A Matter of Trust
Chapter Twelve – A Matter of Trust.
Hermione barely controlled her sudden urge to yell “WHAT?” She felt that it was just a little too cliché. Instead she settled for looking incredulous and asking, “WHAT?” (Ok so she wasn’t too great at controlling herself.)
Severus on the other hand, who was completely unaware of her inner struggle, dismissed her behavior as typically Gryffindor and so responded in the appropriately Slytherin manner.
“I need to know the location of your parents Miss Granger.” Apparently the appropriate Slytherin thing to do was to repeat his earlier statement as though she were five years old. This may have been the underlying cause of the centuries of tension between Slytherins and Gryffindors although it was probably not helped by the Gryffindor habit of becoming sarcastic and disrespectful to an authority figure as Hermione was so keen on demonstrating.
“Well now that you have cleared that little matter up for me… I still have no idea what you are talking about!” Hermione shouted but then she happened to come across the place where she had left her good sense and remembered that she was talking to the only teacher in all of Hogwarts who would quite possibly murder her in her sleep some night when he was feeling particularly vengeful, and she promptly shut her mouth and blushed furiously.
Severus was in fact so taken aback by her outburst that it took him a moment to remember that he was supposed to snap at her in response. By the time he remembered, it was already far too late for that and so he was forced to put up a show of reluctant patience instead of righteous fury as was his custom in such situations.
“If you are quite finished Miss Granger?” when she showed no signs of protesting he continued. “I do not ask out of a mere morbid curiousity. I need the knowledge so that someone will continue to be secret keeper when I remove the memory from your mind.” Hermione looked as though she would scream, so he held up a hand to silence her and continued. “Until you have learned proper Occlumency, your parents’ safety is at risk in your unprotected mind. I will keep the memory of their whereabouts for you until you are able to protect your thoughts sufficiently.” He saw the girl across from him relax slightly but she still looked wary. “I will give you some time to think on this matter. However I advise you to consider quickly as every moment that your mind is unblocked you are putting your parents in danger.”

As Severus had been explaining his reasons for needing the location of her parents’ house, Hermione was using her amazing ability to multitask to her advantage. She was listening to Severus while also considering her options in her own mind. Thus when Severus began to speak about giving her time to think over his offer, it was her turn to silence him.
“Professor, I don’t need any time to consider.” This seemed to shock her teacher and she realized that he had undoubtedly been under the same mistaken impression as everyone else who claimed to know her. That assumption was that in order for Hermione to make any decision she needed hours of quiet reflection and every available fact on the matter.
While this may have been true in other situations, she was already in possession of every fact necessary to make this decision.
“Miss Granger, this is an important choice for you to make and it is not one that you should make light…”
“Yes professor, it is an important decision and I am not making it lightly.” Hermione chose to ignore the look of indignation that he gave her and the sinking feeling in her stomach when she realized that she had dared to interrupt him twice in one night. She focused instead on making him understand her reasons. “You are the most skilled Occlumens ever. You were able to fool Voldemort while under extreme torture from the Cruciatus curse. I have no doubt in your ability to protect my secret from anyone and everyone and even though I know you will probably make fun of my Gryffindor sentiments, I trust you.”
Severus was staring at her as though she were a ghost.
Hermione conjured an empty vial from midair, lifted her wand to her temple and removed her memory of the secret kept location, placed it in the vial and pushed the stopper in tight.
Still more staring from Severus.
She placed the vial containing her memory on the desk in front of him and got to her feet.
If he kept staring at her she was going to have to check to see if she had indeed turned transparent.
“Thank you for your help Professor.” She said a little too loudly.
She looked down at her hands, no… definitely still opaque.
She walked to the door and turned the handle. Apparently the click of the door handle worked where her voice had not because the Professor snapped out of his stupor and called after her.
“Your lessons will begin Saturday night at 7:00.”
With that Hermione left the room.

A/N – Sorry about the wait. No really I am. No matter how many times I say it, it doesn’t get any less sincere. Neither does my extreme excitement over reviews; even the ones that just say that my chapters are too short and too far in between. Lol. Love you all, talk to you soon.
