Lupin's Talk Pt2

Author's Notes: This is the second conversation between Hunter and Professor Lupin and in it Hunter reveals his darkest secret to the only teacher he trusts enough to tell.

Hunter returned to his classes with the other students after the holidays. It was now the end of his first week back and he had detention with Professor Lupin. He kissed Katie goodbye as he left the common room and made his way to the Professor's office.

When he arrived he found the Professor grading papers at his desk. His teacher looked up and smiled at him. "Evening Hunter," the werewolf said. "I don't have anything for you tonight so how about we just chat for awhile then you can go back to your dorm?"

Hunter nodded and sat down in a chair in front of the Professor's desk. "What do you want to talk about?" He asks in a calm, cool voice. Since the other students return Hunter's slipped back into his old comfortable routine.

Still smoking and refusing to follow the dress code he hardly speaks to anyone except Katie and Carla unless they speak to him first. Must of the other students didn't know about what happened to him over the holidays and those that did weren't saying anything.

Ron and Harry knew as did the rest of the Gryffindor Quidditch team along with Hermione and Ginny. But they respected Hunter's privacy enough not to question him about it. He was sociable enough when engaged in conversation but other wise he was mostly the same as he had been when he first arrived.

"How about what's going on with you and Miss Bell?" The Professor asks setting his papers aside. "I've noticed you two spending a great deal of time together. Along with young Miss Baker."

Hunter smiled at the mention of the two girls in his life. "Katie and I are dating and we've kind of adopted Carla as our little sister." He tells the teacher. "I went to school with Carla's sister and since I found out she's been here at Hogwarts I've been looking after her."

Remus smiles at him. "So I've heard." There is a faint hint of mischief to the teacher's smile that doesn't go unnoticed by the sharp young man.

"They started it," Hunter says plainly. His old barriers begin to go up because of the direction the conversation just took.

Remus sensed the young man pulling away from him. "I know," The Professor said quickly. "I wasn't accusing you." Lupin let out a sigh. "I know the boys were tormenting her and you came to her rescue. I'm sorry if it sounded like what you did was wrong."

Hunter looked at the Professor with a raised brow and the older man laughed. "Okay so maybe your actions were wrong but not the intent behind them." Remus got up and walked around to the front of his desk. Taking a seat on his desk he looks at Hunter and sees that the young man is slowly lowering his defenses.

"When I was your age I had a special group of friends that I cared about very much." The Professor tells him. "While most of them are died I still felt the same about them that you do about young Miss Baker. You care about her and want to protect her. Never feel guilty or like you have to defend your feelings to anyone."

Hunter nods allowing his barriers to fade away. "I'm going to trust you with a secret," he begins. He leans in closer to Lupin and stares his Professor right in the eyes as he continues. "And if you tell anyone, even the Headmaster." His eyes fill with the same rage that paralyzed Professor Snape. "Professor or not I will kill you."

Professor Lupin pulls back, his eyes wide with fright. There is no doubt in his mind that the young man will make good on his promise. He knows it had been a promise and not a threat. Closing his eyes to collect his thoughts, he nods his understanding. "You have my word, whatever you tell me in this room will never pass my lips."

Hunter nods as his anger fades away just as quickly as it had arrived. "Carla's sister was my first love and my first lover." Professor Lupin is speechless but to his credit he nodded that he was listening.

"When Erica was nine her father began going into her room and raping her." Hunter said as he pulled out his cigarettes. Normally he would never smoke during detention and certainly never in a used classroom. But tonight he made an exception and Remus allowed it. "This continued until she left for school where I met her," he says taking a drag.

"Erica and I used to talk every night when I returned from detention. We talked about everything but she never told me about what her father did to her until Thanksgiving Vacation during our Second Year." Hunter takes another drag then flicks the ashes into an ashtray that Professor Lupin never even saw him conjure.

"After she told me I was furious," Hunter admitted. "I wanted to kill him for what he had done to her. what he continued to do to her until he finally killed her." Hunter notices the look of horror on Lupin's face but pays it no attention as he continues his tale. "Erica told me once, just before the end of that year, that she had allowed him to continually force himself on her so that her sister never had to go through what she had."

A million thoughts are running through the Professor's mind as Hunter tells him the story. Of all the horrors he's witness of all the pain he's endured in his own personal life he never knew that such a thing was possible. That's not entirely accurate. He had read newspaper reports and seen news broadcasts about things like this happening in the muggle world. But until tonight he had never realized that such a thing happened in the Wizarding World.

"It was in Third Year that I realized I was in love with her." Hunter said snapping the werewolf out of his thoughts. "Carla told me that Erica loved me too." Hunter closes his eyes as he considers the best way to continue. "Our only night together was the last night I saw her," He finally says.

"I don't regret what we did," Hunter says with true conviction. "Though it did make it harder when I read that her father had murdered her." He looks at Lupin and sees the reaction his story had on the older man. "What I just told isn't the secret I want you to keep." Now the Professor's truly shocked. "That was just the back ground information you needed to know for what I'm about to say."

Professor Lupin takes a moment to clear the lump that formed in his throat. "I understand," he manages to say. "Please, continue."

Hunter nods taking another drag from his cigarette. He offers Lupin the pack and grins as the teacher accepts. Hunter lights Remus' cigarette before he continues. "About a week before she was killed," he begins. "She sent me an owl saying that she was pregnant and hoped that I was the father and not him."

Professor Lupin gags on the cigarette smoke as the news shocks him even further. "She was..." The Professor begins.

"About two and a half months pregnant." Hunter finishes for him. Hunter puts out his cigarette before telling the rest of his secret to his teacher. "No one else knows and it has to remain that way because she wanted me to brew her an abortion potion when we returned to school."

At this last bit of news the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher lost all ability to speak. He was certain that he had heard Hunter correctly but he couldn't believe what he had heard. Hunter on the other hand was still able to speak and he did. "She couldn't take the risk of the baby being his and I agreed." Hunter gets up and begins pacing as he continues.

"She was too young to raise a baby and she didn't want her sister finding out what had happened." Hunter looks at the floor with his back to his teacher "She begged me to help her and I agreed." His voice was so full of pain that it was clear that he wouldn't have cared who the father was. "I had decided before I got home that I was going to ask her out when we returned to school.

"Her letter only cemented my decision," he said firmly. "I had vowed that no matter what happened I was going to always be there to look after her. And the next time she was pregnant I was going to raise 'our' child with her."

Hunter turns back around and looks Remus in the eyes again. "You are the only one I'm trusting with this secret." He says and Lupin can hear the truth behind the words. "Neither Katie not Carla must ever know."

Lupin nods. "You have my word," he assures the young man. "I shall take your secret with me to my grave." No matter how soon that maybe.

Hunter left and returned to Gryffindor Tower leaving the Professor alone with his thoughts. He had quite a few to sort through too. He had just learned that Hunter might have been a father at thirteen and had willingly agreed to brew a potion for an illegal abortion. In addition he also learned what Carla's sister had endured to protect her from their father.

He noticed that Hunter had left his cigarettes behind when he left. Picking them up he took one out and lit it with the tip of his wand. he then went to his private office and pulled out a bottle of fire whiskey from his desk and opening the bottle took a swig. Not normally a drinker and certainly not a smoker he made the exception to night. Some days it really doesn't pay to get out of bed.

Author's Notes: PLEASE don't kill me for what happened to Lupin. I swear he's fine, REALLY. Okay so now you all know the FULL story of Hunter and Erica's relationship. I promise that is the LAST surprise on his end concerning her. I won't tell you about Carla's secret until the time is right. And NO Katie isn't going to know that Hunter was prepared to kill an unborn child that MIGHT have been his. While I do believe that a woman has the right to choose, my personal and political views are not those of my characters. They are their own beings and have their own opinions. I merely convey those views and opinions to you, the reader.
