Chapter 12: Midnight Werewolf
Albus, Leon, and Scorpius were squeezed together under the invisibility cloak as they made their way down to the whomping willow. Leon hissed and glared back at Scorpius, “Quit stomping on my feet!”
“I would if you quit putting your feet under mine!” Scorpius whispered back.
Albus shushed them, “Be quiet we’re almost there.” They reached the tree and they wiggled down into the tunnel under it before pulling off the cloak. Albus smiled, “Good thing James told me how to get by the tree.”
The other two nodded and began their wait for the houself. After about five minutes Leon got out a deck of cards and started to show the pure-blooded Scorpius how to play war. A crack sounded while Albus was in mid-war with Scorpius causing the three boys to jump and crack their heads against the top of the low hanging cave. Scorpius looked out while rubbing his head and blinking away the tears of pain from his eyes.
A rather old looking house elf was standing there in a white pillowcase which matched the fluffy hair coming out of his ears. The old elf’s skin seemed to be a bit too big for his bony frame and his eyes were a pale watery blue. The elf spotted Albus behind Scorpius and bowed low enough for his nose to touch the ground, “Young Master Potter! Master James asked for Kreacher to come and see you!”
Albus pressed the knot in the tree which made it freeze and called the elf in before explaining the situation to Kreacher, “So our major issue right now is we need to get there and back without being detected and, if you could, we’d prefer it if we could be back in the same night.”
Kreacher nodded, “Kreacher can place the spells for master and bring them here. Give Kreacher ten minutes and he’ll be back.”
Albus had just barely nodded before the elf was gone. This time all three boys started to pour over the advanced potions book and to jot down the notes and ingredients they thought might help their potion. Leon wrote another ingredient down, “Yew branches are used to bring spirits to the Earth.”
Albus nodded, “And the leaves of mistletoe are used to keep the heart beating.”
Scorpius chuckled, “Sweet…listen to this ‘two buckeyes mixed in the juice of milkweed and parts of monkshood make a potion to restore blood.’”
Albus and Leon shook their heads and said almost simultaneously, “masochist.”
It was some time later, just before Kreacher’s ten minutes were up, when Leon exclaimed, “Oh here! Read this! Listen to this! ‘While a successful spell or potion has not been found to bring back the dead, many have tried. Though they all seemed to be failures some alchemists believe that if they had added in the elixir of life (see sorcerers stone) to the already extremely potent mixtures that they would succeed.’ This is just what we need! They list the ingredients and things just below it!”
Albus laughed and punched the air triumphantly as Scorpius hugged Leon. Kreacher’s crack of return wasn’t noticed though so the little elf came over and dropped an old picture album in Albus’s lap. Albus looked down then smiled at the elf, “Thanks Kreacher!”
Kreacher smiled brightly, “No problem at all young master!” He handed albus a piece of parchment, “This is a map for Young Master to find the other portkey. It isn’t timed so Master can use it whenever Master is done.”
Albus nodded and got a firm grip on the picture album cueing the other two to do the same.

The night was young as a mighty werewolf let loose a heat-stopping howl into the frozen winter darkness. Though it was only towards the end of October, the nights were getting more and more silent and the half inch of snow on the ground was more than enough to chase away the birds. He paused for a moment to take in breath through his bleach white fangs then let loose another howl to follow the first up to the rising moon.
The werewolf turned to what looked like two ordinary wolves behind him and growled slightly in his sign of dominance, “The potter boy is mine.” He growled, “You two can have the blondes.”
The other two nodded and the one that was white in color turned into her human form, “Grayback, Lady said that the boys were to appear soon, shouldn’t we hide somewhere?”
The alpha, Grayback, gave her a glare that would almost kill a person with its angry radiation, “They’re first years, my dear,” he said in a sinister voice, “Do you really think they can harm werewolves? Why don’t you take a tip from Hunter and stay silent for once.”
The female whimpered and turned into the wolf form once more to join the brown wolf that had backed into the trees to avoid Grayback’s anger. Grayback turned from the other two to watch the surroundings with his silver eyes, the one thing besides his dominance that set him apart from the other wolves, and breathe in through his noise to track down the boys that were supposed to be appearing near their location.
“Damn I hate houses.” Grayback muttered more to himself than the other wolves, “as soon as we’re done here, we’re burning these down. I don’t care who’s inside.”

The trio appeared in the middle of an old abandoned village in what seemed to be the middle of nowhere. Leon looked around as they let go of the portkey, “So where the hell are we?”
Scorpius looked around for a sign, “According to the street sign, Spinner’s end.”
Albus smiled slightly, “Well, we’re in the right place. I’ll go find the house and see if I can figure out where Snape is buried, Scorpius you stay with Leon and the both of you can figure out this damned potion.”
The two blondes nodded as Albus turned to what was left of the houses. After walking down quite a way and passing plenty of broken street lights he finally found a house that looked as though it had seen more life than any of the others on the street. Albus shrugged and peeked into the yard which was filled with many plants that Albus recognized as potion ingredients. He chuckled and went up to the door to peek inside the house just to make sure and sure enough the walls were lined with bookshelf after bookshelf all having to do with some subject or another some magic and some not.
Albus came back out and inspected the yard for some difference in the soil and just barely found a small grave marker that had been hidden by the plants and looked like a hand carved wooden cross. He estimated the grave’s size and started to dig with his hands not wanting to do any damage to the bones by levitating the dirt out. He was maybe a foot or so deep in digging when he felt someone behind him, “Scorpius? Did you finish helping Leon? Is the potion ready?”
“Oh sure,” Said a voice a little too deep to be Scorpius, “Everything is ready for you.”
Albus looked back slowly to be face to face with a very tall rather muscular man who was only in black pants and had shoulder length black hair with gray streaks through it, “Um….hi. Can I help you?”
The man smiled, “Yes you can actually. I’m looking for fresh flesh and blood. More specifically, Potter blood. Know where I can find any?”
Albus gulped, “n-no.” He backed up then took off at a run.
Grayback smirked, “I love it when they try to run.” He chased after him letting lose a ripping howl to cue the other two and tackled the small boy in only a few seconds, “Any last requests?”
Albus was shaking and had had his glasses knocked away showing his eyes bright and scared, “P-Please….I-I d-d-don’t wanna d-d-die!”
“Too bad little one.” Grayback smirked and sunk his fangs into the child below him just as the full moon came from behind the clouds and reached the peak of midnight signaling a large clock far off to start its chime.
Meanwhile Scorpius and Leon had been backed into an old house by the two other wolves. Leon had turned sheet white and glanced at Scorpius, “Any ideas?”
“Two actually. Play dead or run.” Scorpius whispered back afraid to talk to loud around the full werewolves.
“I like the second one.” Leon muttered reaching for a wall or door or something to mark where he was. Albus’s scream suddenly cut the air like a knife causing the other two to go paler still. Leon shook like a leaf, “This was a bad idea.”
“Quit complaining. Albus is in trouble and I’m going to help him!” Scorpius pulled his wand out and caused an old flower pot to explode distracting the two wolves in front of them long enough for him to run towards where Albus was.
Grayback looked over at Scorpius as the blonde ran up to the scene and the clouds broke for a split second showing the man with blood around his mouth in a sickening smile. Scorpius’s stomach churned but he shook his head and pointed his wand at the wolf-man, “WINGARDIUM LEVIOSA!”
Grayback was lifted off his feet and into the air. With a slight flick of his wand Scorpius sent the wolf through the top of the old run-down mill then ran to his fallen friend, “ALBUS!”
The raven haired boy coughed slightly and gave Scorpius a weak smile then handed him the parchment with the map on it, “get….the portkey……please….”
Scorpius nodded, yelled for Leon and grabbed what was mapped out as the portkey before running back to Albus, “Here. Leon isn’t here yet let me find your glasses!”
Leon ran over a few moments later covered in cold sweat, “I got rid of the wolves.”
Scorpius nodded then kneeled down and pressed his lips against Albus’s just happy of the fact his friend was alive then made sure all three had their hands on the portkey before muttering the word to get them to leave.
