The front row of the large theatre was full of familiar faces as Rhea Catherine Lupin was sworn in as Minister of Magic by the retiring Minister Kingsley Shacklebolt. Not only was she the first woman Minister but she was the first Werewolf to ever hold office. As she turned to face the crowd her eyes immediately went to her family. Her father, his eyes sparkling with pride as he clutched her mother’s hand tightly. Her mother with tears streaming down her face as she smiled up at her. Her brother, Remus Jr. was grinning with pride. She could do anything with them behind her.
“I would like to thank you all for coming. It is an honor to stand before you now as your new Minister of Magic. I can not begin my term, my new life, without acknowledging where I came from. I grew up just outside of London, my father was a professor at Hogwarts and my mother stayed home with my brother and I and wrote her books. We weren’t a wealthy family but we had what we needed and somehow my parents always made sure we had what we wanted. My parents….what can be said about them that would do justice to what they gave me? “ She caught her father’s eyes and held them as she spoke. “I grew up in a home filled with love. My parents to this day are more in love than any couple I have ever known. That love spilled over onto Remy and I and we never doubted that we were loved. My parents never let me believe that I was any less a person simply because I am a werewolf. They taught me that who we are is not measured by what we are, but by our thoughts, our feelings, our ability to love and empathize with others. I can remember my first transformation vividly. I knew it was coming and my parents made certain to prepare me ahead of time. My Uncle Severus brewed my potions carefully, adjusting them for my age and size and instead of it being something to dread, something bad that was happening to me, they celebrated it as a right of passage. Friends and family came for dinner, they brought me gifts and they all walked me to the room my parents had prepared for me, right next to my father’s. When the moon rose I was frightened, but there was a small grate between the rooms and I heard my father’s voice telling me “don’t fight it, sweet girl, it is who you are, let it happen, Daddy is here for you.” It was the same thing he said to me before I walked onto this stage tonight. It was terrifying, but each time it got a little easier because I knew he was close and I knew that when the sun came up my mother would be there waiting for me. They are the reason I am who I am today. Mum, Daddy, Remy…I love you.” She said, blowing kisses in their direction as the crowd cheered.
Her parents blew kisses right back while her brother smiled and shook his head. She scanned the row of Potters, Weasleys and her beloved Uncle Severus and knew that she was blessed.
“So, how about we start my term off right with a celebration instead of a lot of talk?” She pointed her wand to the sky and without uttering a word fireworks and confetti burst from the ceiling as the curtains opened behind her and a wizard rock band began to play. She smiled brightly and hopped off the stage straight into her father’s arms. The wizarding world had never seen a witch quite like Rhea Lupin and never again would there be a Minister of Magic that made such a strong imprint on their society. And never had a set of parents been more proud.
Lyrics from the song Daughter by Loudon Wainwright III
I know this was kind of short, probably could have been longer, but the muse just didn’t direct me deeper into it. Not my best work….I know that, but still…here it is. Hope you enjoyed it at least a little =) Remus is so hard to write…he’s so emo it takes a lot out of you to write him.
