Chapter 12- A New Term and A Close Call
Love…War…What’s the Difference?
A New Term and A Close Call
A new term began. To keep their marriage a secret, Hermione and Severus wore their wedding sets on chains around their necks. Hermione wore hers on the necklace Severus had given her at the beginning of November.
“So, when will we give our potions to the Order?” Hermione asked as she worked on her Astronomy homework.
“I don’t know. There has been a new development and Albus has called an Order meeting tomorrow night,” Severus answered as he graded papers.
“I wonder what kind of development?” she said thoughtfully.
“I’ll find out tomorrow and let you know,” he replied.
Just then, Lucius came bursting into the sitting room, startling both Hermione and Severus. “Lucius, what’s wrong?” Severus asked as he got to his feet.
“This,” Lucius answered as he handed Severus the EVENING PROPHET.
“Shit,” Severus hissed.
“This is bad. ‘Five Death Eaters escaped from Azkaban in the early hours this morning. Draco Malfoy and Blaise Zambini were two of the five Death Eaters that attacked Head Girl, Hermione Granger and Professor Severus Snape. Rudolph Le Strange, Theodore Nott and Walden McNair, were responsible for the murder of Miss Granger’s parents last April.’ What do we do?” Hermione questioned.
“I don’t know. Albus hasn’t said anything as of yet,” Lucius replied.
“This is probably the new development Albus told me about,” Severus sighed as he sat beside Hermione.
“Look, when you go to the Order meeting tomorrow night, I will stay with Hermione,” Lucius said.
“You will?” Severus asked relieved.
“Yes. I promise this, to both of you, I will protect Hermione. It’s because of her I have my life back. You never need to worry about her,” Lucius vowed.
Severus stood up and pulled Lucius into a brotherly embrace. Hermione smiled. “Then I know I’ll be well protected. Between the two of you, Harry, Ron, Ginny, and the Weasleys, how could I not be,” she said.

“Narcissa, I have a mission for you my pet,” Voldemort stated.
“What do you want me to do?” she asked as she moved beside him.
“I want you to kill Hermione Granger. Dumbledore has called an Order meeting for tomorrow. She will be alone,” he answered.
“How will I get to her?” she questioned.
“With this,” he said as he handed her a portkey.
“It will be done,” she smiled.

Severus kissed Hermione. He nodded to Lucius and left his chambers. All day, he had a feeling something was going to happen. He shook it off as he made his way to meet with Albus and Harry.
“Hermione, what’s wrong?” Lucius asked as she let out a sigh.
“I’m just a bit jealous. Harry gets to go to the meeting. I mean, I understand why, but I wish I could go,” Hermione said.
“Listen, soon this war will be over and you can join the Order. I’m sure they’d let you join, but that would make you an even bigger target than you already are,” he replied.
“I know. I guess I don’t like not being included,” she sighed.
“No one likes to be excluded from things,” he smiled.
Hermione nodded and returned the smile. She pulled out her Ancient Runes textbook and began on her homework. Lucius pulled a book from the bookshelf, sat back in one of the chairs, and began reading.

At 12 Grimmwauld Place, the Order members were gathered in the kitchen. Remus and Sirius were seated on either side of Severus and waiting for Albus to enter the room and begin the meeting.
“Snape, congratulations,” Sirius said.
“Huh?” Severus asked.
“Albus told us about your marriage. Don’t worry, you’re secret is safe,” Remus replied.
“Look, just take care of Hermione. She’s like a sister to Harry,” Sirius added.
“I will. And thank you,” Severus nodded.
“All right everyone. Can I have your attention,” Albus stated. Everyone fell silent. “Now, we have just received some new information. We all know about the break out from Azkaban. With this new information, we know when Voldemort will be attacking,” he continued.
“Who’s your source?” Moody asked.
“I am,” came a female voice.
Everyone stared in shock as Bellatrix LeStrange entered the kitchen. Everyone began talking at once. It took Albus a good five minutes to get everyone finally settled down.
“Just hear what she has to say before you begin planning a lynching,” Albus instructed.

Narcissa hid in the shadows of Severus’ bedroom. She had discovered a marriage license and a photo of Severus and Hermione. She couldn’t wait to pass this little bit of information on to Voldemort.
“Well, I’m off to bed Lucius,” she heard Hermione say.
“All right. I’ll wait here till Severus comes back. Sweet dreams Hermione,” Lucius replied.
Narcissa clutched the dagger. A few seconds later, Hermione entered the bedroom. Narcissa waited till Hermione’s back was turned before she struck. Just as Hermione began to climb into bed after changing, Narcissa made her move.
“What! Let me go!” Hermione yelled.
“Your husband will be so upset. But he’ll join you soon,” Narcissa whispered.
“AAAAHHHH!” Hermione screamed as Narcissa plunged the dagger deep into her back.
“Hermione!” Lucius cried.
Narcissa reactivated the portkey and disappeared just as Lucius burst into the room. He turned on the light. He let out a gasp and rushed to Hermione’s side and desperately checked for a pulse.

Albus, Severus, and Harry had just entered the castle when Lucius and Minerva came rushing toward them. “You need to come with us now,” Minerva said.
“What’s wrong?” Albus asked.
“Hermione was attacked…” Lucius started.
Severus rushed past him and ran for the hospital wing. He could hear the others behind him, but all he cared about was getting to his wife. He burst into the hospital wing and began looking around.
“Poppy!” he cried.
“Severus, she back there with three healers from St. Mungo’s. They’ve been working non-stop for the last hour,” Minerva explained as she and the others stopped behind him.
“Lucius what happened?” Severus demanded.
“I’m not sure. She had just entered the bedroom. A few minutes later, I heard her scream. I entered the room and found her at the foot of the bed with a deep stab wound in her back. I grabbed her and rushed here. I’m sorry. I failed her,” Lucius answered sadly.
“It’s not your fault. All I want to know is, is she going to be okay,” Severus said.
“Severus,” Poppy stated as she approached them.
“Is she all right? Poppy I need to know,” Severus asked desperately as he spun around.
“Let’s talk privately,” Poppy replied.
Severus followed her into her office. Harry, Albus, Minerva, and Lucius, sat down to wait. Poppy closed the door behind her and let out a weary breath.
“Severus, Hermione is in bad shape. Her heart stopped on us three different times. We finally got her stabilized. Whoever did this, planned to kill her. The dagger pierced her lung and had a poison on it. We got rid of the poison, but it took us a while to finally patch her lung,” Poppy reported.
“Oh god,” Severus whispered as he dropped into a chair.
“She’s going to be here for a while. One of the healers will remain here. She’s still not out of danger yet. The next 48 to 72 hours will be critical,” Poppy said.
“I…I need to see her. Please. She’s my wife. I can’t leave her,” Severus pleaded.
Poppy nodded. Severus got to his feet and followed Poppy to the private room where Hermione was in. Severus entered the room. Three Healers were standing around Hermione.
“You her husband?” one of the healers asked.
“Yes,” Severus answered.
“I’m Thomas McRenyolds. I’ll be remaining here till she’s well enough to be moved back to your chambers,” Thomas said.
“Can I…” Severus started.
“Of course. There’s a chair ready for you,” Thomas smiled.
Severus sat in the chair and took Hermione’s hand in his. Then he did something he hadn’t done since he was a small child. He began praying. Hoping that whoever was listening, would give Hermione the strength to pull through.
