Daisy groaned softly, and opened her eyes. Her head was throbbing and her left arm ached. She felt as if she had been stomped on by a huge horse. The last thing she remembered was tripping at the top of the hill. She had been chased by centaurs. The centaurs!

She sat upright, disturbing a cloth that had been put on her forehead. She looked around, panicked, to see if she could recognize her surroundings. She didn’t. She was in what appeared to be a sort of lean-to, with large leafy branches intricately weaved to create a large v-shape that made up the entire structure. She jumped when she heard a twig snap outside a hide door covering, and drew her legs up against her chest when a large female centaur pulled back the hide covering, and stepped into the lean-to.

“Ah! You are awake.” The centaur said, and held out a bowl of what appeared to be thick stew. “Eat.” She said.
Daisy took the bowl in her hands, and stared at the steaming substance.

“Where am I?” she asked, and looked up at the centaur woman.

“You are in our camp, child of man. You stumbled into our midst a few hours ago and Arbino, our leader, had us house you to make sure you hadn’t hurt yourself during your fall.”

“Oh. Okay.” Daisy said softly. The covering on the door was thrown back, and another centaur entered, this time a male. His equine half was white as snow, and his long hair matched it. Daisy cowered in fear against the branch wall of the lean-to. She didn’t want to die in the middle of the forest like this…

“The human has sense enough to tremble…” he said, his gruff voice grating on Daisy’s ears. “But you have nothing to fear from me or my herd, human child. You did not mean to come to our camp, and I will not execute you for a crime you had no intention to commit.” He said. Daisy relaxed immediately. “I will not hold you here, but I wish to extend an invitation to you to stay here during your sojourn into the forest. Perhaps we could learn from each other…” he said. Daisy grinned up at the white centaur.

“I would love to!”

Lucius sighed as he pulled his horse to a stop near the river. They hadn’t seen hide nor hair of Daisy all day, and the sun was already starting to set. It was ridiculous. The little wench had left no trace of herself to follow, and he and Hermione were growing weary.

He dismounted in a fluid movement, and tied the horse to a tree to graze. He then unstuck Hermione from Blackfire, and helped her down from the large beast. She clung to him desperately for several moments, her legs like jelly, before she finally let go.

“Sorry…” she said, rubbing her backside. Her legs ached. She sat down against a tree as he fetched the bag with their camping supplies. It was then she got a good look at what he was wearing. He looked like something right out of an old explorer movie. He was wearing snug, tan-colored pants with knee-high brown boots. He was also wearing a white collared shirt, the sleeves rolled up to his elbows, and the shirt tucked neatly into his pants, held up with a thick brown leather belt.

His hair was pulled back with a leather tie and it made him look….yummy….wait!! She did not just think that! It was the change in temperature making her go temporarily insane. Yeah…that’s right…insane.

She almost didn’t notice when he had finished setting up the tent. It was a rather nice size, and had a thick padded bottom. But wait….

“Where am I going to sleep?” she asked. He looked up from pushing the anchors into the ground, a few strands of hair clinging to the light sheen of sweat on his face.

“Inside the tent or outside the tent. I don’t care which.” He said, and stood up slowly. Hermione crossed her arms.

“Jerk.” She said.

“Why don’t you make yourself useful and gather some firewood?” he said. She growled.

“There’s a magic word that you’ve forgotten…” she said warningly. He regarded her strangely for a moment.

“Now?” he asked. She let out an angry grunt, and stomped off to gather wood for a fire. She missed his smirk.

“So easy to persuade..."

Daisy looked around at the curious faces, and felt a bit self-conscious. She gave a squeal when an unknown pair of curious fingers found her bottom.

“Apparently that squishy part is a weakness…”

“Please….no touching below the waist…” she said, rubbing her butt through her hide pants. The large white centaur broke through the crowd, holding a longbow in his hands.

“Human…you carry a bow, not a firestick. Where is your stick of fire and air?” he asked. Daisy had to think for a moment to understand what he was asking.

“My wand? I have it right here!” she said, and drew the slender wooden instrument from the hide bag she kept at her side. There was a bay of terror, and two of the male centaurs reared on their hindlegs. Daisy’s surprised squeal was cut off when Arbino’s strong hand wrapped around her throat, and lifted her off of the ground. Her hands came up to grip Arbino’s wrist, her wand still clutched desperately in her hand. When the wood touched Arbino’s arm, he flung her away, and she skidded along the forest floor before coming to a stop. Arbino drew a dagger from a waist sheath, and stepped towards her.

“I meant no harm!” she said, shoving the wand back in the bag as quickly as she could, and began backpedaling to escape the approaching centaur. “Please!” she begged, tears coming to her eyes. The female centaur that had fed her, the Alpha female named Garita, stepped forward.

“She meant no harm, Arbino. She is a child, unaware of the threat of her people. I beg you not to harm her.” She said softly. Arbino sheathed the dagger again, and turned to Garita.

“If she draws her wand again, not only will I kill her, I will kill you as well for putting our people in danger.” He said, and turned his back to the relieved centaur female.

“Of course, Arbino. As you say.” She said, and trotted quickly to the trembling Daisy, reaching out a hand for her. Daisy took her hand, and Garita drew her to her feet. Garita gently patted Daisy’s head, a comforting gesture Daisy had seen her do to a few of the younger centaurs that looked up to Garita.

“I don’t understand, Garita. He asked about my wand, and I showed him. I didn’t mean…” Daisy began to cry. Garita had never seen a human cry before….and Daisy was so small and frail compared to herself….she looked pitiful with her small frame shaking.

“Come child….let us walk together. I will tell you a story…”

Hermione awoke during the night, shivering violently. She rolled over, dismayed to find that her blanket was gone. Somehow it had ended up draped over Lucius ‘the worst blanket hog this side of the Equator’ Malfoy. She hadn’t taken off her clothes, but she was still freezing. Lucius had stripped down to an old-fashioned looking undershirt, and had slept with his back to Hermione.

He now possessed both blankets, and Hermione’s tiny body mass wasn’t enough to keep her warm. It was damned cold in this forest, and casting a heating spell on such a small area wasn’t safe. She tried to pull her blanket back, but it was locked firmly in his grasp. He grunted in his sleep, and pulled away from her.

Hermione groaned softly, and tried to burrow herself against his back for warmth. It wasn’t working….her back and feet were still so cold….but she fell asleep again anyway.

It was going to be a looong trip…

~~

Lucius awoke, something very wiggly pressed into his back. He rolled over slowly, and came nearly face-to-face with Hermione’s sleeping face. It was her! She was pressed up against his back, trembling like she was….oops….

It would appear that he had stolen her blanket, and she was cold. But he was warm this way….he didn’t want to give up the extra warmth. He carefully draped both of the blankets over her, keeping far enough back that they didn’t touch.

He didn’t think she’d take too kindly to waking up in this position to begin with. If they were actually touching he might lose important bits….

Oh Lucius you silly man! SHe's going to kick your ass when she wakes up you selfish berk! But it is funny to hear your midnight rational thinking. 'I don't want to give up both blankets, so we'll share!' Genius....pure genius.

Anyway, you guys have read, now rate/review....or both! Get to it!
