Chapter 12
Hermione explained everything to Draco and then told the whole story to an impatiant Ron and Harry. By the end they looked quite dazed. They just sat there and stared into the distance. They had only started believing her when she had shown them her ears. Hermione snapped her fingers in front of their faces and when that didn't work drew some water from a vase, splashed it on their faces and used a blast of icy air to freeze it to their faces.
They scraped it off.
"What was that for?" Ron asked.
"To wake you up. You were staring out into space. I need your opinion."
"Wow. Just wow. Can you show us some stuff? I mean with the elements. Do something really cool." Ron pleaded.
"You have already seen my power."
"Yes but I didn't know what it was so I didn't pay attention. Pleeeease?" He pleaded. Draco glared at him.
"Fine but let's go outside. I have more to work with there. The only element I can create is fire otherwise I can only manipulate it."
"Outside?" Draco asked questioningly.
"Who cares now? Everyone knows what I am anyway." She took them all outside and over to the lake. Then she turned and faced them. "As long as I am showing off my power I may as well use it for the benifit of others. Harry the final battle is very near. Even nearer now that everyone knows what I am."
She didn't explain herself further but stood perfectly straight and took a deep breath. She punched the ground and the earth rippled outwards to make an enclosure about the size of a small lake. Part of it went into the real lake but most of it was on the grounds. She made another little wall only up to about her knees inside the enclosure and created a fire within it. Then she stopped and looked at her audience which now included most of the students of Hogwarts all of whom had their mouths open. Hermione blushed.
"Mione you didn't show us anything you can do with water or air." Harry pointed out. Hermione left the enclosure and all of Hogwarts followed her eager to see more. Hermione walked out onto the lake and right to the middle then she let go her magic and dropped into the lake. Everyone gasped and then gasped again as Hermione rose out of the water and into the air encased in a frozen orb as clear as glass that was spinning like a top. She swooped through the air until she was right over them and then let go her magic so that a large amount of the crowd got soaked as the water unfroze and Hermione drifted slowly to the ground. She looked over at the drenched students.
"Alright, show's over. All those students not in the DA leave, everyone in the DA come over into the enclosure. Grumbling the students obliged. When all the DA members were situated around the enclosure. "To be quite blunt the final battle is drawing nearer and we all need to be ready. I am about as ready as I can be but you are not. On the ice," Hermione froze the large portion of the lake that was in the enclosure, "You will learn balance which is more important than you think. I will teach you hand to hand combat in case you get disarmed. Over the fires everyone who isn't working with me will work on brewing blood replenishing potions and pepperup potions. We start tonight. I will be getting you up at random times. You need to be able to be ready at a moments notice. Now I know Harry was originally the teacher in this class but he is no longer the one that can help you the most (no offense Harry.)"
"None taken."
"Are you going to teach us how to do stuff with the elements?" One person asked.
"No. Only an elf or their mate can manipulate the elements and even the mates aren't quite as competant."
"Why didn't you tell everyone about you earlier?" another person asked.
"Because no one was ever supposed to know. I was only supposed to tell people whom I trusted with every part of my heart. Go now and come back at eight o'clock tonight."
Hermione began to teach everyone in the DA everything of what she knew that she could. None of them could even come close to competing with her but she always assured them that they would do fine against any other foe.
Those who worked on potions quickly amassed a large amount of potions enough to supply everyone on the side of the light with at least three viles of each potion. This would be enormously helpful for it meant that their soldiers would be able to renew their energy and replenish their blood.
By the end of the week Hermione was exhausted (in a mental sense) She lay on the couch in the heads’ common room staring at the ceiling. Suddenly the door slammed. It was Draco. He had just come back from dealing with a small duel between two students on the fifth floor. His head was bleeding and Hermione quickly got up to deal with it. She placed her hand lightly over the wound. Draco leaned into her touch. When she pulled her hand away there was no more blood and the wound was healed.
“I’m so frustrated Mya. Things are happening so fast and we are both so busy with training the other students to fight. I need a break.” Hermione took his hand.
“Come on.” She tugged his hand.
"Mya it's the middle of the night."
"So?" She said cheekily and she led him out of the rooms, through the castle, and out onto the grounds. She guided him under the shade of a tree that spread over a part of the lake and lifted a portion of earth out of the lake some distance from the shore. Draco had become good enough at controlling the elements that he could follow her across the water to her little platform. Hermione kindled a tiny flame in the middle of the platform.
“I know just what I can do to help you relax.” Hermione said. With a wave of her hand she was clad in a flowing silver skirt and a tight black sleeveless shirt that showed a good bit of her stomach. Her feet were bare and in her hands was her Varya. She plucked a few strings and began to play a song. It was light and smooth and filled Draco with happiness. Though she played the music softly it seemed to spread far beyond their small pool of light. Hermione enchanted the Varya to continue playing her song and began to dance and sing in the elven language.
Up in his tower Dumbledore had watched the two teens and when Hermione began to play he discreetly pointed a finger at them and twirled it in a strange motion. Now every magical being on the planet would hear her whether awake or asleep.
When Hermione finished singing she noticed that Draco's eyelids were drooping. He did not often get tired and only had to sleep every few days. Another side effect of being mated to an elf. She bent over and lifted him. She walked out onto the lake and let her platform dissappear. When she reached the edge of the water the ball of light that had followed them illuminated the crowd of students on the bank who had been sitting and watching them. Hermione dropped Draco into the water in her shock and he came back to full awareness spluttering.
"Mya what-?" There was now a slight breeze which turned into a strong wind which whipped Hermione's hair about. Her eyes were blazing.
"What are you all doing here? How did you even know I was out here?" She said in a dangerous voice. She said it softly but somehow it was louder than if she had screamed it at them.
"We heard your music." A little girl volenteered.
"It wasn't loud enough to hear way out here now tell me truthfully why are you here?"
"It's true. Everyone heard. It was clear. Just like you were next to me. Probably a spell to magnify sound." Said the terrified girl. The wind dropped and the air was still but Hermione's eyes flashed even brighter than before.
"Dumbledore."
Dumbledore heard his name even up in his office and cringed. He cringed again when the young woman who said it appeared in front of him. Another incident to ad to his record of not thinking of the near future.
"Why Dumbledore? That was a private moment I was sharing with Draco. You had no right to share it with everyone." She felt something like a worm, something forgein trying to enter her mind with soothing thoughts. "If you want to say something professor then say it. Don't go where you aren't wanted!" With these last few words she drew the tendril of thought into her mind and shot it back out giving the headmaster a monster headache. Rubbing his temples Dumbledore answered.
"I thought that everyone in the wizarding world had the right to hear something so beautiful in these dark times." Hermione stumbled back and nearly fell over. She would have if Draco hadn't run in at that very moment and caught her.
"Every magical being heard that?" Hermione said. Her voice was full of both anger and incredulity.
"Er...yes every magical being heard that." Dumbledore said deciding it was probably best to be honest. Hermione's magic flowed off her in waves so that she seemed to shimmer. Draco took her hand and poured comforting thoughts into her.
*Calm down love. Lets leave him here to think over what he is done and what the result was. Come on.* He tugged her hand. Hermione gave the headmaster a rude gesture that her old self would never have imagined giving to anyone, and followed Draco out of the room.
They scraped it off.
