Regrets

Severus apparated on a piece of familiar moorland. Familiar in the sense that he had been there before, but not familiar enough that he knew the location to be able to apparate without the burning mark to guide him. He wasn’t even sure which continent he was in. It was dark but the lights of Voldemort’s encampment shone clearly in the gloom. He felt cold, shivery and somewhat breathless but he knew better than to keep his Lord waiting. He pulled his cloak tightly around him and moved as quickly as he could in the direction of the lights.

As he walked he concentrated on clearing his mind for his meeting with the Dark Lord. It was not a full gathering. He d red recognise that piece of filth Pettigrew. He tamped down on the recurring urge to slaughter the snivelling wretch. He had made up his mind a long time ago that if he was not to have the distinction of putting an end to the Dark Lord he might end the life of the man who betrayed Lily. He had seen his chance with Sirius but that had all proved to be a long standing error.

He could see the proud bearing of Lucius Malfoy, clearly recognisable, even under the mask. A woman was also evident. Probably Bellatrix unless the Dark Lord had decided to favour one of the new intake. Not many women had the stomach to rise through the ranks and academic prowess was not the fashion with pureblood women.

He drew closer and closer until he finally stood in the presence of his master. He knelt gracefully and kissed the hem of Voldemort’s robe. He stayed crouched down until he was given permission to rise.

“My faithful servant visits me,” said Voldemort in his cold tones. “Tell me Severus, Lucius was most anxious to hear of your progress with your little mudblood slut.”

Severus carefully kept control of his mind as he answered,

“I have lit a spark with her. We are due to have an assignation tonight after dinner.”

He allowed an image of Hermione, allowing him to cup her breast through her uniform, to float across his mind. He felt the Dark Lord take the image from him.

“And what do you intend to do with her tonight?”

“The alleged purpose is to brew potions for our beloved medi-witch but I intend to kindle her interest a little more.”

Lucius chimed in,

“Surely you could have gone further than this… given the amount of time you’ve had?”

“If I were merely attempting to jump the girl thenouldould have done it. However I understood that my Lord wished me to control her to the extent that she would betray Potter. To do that I have to give her more than she expects and less than she wants… and that will take a little more time.”

“He talks sense Lucius. You worry like an old woman. This is a waste of time… Crucio.”

Lucius hit the floor writhing and Severus winced in sympathy. The attack was not sustained for longer than ten seconds and afterwards Lucius lay gasping for breath.

“Get out of my sight both of you. Severus I expect more progress from you by the weekend. Do not disappoint me! Lucius, I am beginning to wonder if my faith in your family was not misplaced. What are you waiting for? Get out!”

The two men scrambled away back to the Apparition point.

When they had go out of the line of fire Severus lent Lucius his shoulder to lean on. To tell the truth he was in almost as much in need of support as his friend. Now he was no longer braced against the Dark Lord his strength was failing rapidly.

“I was hoping you’d be able to tell him something to calm him down,” said Lucius ruefully. “You’re the only one to get away without a hex all day.”

“He is eager for progress,” said Severus diplomatically. “How are you, my friend?”

“Awful. Narcissa won’t speak. You know she can’t give me another child. Not that I think I could easily replace Draco… but I have no heir. I’m not sure if our Lord remembers what he’s done to me half the time.”

“Lucius, please don’t take this as a criticism, but I thought you were resolved to keep Draco clear of active service until he left Hogwarts.”

“I was but the Dark Lord grew impatient to hasten the conflict and Draco would have lost face if I had left him at school until the war was won. I gambled and I lost.”

“A man should never gamble more than he is prepared to lo sai said Severus gently.

“I’m a Malfoy. If I don’t win then I change the game.”

“I don’t follow,” said Severus, struggling against his fatigue.

“Avaddavrdavra,” said Malfoy quietly and effectively.
