Chapter 12
They had just finished their last exams the day before and were relaxing in the shadows under the trees by the lake. McGonagall had told them that they would receive their exam results the following evening at a small feast. It would only be the four of them and their teachers, plus the parents of Ron and Hermione. Harry didn’t want his uncle and aunt their and Narcissa Malfoy hadn’t returned an answer to the invite.
“It’s all right,” Draco said in a harsh “didn’t expect her to come” tone, but inside he was hurting. It was a big day, and she didn’t even care enough for him to be there for that… He stared at the sky not wanting the others to see the disappointment in his eyes.
“Hi, may I join you?” Skylark walked up from the lake, drenched, smiling as if she had just won the lottery.
“You sure love the water, eh!” Harry said.
“Mmmm…” Skylark said still smiling. “It’s in my blood”
“Her Great great great grandmother was a Naiad, you know a water sprit? Cool eh!?” Ron said smiling from ear to ear.
“My given name is Pegaeae Scylla after my Great great great grandmother and my Great great grandmother. But I shortened it to Peggy, much easier not having to explain my name all the time!” Skylark shook her head sprinkling them all in water, laughing.
“Hey! That’s cold!” Hermione said putting her hands up to cover the book she was reading. The she saw it. A ring… A ring that wasn’t there when she saw the nymph earlier. “Oh, my God!”
Draco looked lazy up. “What!”
“She…. He… They… RON!” She threw the book away and jumped to her feet, bouncing up and down clapping her hands, she shrieked with joy.
Harry and Draco now really bewildered looked over at Ron who just smirked as Skylark sat down by his side.
“They are getting married… Look… Look at the ring!” Hermione squealed. “Let me see! Oh, it’s beautiful! Oh my Gosh! I’m so happy for you.”
“Congrats, mate,” Harry grinned. “How EVER did you keep that a secret?” Ron just smiled and pulled Skylark closer. She put her head on his shoulder.
“Well, I didn’t see that one coming so soon.” Draco said. “When is the big day?” And why did that little Weasel have to pop the question on this day! Seeing Hermione so happy for the couple, made him even more sure that the ring, that he had been carrying around for weeks, should be sitting on her finger.
“I… Well… We first have to tell Mum and Dad.” Ron said proudly. “We’re going there after the feast tonight.”
“They’ll love you, Skylark… Peggy…” Hermione said holding the young professor hands, the girls giggling. “Have you started to plan the wedding?” Hermione asked and the two girls walked off talking dresses, flowers, music and magic.
“Damn you, Weasley,” Draco whispered, Harry laughing…
“What?” Ron looked surprised at Draco.
“I has going to ask Mi to marry me tonight!” Draco squinted at Ron, “because of you, I now look like a copycat!”
Harry laughed so hard he tumbled sideways down on the grass, holding his stomach while tears rolled down his face.
“What’s so funny?” Both Ron and Draco snarled at Harry, just causing Harry to gasp for air, squishing his eyes tight, hammering his fist into the ground.
“He’s lost it!” Ron said.
“Uh-huh!” Draco answered looking worriedly at the black haired boy laughing on the ground.
“It’s…. It’s…Just… You two… Fighting ‘bout… stupid…” Harry drew a deep breath then sat up. His eyes changing from happy to cheerless. “You both are going to leave here, with your loved ones. I… I'm the boy who lived… the hero of the wizarding world… I’m going to live alone in a big empty, messy house. Ironic, eh?!”
The two other boys felt terrible. They hadn’t thought about the fact that when Harry left Hogwarts, he had no one to get home to.
“Sorry, Harry… We didn’t… Ermmm… Sorry.” Draco mumbled then reached his hand to Harry helping him to his feet.
“You’re always welcome at the Burrow, Harry… You know that!” Ron said.
“Maybe, but I don’t think you'll want to live there when you’re a newlywed.” Harry looked away. “Guess life goes on, if we are ready or not.” He kicked a small branch, sending it flying.
Ron and Draco looked at each other, put one arm around Harry to comfort him, and the three boys walked up to the castle.
Draco was getting ready for dinner, thinking about Harry’s reaction earlier. Draco had never seen Harry lose it like that. The thought of being alone seemed to scare Harry more that anything. Draco turned the thoughts around and around in his head. If Hermione said yes to his proposal, he would tell her about what happened after she had left. If she didn’t mind he would ask Harry to move into the manor with them. It was a gigantic manor so they could have separate wings. In that way they would have privacy, but Harry wouldn’t be alone.
If his father knew he would hex him into the next decade. He laughed coldly. Well, he would have, if he hadn’t gone mad in Azkaban. The latest new from the prison was that his father had started to talk to himself and to an imaginary friend. Lucius refused to eat and was loosing weight rapidly. Draco shuddered. He wouldn’t dwell on it.
The door slowly opened. He expected it to be Mi and stopped dead when he saw McGonagall and…
“Good evening, Son,” Narcissa spoke softly. “May I enter?”
Draco nodded and looked to McGonagall, pleading with her not to go, unsure what his mother wanted and why she was here.
The Headmistress followed the pale witch into the room and stood by the door nodding to Narcissa to go on.
Narcissa’s icy blue eyes studied her son, watching his face for any reaction. She calmly said, “You’ve grown into a fine young wizard, Draco. I’m sorry I haven’t been in contact with you. I was told you were…" Tears started to form in the corners of her eyes. “They told me Voldemort had…” she couldn’t bring her self to say it. She looked away.
Draco just stood there. His heart was racing. They had told her that he was dead. She hadn’t known he has alive. But after Voldemort’s death she MUST have heard. He was shaking and breathing rapidly in very small breaths.
“The Death Eaters told your mother that the dark lord had killed you when you failed. She didn’t hear that you were alive until an owl tracked her down in France.” McGonagall said quietly.
For a moment their eyes meet. Draco felt a jolt of pain run through him.
“Please… Please… Draco.” Tears started to fall from Narcissa’s eyes as she begged her son to forgive her for giving up on him.
It tore Draco’s heart apart to see her in such misery. “Mum,” he slowly walked up to her and when he touched her, she almost jumped back. He felt salty tears run down his own cheeks. “Mum,” he said in a soft voice. She embraced him and he hid his face in her hair. Both holding on like the other would Disapparate if they didn’t hold on tight.
After a while Draco slowly pushed himself away from Narcissa, wiping away his tears. “I’m glad to see you. Thought you had given up on me… Hell some days I thought you hated me for helping to bring an end to Voldemort.”
“Oh no, my sweet boy… I’m so proud that you turned away from the path of your father… If only I had been stronger…” She sighed wiping away a teardrop.
“Draco… Are you rea…” Hermione walked into the room not knowing that he had company. “Oh, Sorry. I’ll just go.” She looked baffled at the tall, blonde woman holding Draco’s hand, sitting on his bed.
“Mi! Come on in… I’d like to introduce you to my mother.” He smiled warmly at her and waved her over.
When McGonagall had seen that the two Malfoy’s didn’t try to kill each other she decided to leave.
Hermione walked up to the bed. Narcissa stood up. “A pleasure to meet the woman that has stolen my son’s heart.” The tall witch said with a smile.
“A pleasure to meet the woman that bore the man I love under hers!” Hermione replied and the two women smiled to each other. Hermione liked her much better without her husband there to ruin it all.
Turning to Draco, Hermione asked if he has ready. He shook his head and walked up to the mirror to finish dressing. He clapped his pocket, then turned to the two ladies chatting by the bed.
“Mum, could I steal Mi away for a little while?”
Narcissa smiled and said that she would wait for them at the hourglasses.
All of a sudden Draco got really nervous. Hermione looked at him curiously. “Draco, are you all right?” She asked in a slightly worried voice.
“Please sit down, Mi,” he said with a shaking voice.
Oh no, she thought… He is breaking up with me… Tears began to fill her eyes, but Draco didn’t notice or maybe he thought they were tears of joy?
“Mi, when we first meet we grew to hate each other. I hurt you so many times and still you helped me when I needed a friend. We became more that friends. I've thought about this for weeks now. I’m moving back to the manor. And I don’t think I can live there with out you.” He felt his throat constrict and he swallowed before he continued.
“Mi, Hermione… Love… Will you be my bride? Will you marry me?”
She blinked. Then her jaw dropped. That wasn’t quite that she had expected. She was speechless.
“Mi?” Draco asked worriedly. Didn’t she want him that way? “Mi???”
“Yes!” She nodded.
“Yes, what?” He wasn’t sure.
“Yes! I’ll marry you Draco Malfoy! Oh Gosh…" She started to breath very fast, “I’m…I’m...” she felt dizzy and Draco sat down beside her, putting his arm around her. “Calm down, love… You are going to have a heart attack.” He smiled and kissed her nose. “We can’t have that, now can we, Mrs. Malfoy?”
“Oh my Gosh!” Hermione whispered, slowly catching her breath.
“I almost wanted to injure Weasel when I saw the ring. He made me feel like a copycat.” Draco grinned then threw Hermione back onto the bed.
“You’re mine, all mine!” He kissed her with such passion she felt her head twirl.
Breaking the kiss he looked at her. “By the way, how would you feel, if I asked Harry to move into the manor with us? It’s enormous so he’ll get his own wing. Mum will still use the master bedroom, and we’ll take the north wing where my old room lies. Don’t want him to stay alone in Sirius’ old house. Too many memories.”
Hermione thought about it and nodded. “Then you two could floo to work together. That would definitely make the wizarding world talk!” They laughed a little and then got up and started to walk to the door.
“Ohh, by the way Dray… “
“Yes, Mi?”
“I’m pregnant”
