Chapter twelve
Draco ushered his father into the living room, “Don’t you rush me boy.” Lucius scolded.
“Sorry Father.” Draco muttered.
Lucius caught the eye of a young brunette witch. Lucius smiled, almost looking happy.
“Congratulations son. Finally gotten over Pansy to be with a real woman? I must say, she is rather familiar but also very beautiful.” Lucius winked at Hermione who blushed a crimson red.
“Uh, father…” Draco tried.
“Not now, Draco. I think you should give this young girl a tour.” Lucius said, turning on his heel.
“She’s not my girlfriend!” Draco cried in desperation.
Lucius stopped, “Who is she then?” he asked curiously turning to his son.
“Hermione Granger…” Draco mumbled.
“Didn’t I teach you not to talk under your breath?” Lucius warned.
“Hermione Granger! She’s the Head Girl! The Erinnyes!” Draco exploded, falling onto the couch.
Lucius’ eyes turned amazingly red like his Dark Lords, “What on earth is she doing here?” he hissed.
“She was gong to kill half of the school! Dumbledore sent me here because she’s…she’s in love with me.” Draco explained, feeling nauseous.
“In love? With a Malfoy? Granger?” Malfoy Snr cursed under his breath.
“Why didn’t you tell me you were dating Jane Granger?” Draco asked, realizing he would regret that later.
Lucius’ face hardened at her name. A look of pain washed over his fathers face, “It wasn’t necessary for you to know.” Lucius whispered.
“Did you love her?” Hermione said after an hour of silence. Her tone had a tinge of hatred and acid in it.
“This conversation is over.” Lucius said, turning on his heel once more.
“Because, if you loved her, you would’ve stayed with her. All the pictures show happiness and love but obviously my mother wasn’t enough for you, am I right? But to get back at you – revenge I like to call it – she married a muggle and you hated her for that. That’s why you hate me, right? And that’s why you still loath and despise me now you find out I’m actually a pureblood…see, I know something none of you know. Especially you Lucius! My mother never married a Muggle! My mother married a former Death Eater who went into hiding, made himself seem like a muggle! It took him years to learn how to live without magic but he did it! For my mother! But, if you had of stayed with her, she would have married someone she actually loved – hell liked!” Hermione outraged, all in one breath.
“It doesn’t matter anymore.” Lucius said in a saddened tone that was damp with desperate pain.
“No, Lucius! It’s never too late to say you are sorry!” she screamed.
He slowly turned toward her, looking at Draco then to Hermione who was in a fit of sobs, glaring at him. He slowly made his way over to her, and stood inches away from her face.
“What am I supposed to do? Apologize again? Yes, I visited her when you were just a baby. To apologize. Do you know what she said? she said, that the time had passed and she’d forgotten the man that I was. So don’t tell me that it’s never too late…because it is.” He whispered in a deadly yet pained tone.
“Then it’s your fault…not hers.” Hermione said, glaring up into his eyes, a mere two inches, at the most, away from his nose.
His eyes traveled over her face, “You’re right…” he sneered sarcastically, turning and leaving the living room.
Draco glared at her, “You couldn’t keep your mouth shut could you?”
“I beg your pardon? You started the topic not me.” She retorted.
“If you’re in love with me Hermione, tell me now.” Draco said, ignoring her.
“What?” she scoffed sarcastically.
“Are you in love with me?” he repeated.
“W-what gave you that impression?” she stuttered.
“Nothing. It’s just a theory.” He muttered.
“Dumbledore, right? That old coot doesn’t know his elbow from his asshole! You, know what? I’m beginning to think that Voldemort has the right idea. At least he’d have the decency to pay attention to me!” Hermione yelled.
Draco stood in shock. And behind the door, was Lucius, also standing in shock. Was Hermione losing her mind or was it this Furie crap? Lucius pondered her statement for a moment, before walking behind his desk and taking a seat.
“You don’t mean that.” Draco hissed.
“And if I do? Like it matters anymore! I won’t be finishing my education, I could possibly kill all of my friends, I almost killed you…my life is ruined-and I’m not saying this out of sympathy for myself. I don’t feel sorry for myself now, nor have I ever…” she explained, throwing herself on the couch.
Draco knew she was right. Everything she had just stated, was correct-as usual. He didn’t know how to go about this, so he sat next to her, putting a comforting arm around her. She didn’t move. When she was that close to him, she felt overwhelmed. Maybe she was in love with him.
“Sorry Father.” Draco muttered.
