From Chapter 11: The Fall of the Red Rose
Severus stood at the edge of the rose garden. He hung his head in sorrow as he watched Alexander embrace Lily. He let the single red rose he held drop from his hand as he silently walked away.
Chapter 12: The Intuition of A Mother
Harry caught a shadowed movement from the corner of his eye. He pulled back and motioned to Lily to stay quiet. Soundlessly, he moved across the garden. He reached the space just beyond. From a distance, he could see Severus stalking toward the castle. He glanced around; his gaze fell on the single blood red rose on the ground. He picked it up and carefully dusted it off. He started to follow Severus, but remembered his mother waiting on him. He walked back to her, gave her a swift hug, and explained, “There’s something I need to take care of. I’ll see you tomorrow?” Lily nodded as she stood up, “Of course, Har…I mean Alexander.” She gave him a shrewd grin as her eye caught the rose in Harry’s hand. “Be careful. Severus can be prickly at best.”
Harry shook his head in amused bewilderment. Surely there must be some clairvoyant blood somewhere in his Mother’s family. The woman knew entirely too much.
***********
“I honestly don’t remember casting any spells on Sirius. I don’t know how Griphook came to the conclusion that I did.” The Headmaster was perplexed. Goblins usually did not make those types of mistakes. They had been at it for over two hours now and were still at the same place they started. Remus had gone from frantic to angry to beyond furious. Today was Thursday. They could not meet Griphook until Sunday. The old professor knew that the full moon was only 5 days away. Already, he could see signs of the werewolf struggling to come out, especially now that there was a chance of his mate being returned. “Gentlemen, I suggest we adjourn for tonight. I will look back through my personal journals and see if I can come up with something. Otherwise, we have no choice but to wait until Sunday.” Seething at his helplessness, Remus agreed and flooed home.
Severus got up and bid the professor, “Good Night, Albus.” As he was about to walk out the door, Dumbledore called out, “Severus, my dear boy, if you don’t mind, could you tell me more about young Alexander Harrison? I don’t seem to remember much about him.” Severus pivoted to look at his mentor, “Albus, I really don…”
“Please, Severus. It is important to me.” Albus interrupted, the twinkle back in full force in his clear blue eyes. Severus sighed. He never could refuse that gleam. “Yes, I suppose I could, if you can order us some tea and biscuits.”
“Of course, of course! Have a seat, dear boy.” Severus sat stiffly in the Headmaster’s uncomfortably overstuffed chair with the orange and green pattern and began to tell his tale.
***************
Severus stormed into his quarters. The seventh year was upset. He really shouldn’t be, he tried to reason with himself. Alexander had only been here, what, a day? It seemed like they had known each other for such longer. He had finally convinced himself that the dream about ‘Harry’ was his conscience having fun with him, and that the spark he had felt with Alexander was both real and mutual. As usual when he was upset, he began pacing before the cold fireplace and berating himself. “You’re an idiot, Severus. There is no way he could ever want you.”
“I believe I’d have to disagree with you on both parts, Sev.”
Severus halted so quickly that he almost fell down. Almost – Severus Snape does not fall, after all. Alexander was leaning against the doorway cradling the red rose in his hand. Severus swallowed the lump that suddenly appeared in his throat. He didn’t know what to say, what to think.
“First of all, from what I have seen so far,” Harry continued, “you are far from being an idiot. In the second place, I think you are strikingly sexy.” He allowed himself a little chuckle over the gob-smacked look on Severus’s face. He pushed off the door way and closed the door with a wave of his hand. He walked over toward the fireplace in what he hoped was a sexy stalking-predator way. He held out the rose to Severus. “I know that you have no real reason to believe me, but I want you to know something: I am very attracted to you. I don’t know how long I will be here, but I would like to explore whatever,” he waved his hand between himself and Severus; “this is between us. Another thing, I am not interested in Lily Evans, or any other person here.” Harry gave him a breathtaking smile. “Would you like to see where this goes?”
Severus stood in stunned disbelief, but only for a second. When the young man smiled at him, he returned the smile. Tentatively, he reached out and accepted the rose. He slowly pulled his wand and cast the strongest preservation spell he knew on the fragile bud. Then he gently placed it on the mantle. Harry watched in hopeful silence as Severus did all this. He would have held his breath, but he didn’t want to chance passing out and missing anything good. Severus’s eyes darkened as he stepped forward and placed his lips softly on Harry’s. Severus moaned at the first touch: his taste was so sweet and lips were firm but pliant. Severus took advantage of Harry’s gasp of surprise as he wrapped his arms around the young man, pulled him closer and deepened the kiss.

Minerva McGonagall was delighted to see that Severus was not in his quarters. Being Deputy Headmistress, and Albus Dumbledore’s lover for more than 30 years, had its privileges, she decided. Not only did she know the passwords to all apartments, but the castle cooperated with her as well. She quickly changed from cat form in order to search better. She knew Severus; therefore, she started at his desk. Minerva quickly found the letter from Griphook, one of the goblins at Gringotts. She read over it, and almost did a dance with happiness that one of her favorites might not be dead after all. She frowned when she read the part about her partner being responsible as he had never mentioned anything to her. She decided she would have to discuss it with him later.
She quickly scanned the shelves. She knew she would not have much time. As she neared the mantle, she saw a folded piece of very old parchment. She cautiously opened the paper. Her eyes widened when she read it. Going back to the desk, she pulled out a blank piece of parchment and cast a spell to copy the letter onto it. She re-folded the missive and carefully put it back on the mantle. The Transfiguration professor grinned at her success. She knew there was something more to it. Now, she just needed to find out about Draven Prince.
*****************
Remus arrived home with a bad temper and an even worse headache. He grabbed a candlestick from the small table next to the sofa and flung it across the room with all his might. It hit his small bookshelf with such force that it caused several books to tumble out. He raked his hand through his graying hair and sighed. “There’s nothing you can do, Remus. You need to calm down. You don’t need to destroy your house. What would Siri say if he saw you?” He sighed again and crossed over to the fallen books. As he picked them up and placed them back in the shelf, he noticed that one was his photo album from seventh year. He clutched the album to his chest as he sank down on the floor.
He opened the book to the front and ran his finger lovingly over a picture of Sirius. The image in the picture smiled, blew him a big kiss, and then turned around and wiggled his bottom in a provocative way. Remus laughed. That was his Padfoot. He continued to flip through the pages until he came one labeled, ‘Alexander Harrison, late May’. It caught his eye because the young man in the photograph would not move. Instead, Remus saw a small lightning bolt scar fade in and out on the boy’s forehead. “Holy Merlin,” Remus exclaimed, “Alexander is Harry!”
**************
Harry gave himself over to the kiss with complete abandon. Severus tasted wonderful – spice and mint, and something that was just…Severus. He moaned and placed his hands on Severus’s chest. Sev nipped at Harry’s bottom lip, and then plunged back into the kiss, his tongue teasing Harry’s. Harry slid his arms up to lock around Sev’s neck. His hands found baby-fine black hair and pulled the assistant professor closer. Severus slid his hands around to cup Harry’s round buttocks and lifted him up. Harry wrapped his legs around Sev’s waist as the teenager carried Harry to the couch. He laid Harry back on the cushion and followed him down, never breaking their all-consuming kiss. Severus leaned back to start working on his soon-to-be lover’s shirt.
The logs in the fireplace blazed to life in sickly green flames. Both Harry and Severus jumped apart as they heard an aristocratic voice drawl, “My, my cousin. You certainly do work fast.”
****************
“Master, your plans are proceeding on schedule. By this time tomorrow, the Ministry will be yours.”
Bright blue eyes gazed into the smoldering fire as the servant relayed the news. “That is most excellent news.” The slender hand waved the messenger away. The Master picked up a glass and took a deep drink. “Most excellent news, indeed.”
******************
Harry excused himself quickly, embarrassed to be caught in such a compromising position by Lucius Malfoy. He almost ran to the bathroom. He turned on the faucet and slung a large handful of cold water on his face. He looked at his reflection in the mirror. His lips were dark red and swollen from the kiss. He smiled. That went so much better than he expected. He smiled and headed to his bedroom. Maybe this wouldn’t be so bad after all.
******************
Lucius knew his cousin would not be happy to be interrupted. He could tell Severus was attracted to the young man when they met. He fought back a chuckle.
“Luci, you have abominable timing. What on earth could you want?” Severus snarled as he watched Alexander practically run from the room.
“Now cousin, you know I don’t do it on purpose. It just happens to be one of my many gifts. I called to invite you, and your friend, to Narcissa’s birthday celebration on July 1st.”
Severus chortled at his cousin’s admission, “I wonder, Luc, if “Cissa finds your timing abominable as well? Or does she cast spells to prevent that sort of thing?”
Lucius blushed and answered arrogantly, “My wife has made no complaints as to my performance. In fact, I can assure you that she considers me as a treasured pet.”
Severus howled in laughter at the mental image conjured by Luc’s words. Collars, leashes, and big, pink, fluffy pillows embroidered with “Luc” on them danced through his mind. Lucius shook his head as he realized what had Sev so amused. “Well, damn it man! Are you going to attend or not?”
“I will ask Alexander if he would like to come, however, I am quite sure that I will be there, at least for a short while.”
It was Luc’s turn to laugh. “Oh, I’m sure Alexander would like to come. I asked if he would like to attend the celebration.”
“Touché. I’ll let you know soon. Good night Lucius.” Severus chuckled as he ended the fire call. Seeing that Alexander had already gone to bed, he decided to go to his own room and, as the saying goes, ‘take matters into his own hands’.
