As he arrived at St Mungo’s he was met with chaos. There were Aurors running about, Healers comforting distraught patients, spell marks on the walls. He made his way through the rabble to a small group of Aurors, huddled around the reception desk. One of the black cloaked Aurors turned to face him. Potter. He tried his best not to look too disgusted.

“Professor Snape, what are you doing here.” Potter looked surprised. Severus raised an eyebrow in his direction. Behind him Weasley snorted and turned away. Apparently it meant nothing that Severus had saved Weasley’s life. At least Potter showed him some respect. Ignoring Weasley, he faced Potter.

“It’s Hermione who’s gone isn’t it?” He asked. Potter nodded his head slowly, pulling his cloak around himself.

“How would you know that, Professor?” Harry asked. Severus put his hand on the young man’s shoulder and led him to a corner.

“She and I were supposed to meet for dinner. I know who has her, and I have an idea where. For her sake, I suggest we hurry. Lucius Malfoy and his idiot son are not to be underestimated.” Harry’s eyes widened. He turned and beckoned to the group of Aurors.

----

As the group apparated at the gates of Malfoy Manor it was clear that something was amiss. Lights glimmered at the windows of the place. It was supposed to be deserted, and Ministry Wizards were supposed to have warded it. Severus snorted at the thought. If you want something doing properly, do it yourself, that cynical old muggle proverb snaked it’s way through his mind.

The group of Aurors started forward, but Severus held out a hand to stop them.

“Stay where you are!” he hissed at the ministry’s best. “I know Malfoy, this will NOT be easy.”

Severus inched forwards, his wand at the ready. Quietly, he muttered an incantation,

“Aperio.”

----

Lucius Malfoy was drawing back his wand, ready to strike Hermione with the cruciatus curse for the third time when he felt his wards tremble. They weren’t broken, but there was something not right. He left the cell and stormed up the stairs, looking for his son.

“DRACO!” he bellowed. The boy ran up behind him, wand drawn. Lucius turned to face him. “You felt it too?” The boy nodded and jerked his head towards the back yard.

Father and son stepped out of the door, wands ready, all alertness.

Darkness faced them.

----

Severus cast the spell he had learned long ago when he had first started spying for the order to reveal where Lucius’ wards and traps were. Looking down the path across the front door he saw the eerie glow of Lucius and Draco’s revealed wards. There didn’t seem to be a path straight through, or even round the sides. The house seemed completely protected.

He pulled himself quickly back behind the wall that hid them from view as someone began to open the door. Lucius and Draco. He pressed himself to the stone of the wall, hoping that they hadn’t seen him.
