Chapter 12
Chapter 12
It was warm. So warm. There was a voice. A young masculine voice. Soft and concerned. His eyes opened slowly and a wave of dizziness swept over him. He tried to sit up, but his muscles would not obey. The lights above were blinding. They hurt his eyes. Even the softest of candle flames hurt badly. Somewhere upon his chest, he felt a hand. It was rather strange to know that something that felt so small kept him so firmly in place. He supposed it was due to having his soul removed for a time.
He only barely recognized the other’s voice. He was sill trying to reorient himself to his surroundings. He could only barely turn his head to look about. It still took him a moment to realize he was in his own room. It took him even longer to completely recognize the face of the young man tending to him. It was Nessmont….He’d never seen the boy in ceremonial robes, but for some reason the boy was rolling up a few strange looking scrolls and breathing a small sigh of relief. He didn’t know why, but he was sure something must have happened. He wanted to ask but his voice failed him.
“So, back in the land of the living, huh, Eisen. I almost thought the Book of the Dead would be no help. But it seems to have worked…”
Hanz scowled. He had no idea what the other was talking about. Also, ness had used that nickname. But the boy was continuing. “The whole school is buzzing. Suddenly, there were all these lights all over the castle. Then tons of students were pouring out of the infirmary like they’ve never been sick. The teachers were beside themselves when they found you and Burkov past the gate. They kept whispering to themselves as if they couldn’t believe what they were seeing.”
Nessmont laughed a little nervously. “The potions professor made me help gather up that disgusting slime that was all over the ground. I had to fight her really hard to convince her that you weren’t dead and that I could bring you back. But I said I had to help you here, so that she wouldn’t have you dragged up to the third floor. You really challenged my levitation skills, you huge bastard!”
Henrick knew the boy really didn’t mean the insult. After so long of taking care of Ness, he was sure the boy had been more than eager to try that strange Egyptian magic on him while he was still relatively soulless and unable to do much to fight it off due to lack of consciousness. “The Minister came to question Burkov and everyone else. They wanted to take you too, but they thought you were dead, so they left you be. Funny thing is, after he was questioned and came back out, he claims to remember nothing. Nobody does… They had a school gathering…The acting headmistress said it had been a wide spread plague and that the head nurse found a cure.” he could hear the question in the younger boy’s voice. The boy wanted to know the truth of that had actually happened.
He debated telling the boy or not. It would seem both the school and the local Ministry wanted to sweep this all out of sight. He could even bet money that the summon memory loss of the event was Ministry doing. He supposed he was lucky to have escaped them. But now that he was alive again, he knew he’d have to be careful and pretend that he too had had his memory tempered with. But he still needed to share it, just in case he couldn’t avoid it.
“It vas…a Demon.” He croaked. “Burkov summoned a Devil.”
The sudden pride he was in his “brother’s” face was more blinding than the lights. The boy didn’t’ have to say anything. Henrick knew that the boy thought him responsible for slaying the demon. He was, but he didn’t’ want to hear that praise. He didn’t even want to feel it. After seeing the spots on his soul, Hanz didn’t think he ever deserved praise again. He was too dirty for it. Only a fiend would have done what he did. Only a monster would have made the deal he had, with full knowledge that it might not have turned out the way it did.
Nessmont forced on. “After the assembly, they completely killed the subject. Went on to talk about Krumm and how he was doing at Hogwarts School. They say the Dark Lord returned. No one believes it…But it Burkov really summoned a Demon, maybe, HE has returned.”
That was not news he wanted to hear right after returning to the land of the living. If Voldimort really had returned, the situation in the wizarding world was dire indeed. People like Anya…and himself…were now in grave danger. That news almost made him regret not actually accepting that contract and sharing such immense power.
“He von’t come here, I zhink, so zhere is nozhing to vorry about, right?” Hanz only withed he could stop worrying. However, the boys; next words made his concern quadruple.
“Fiona was worried about you. After I brought you here to bring you back from the Duat…she sat with you. She even kicked me out a few times. She sat with you for days.”
“How long?” He wondered.
“You’ve been out a week. She booted me whoever that huge eagle of yours came. I always managed to get back in though. Last time, she had stunned it on order to get your mail for it. She said you had told her once that she could. Anyway, I’ve been taking care of the bird too. He doesn’t stay stunned long. Seems to love me more than her.”
His dread was complete. He felt worse than he had facing the Demon. She knew! She had to know! There was no way she could not know. Fiona knew about Anya. He knew it would only be a matter of tome before she confronted with the knowledge of it. He had to do something. He wanted if Durmstrang would offer his transfer papers as soon as he was up to moving again. He supposed they might. As one of the few that knew the truth behind what had actually happened, it might be best for the school if he leave it and never come back. It was a real option. One he was suddenly, seriously considering. First though, he would have to deal with Fiona.
He looked to Nessmont and gave the boy a hesitant smile. “Dunke, for helping Rheinheardt.” It was his way of also thanking the boy for reuniting his soul with his body and then looking after him while he was still unconscious. It was also thanks for that most vital of information. He really owed Nessmont so much now. It was just too bad he’d no longer stay around to pay the boy back. Not when school in another country all together seemed like such an idea solution. One he would pursue. Perhaps he could ask Krumm about Hogwarts when the other returned.
“Now…vould ju be so kind as to help me up.” He kept his voice light, He could not betray himself now. Not now or ever again. “I haf not eaten in a week, und zhere is still much to do before zhe end of the school year.”
