The sky was too cloudy for Draco’s taste but it didn’t look like it would rain any time soon, so at least the weather was in their favour. He looked at Harry and laughed on the inside at the way his messy hair was blown by the wind. It obviously still looked hideous, but he had to admit it fitted perfectly with his ‘I-never-plan-my-suicides’ personality.
Hogsmeade was really close. He could already see the dock and the city not too far away. He sped up and Harry did the same behind him. If anyone had looked up that very instant, they would have easily confused them with a pair of shooting stars. Once they were over the train station, they followed the tracks trying not to freeze. But they were both too exited to worry about how cold they were… they were on a mission now, and Draco would not allow himself to let it fail.
‘When we get to the Manor’, Draco said breaking the silence, ‘you will have to wait for us outside. There are too many wards and if any intruder dares to step in… well, let’s just say you’d rather die at the hands of the Dark Lord.’
‘I’ll wait outside then…’
Two long hours later they reached the small muggle town were the Manor was hidden. Draco’s stomach felt like it had been loaded with mercury. This was it. There was no way back, and after that night both his and Hera’s lives would change radically. He tried to convince himself, as they flew the last few minutes of their first journey, that after they left the Manor, everything would be better. All he would give up wouldn’t compare to what was to come. Freedom.
Draco gestured for Harry to slow down and they landed neatly in front of what muggles saw as an old abandoned factory, but to any wizard, it was a magnificent, luxurious and intimidating manor.
‘So, this is where you live?’, Harry asked in awe. ‘Humble…’
‘Very’, Draco laughed. ‘Try to stay in the shadows, just in case…’
The blonde opened the large mahogany door and lit his wand, praying his Father weren’t sleeping in the empty room in the ground floor. He made his way through the dinning room and after going across a long hallway, he reached the entry to the dungeons. He walked towards the door to Hera’s room and when he opened it, he was almost knocked over by her.
‘Draky, I missed you so much!’, Hera talked with her head buried in his stomach.
‘I missed you too, love. Did you know I was coming?’, he asked lifting her in his arms.
‘Yes. I asked Tilly to bring me a suitcase this morning and I packed everything’, she answered proudly. ‘I also asked her to keep my order as a secret, so I don’t think anyone will notice I’m gone for a few days, to say the least.’
‘Brilliant’, Draco kissed her on the cheek and after grabbing the suitcase, he carried her out of the dungeons. ‘Are you sure nothing will go wrong, right? There’s no charm in the front door…’
‘Nothing’, she said reassuringly. ‘But if I were you, I’d take an umbrella on your way out.’
Draco left the Manor holding Hera, the suitcase and the umbrella. Harry appeared from the shadows with a broad smile on his face.
‘So, you must be Hera Malfoy’, he said outstretching his right hand.
‘And you must be the famous Harry Potter’, she said shacking it with air of superiority.
‘She definitely is your sister’, he laughed.
‘You still had doubts?’, Draco asked putting her on the ground.
Harry kneeled in front of her and asked, ‘How old are you?’
‘Eight. I’ll be nine next month.’
‘Well, you talk too well to be only nine.’
‘I know. Draky says I have his brains’, she laughed.
‘Draky must be really proud to have such an intelligent and cute sister.’
‘Cute?’, Draco said offended. ‘Hera is not just cute! She’s an angel, that’s what she is’, he said tickling her and kissing her all over. ‘So, do you like being outside?’
Hera nodded happily.
‘I’m glad. Now, we’ll have to get as far as we can, alright? Harry, see if you can handle the luggage. It’ll be difficult enough for me to fly with Hera.’
‘Sure, no problem.’
Harry put the umbrella inside the suitcase, charmed it to fly behind him and got on his broom. Draco held Hera tightly against his chest and the three of them took off into the dark, cloudy night.
