An Unlikely Pair

**DISCLAIMER** All characters etc. belong to J.K. Rowling and I am making no money from this. Don’t sue because I’m sure that I don’t have anything that you’d want anyway. The basic plot for the story was a challenge presented by ArienAstera.

Chapter Twelve – An Unlikely Pair

The mood at Number 12 Grimmauld place that evening was one of quiet sadness. Everyone knew what today was, yet nobody would speak of it. Dinner was served and the only sounds at the usually lively t wer were the noises of forks and knives scraping against the plates.

Ginny Weasley looked around the table in exasperation at the sad faces and finally spoke up, “You all know Hermione just as well as I do, and you know perfectly well that she wouldn’t want us all to be sitting around here like someone just died.” She raised her glass, “Hermione, wherever you are, Happy Birthday!”

Harry glanced around before raising his glass as well, “Happy Birthday, to Hermione!”

Ron followed suit, “Cheers! Happy Birthday ‘Mione!” And after a moment, everyone had their glasses raised, saluting Hermione.

The following morning, Ginny woke with a start at the incessant tapping on her bedroom window. She immediately recognized the large eagle owl and let it in, wasting no time untying the parchment that was tethered to its leg.

G-
I saw her last night. She looked alright. Snape was there too. Have much more to tell you, but not like this. Can you get away to meet me? Send a response immediately.
I miss you.
-D

Ginny quickly grabbed a quill and parchment and responded:

D-
Meet me tomorrow afternoon, two o’clock, at our usual spot.
Miss you too.
-G

She sent the owl on its way and headed for the bathtub. Now all she had to do was come up with an excuse to get away tomorrow – alone.

*POP*

Still not completely accustomed to apparating, Ginny swayed slightly before a hand reached out to steady her. She turned around and found herself face to face with Draco Malfoy.

He hugged her tightly and kissed her softly on the lips, “I’ve missed you so much.” He whispered.

“Me too.”

He took her by the hand and led her to the couch in the small flat that had become their hideaway. It wasn’t much, but Draco had managed to acquire it under a false name and the owner of the building was an older man who respected their privacy as long as the rent was paid on time. And it didn’t hurt that Draco sometimes slipped him a few extra galleons. Ginny and Draco had been together for almost two years now.

Shortly after Hermione’s disappearance, Draco had stumbled upon a crying Ginny up in the Astronomy Tower and much to her surprise he hadn’t sneered at her, or taunted her. Instead, he had comforted her and tried to make her laugh by doing a half-passable impression of Professor Snape. They had sat up there for hours, talking and realizing that they rather enjoyed one another’s company. They both knew that any sort of relationship would never be accepted, but they both found themselves returning to the Astronomy Tower, seeking the other. For months they met secretly, slowly falling in love, and at the beginning of the summer, Draco had decided to look into a place for them. Since then, the two had been meeting as regularly as possible. They had no idea what the future held for their relationship as Lucius Malfoy would never permit a Weasley to take the family name, but they often joked that should they ever marry, the ceremony would take place up in the Astronomy Tower at Hogwarts.

Ginny kicked off her shoes and curled up next to Draco, “Tell me everything.”

Draco proceeded to tell Hermione all about the previous night’s events and when he finished, Ginny looked at him with a solemn expression before speaking.

“Draco…you know that we have to go to Dumbledore and the rest of the Order with this information. Voldemort may have spared Professor Snape’s life for now, but you know as well as I do how volatile he is. He could change his mind at any moment.”

Draco looked into Ginny’s eyes and knew that she was right. He squeezed her hand, “When would you like to go see him?”

Dumbledore looked at the young couple in amusement as he had known for quite some time now about their relationship. He had listened carefully as Draco told him about Hermione’s birthday celebration and immediately called the temporary potions professor up to his office.

Draco looked nervously at Professor Dumbledore.

“Draco, you must understand that because of who your father is and his position with Lord Voldemort, I must ensure that what you aellielling me is the truth and that your intentions are pure. Would you agree to allow me to question you after taking a dose of Veritaserum?”

Draco’s initial reaction was pure Malfoy - how dare Dumbledore ask him to do such a thing? Then he turned and saw the hopeful look in Ginny’s eyes.

He nodded graciously, “Of course Professor. I’ll do whatever you need me to do.”

A/N – Didn’t see this one coming, did you? *very Lucius-like smirk*

Another A/N - ArienAstera- Thank you for pointing out to me that Ginny is not a mudblood (Duh, have you seen my brain? It seems to be missing.) I guess this is what happens when you try to do these things without a beta. I have edited the chapter accordingly, thanks for keeping me on my toes!

ancientgirl - longer chapters are coming, I promise!
