For Good

A/N: YAY!! This is my favorite chapter!!!!! I am the most proud of this one.

---
Then end of term passed in a flurry of owls, inquiries, and sleepless nights.

Nothing would ever be the same again. He had heard the phrase before and now he knew what it meant. The numbness he had felt was finally gone, now was only the pain. Pain that he had let Cedric die, pain that he had helped the Dark Lord to rise again.

They met on the Hogwarts Express, outside of an empty compartment.

“Draco.” Harry said in surprise, as the other boy advanced on him in the train’s narrow corridor.
“Harry. I...” Draco ran his hand through shoulder length blond hair nervously. “...can we talk?”
He gestured to the empty compartment. Harry nodded, they entered and sat next to each other on the bench.
Draco smiled softly at Harry.

“I’m limited. Just look at me. I’m limited. And just look at you, you can do all I couldn’t do, Harry. So now its up to you...for the both of us...now its up to you.”
He cupped Harry’s cheek in one small, pale hand, still smiling softly. Harry covered Draco’s hand with his own larger, tanned one.
“I’ve heard it said,” Harry began, “that people come into our lives for a reason. Bringing something we can learn. And we are lead, to those who help us most to grow, if we let them. And if we help them in return. Well I don’t know if all that is true, but I know I’m who I am today because I knew you.”

Draco dropped his hand and his eyes. But Harry had seen the tears forming there. Harry gripped Draco’s chin, and brought his eyes back up to meet his own. He continued.

“Like a comet pulled from orbit, as it passes the sun. Like a stream that meets a boulder halfway through the woods. Who can say if I’ve been changed for the better, but...” Harry said this as earnestly as he could. “...because I knew you. I have been changed for good.”

Draco pulled away and wiped furiously at his tears, but didn’t look away again. “It well may be that we may never meet again, in this lifetime. So let me say before we part, so much of me is made of what I learned from you. You’ll be with me, like a handprint on my heart. And whatever way our stories end. I know you have rewritten mine, by being my friend! Like a ship blown from its moorings, by a wind off the sea. Like a seed dropped by a sky bird, in a distant wood. Who can say if I’ve been changed for the better? But, because I knew you...”
“Because I knew you.”
“...I have been changed for good.”

Draco gripped Harry’s hands imploringly.
“And just to clear the air. I ask forgiveness for the things I’ve done...you blame me for.”
“But then,” Harry said with a grin, “I guess there’s blame to share.”

“And none of it seems to matter anymore!”

“Like a comet pulled form orbit...”
“Like a ship blown from it’s moorings...”
“...as it passes the sun.”
“...by a wind off the sea.”
“A stream that meets a boulder...”
“Like a seed dropped by a sky bird...”
“...halfway through the wood.”
“...in a distant wood.”

“Who can say,” They sang together, “if I’ve been changed for the better? I do believe I have been changed for the better.”
“And...because I knew you...”
“Because I knew you...”
“Because I knew you, I have been changed for good.”

The song ended, leaving both boys drained and just a bit weepy. Harry pulled out a white hanky and handed it first to Draco.
“You sang the wrong part.” Harry said, laughing a bit hysterically.
Draco blew his nose loudly into the fabric. “What?”
“Oh right, I didn’t tell you. ‘Mione found out why we kept singing all this year.”
“Well, what was it?”
“Ginny miscast a spell and instead of animating a book it animated...well...us. And you had been Galinda and I was Elphaba, but just then you sang Elphaba’s part....and....” Draco looked lost. “you really don’t care do you?”
“Not really.” The blond replied dryly.
This set them both off they laughed until their stomachs hurt. Eventually they wound down enough and Harry was relived when the tears failed to make a comeback. They sat in silence for several long moments.
“You...you understand why I have to do this, don’t you, Harry?” Draco asked in a quiet voice.
“I do. I don’t like it, and I know its not going to work, but yes Draco, I do.”
“You don’t know that Harry!” Draco replied angrily. “Not for sure anyway.”
“I’m going to beat him Draco.” Harry replied in a firm voice. “Good will win over Evil, you’re on the losing side.”
A brief stare down ensued. To which Draco looked away from first.
“I can see that we will never be able to agree on this topic.” He said primly, sitting up straight and folding his hands in his lap, sounding scarily like Narcissa.
“Probably not.” Harry replied sensibly, rolling his eyes at Draco’s tone.
Draco dropped the prissy attitude and looked defeated.
“So this...is goodbye?”
“Uh-huh. But, Draco, I’m glad we could be friends...even for just a little bit.”
“Goodbye...my friend.”
“Goodbye Draco.”
