Chapter Twelve

EMERGENCY!!!

Harry stormed into the common room and threw himself onto one of the chairs in front of the fireplace. Ignoring all the eyes that had landed on him, he glared into the fire. Stupid Draco! What the hell was his problem? He didn’t know what made him come to the tower instead of going to his own room, but at the moment he was glad for the password requirement.

Thinking back on what had transpired, Harry felt a stab of guilt at what he had said to the blonde outside of the common room.

‘Well it was his own damn fault!’ He reasoned. ‘He was the one being a jerk!’

Despite his reasoning, Harry couldn’t get rid of the guilty feeling welling up in his chest. It didn’t help matters that his mind continued to bring up pictures of Draco as Harry dismissed him, tears clearly visible in the corner of his eyes.

“Hey Harry!”

Harry looked up to see Neville sit across from him. “Hello Neville.” he greeted, offering him a small smile.

“How’re Ron and Hermione?”

“Good, I guess. Dumbledore still doesn’t know what’s going on.”

Neville nodded. “Well, I’m sure he’ll figure it out. So how’s Draco’s arm doing? Did you manage to get all the teeth out okay?”

“Yeah, he’s-

HARRY!

Harry bolted up right as Draco’s panicked voice echoed in his head. “I gotta go.” he shouted over his shoulder to a surprised Neville. Reaching the portrait he shoved it open, almost hitting Seamus as he ran past. “Sorry, Seamus!”

Harry ran down the corridor, his mind going a mile a minute. Something was seriously wrong. He had no idea where Draco was and Hogwarts was a maze of different corridors, with tons of places the blonde could be. Unfortunately, the Marauder’s Map was the last thing on his mind.

The first place that he went was their own common room. Flinging open the door, he was met with an empty room. Moving from room to room, he found each one empty as well.

“Damn it, damn it, damn it.” he shouted, kicking the ottoman. “Where the hell are you, Draco?”

Snape.

Harry’s eyes widened. Draco could possibly have gone there and even if he hadn’t, Snape may know where to find him. Turning around he ran out of the room, just barely remembering to close the portrait behind him.

As he reached the Great Hall, he met up with Ron and Hermione, each coming from different directions, Ron from Care of Magical Creatures and Hermione from Ancient Runes.

“Harry, what’s going on?” Ron called, running to meet him.

“Something’s wrong with Draco.”

“I know.” Hermione replied, coming up behind the two. “I can feel him.”

“Is he okay?” Harry asked, spinning around to face Hermione. “What’s going on?”

“I..” Hermione hissed, clamping her hand over her shoulder. “I don’t know what’s going on. I can only feel him. We have to find him now!”

Harry nodded and continued running toward Snape’s office, Hermione and Ron following behind him.

“Harry, where are you going?” Ron shouted, trying to keep up with him.

“Snape’s office. He’ll know where to find him.”

Ron grimaced at the mention of Snape but didn’t say anything. Together they ran the rest of the way through the dungeons to Snape’s quarters. Without knocking, Harry burst through the door, followed by Ron and Hermione.

“Mr. Potter, I hope you have an extremely good reason for bursting into my room without knocking.” Snape snapped, looking up from the essays that he had been marking.

“Did Draco come back down here?”

Snape eyed him suspiciously. “He went looking for you. Did you not talk to him?”

Harry flushed, and adverted his eyes. “We had an argument, but that isn’t important. We need to find him. Something’s wrong.”

Behind him, Hermione hissed in pain again. This time she was clutching her arm.

“We need to find him NOW!” she shouted, breathing heavily.

At Hermione’s statement, Snape grabbed a small, leather bound book on the corner of his desk and flipped it open. For a moment, he frantically scanned page after page. Finally he stopped, paling slightly at what he saw.

Jumping up, he quickly made his way around the desk and out the door, The small book in his hands. Harry, Ron and Hermione stared after him for a moment before running after him.

“What is it?” Harry asked, catching up with him. “What’s going on?”

Snape ignored him and continued down the corridor. When they reached the end, he turned left and stopped in front of a blank stretch of wall. Harry and the others watched as the professor walked forward and began running his hands along the wall.

“Damn it.” Snape muttered. “Where the hell is it?”

After a moment of running his hand over the wall, he found what he was looking for. To the right of where he stood was a loose brick. When he pushed it in the wall shuddered and slid out of the way, revealing a door. Stepping through the room, he froze in horror.

Seeing Snape stop, Harry stepped around him. “Oh god!” he gasped, fear filling his chest as his eyes roamed over the room. There was blood everywhere. Finally his eyes landed on Draco. The blonde was lying in the far corner, looking even worse then the room did. His clothes were torn and he was covered in blood.

“Oh god, Draco.” Harry cried, moving to his side. With a shaking hand he reached out and felt for a pulse. Beneath his fingers he could just feel a faint pulse. “He’s alive.” Harry sobbed in relief, picking him up and cradling him against his chest.

Turning, he headed toward the door. Hermione stood with her hands covering her mouth and glancing around the room. Snape was staring at Draco, his face paler than normal. Ron, on the other hand, looked slightly sick, but moved to help Harry.

“We have to get him to the hospital wing.” Harry said, trying not to let his tears fall. His vision was blurry as it was, without tears blocking what he could see. He couldn’t risk dropping Draco.

At the mention of the hospital wing, Snape snapped out of his stupor and quickly conjured a stretcher. “Put him on this, Potter.”

“No!” Harry snapped. “I’ll take him.”

“Put him on this stretcher, Potter. Now!” Snape barked. “Need I remind you that we are in the dungeons. There are several sets of stairs leading up to the Hospital wing. I will not take the chance of you dropping my godson.”

Harry glared at the Professor but set Draco down on the stretcher. Once he let go of Draco, the worry and fear building in his chest doubled. There was so much at stake. Not only could he lose Draco, but the baby as well. Then there was the risk of his own life and that of Ron's and Hermione's. They were all connected to each other and they would all suffer if something happened to Draco. Taking Draco’s hand in his, Harry walked beside him as Snape led the stretcher towards the Hospital wing and Madame Pomfrey.

Harry sat beside Draco’s bed, watching as Madame Pomfrey worked with Draco. The blonde was still unconscious but he was no longer bleeding. She had quickly healed all the cuts and injuries on the outside and was currently working on any internal injuries that the blonde may have sustained.

At the sound of the door opening, Harry looked up. Dumbledore smiled gently at him and made his way to his side. “How are you, Harry?”

“Good as I can be, given the circumstances.” Harry sighed, going back to watching the medi-witch work. “Have you discovered who was responsible for this yet?”

Dumbledore sighed. “Professor Snape and I have our suspicions, but they are just that. Suspicions. We currently don’t have enough evidence to accuse anyone. All we can do is wait for Draco to wake up.”

Harry gritted his teeth. He hated not being able to do anything and he hated not knowing who did this. It was like they were getting away with it. They were probably sitting down in the dungeons congratulating themselves on a job well done. He knew it had been a Slytherin. Maybe it was just old prejudices rearing their heads, but he didn’t care. He knew it was a Slytherin and he would make sure that they didn’t get away with it.

“You better find them before I do, Professor.” Harry growled, clenching his hands into fists. “Because if you don’t, there will be family members to contact!”

Dumbledore placed a hand on his shoulder. “I understand how you feel, Harry, but you won’t do Draco or the child any good sitting in Azkaban.”

Harry sighed. “I know. I just want this over with.”

“Albus.”

Both Harry and Dumbledore looked up as Snape interrupted them. “I need to speak with you....privately.”

Harry glared at the man but allowed them to move away to talk. Despite his worry for Draco, he couldn’t help but wonder what the two of them were talking about.

*******

Once they were out of hearing distance from Harry, Snape spoke. “I have a....suspicion as to who is responsible for this.”

Dumbledore raised an eyebrow and examined the man in front of him. “A suspicion?”

“Yes.” Snape nodded. “There was an incident in my class, earlier today. Draco told me that he and his child had been threatened.”

“Why did you not tell me this sooner?”

“I never had the chance to tell you.” Snape snapped, his patience growing thin. “Potter and Draco showed up late to my class and I made them sit apart, Potter with Longbottom and Draco with Parkinson. He almost lost control of his power when she threatened him.”

“What was said?” Dumbledore asked, his brow creased.

“Ms. Parkinson stated that Draco belonged with Voldemort and that his child could be taken care of.”

“I see.” Dumbledore replied. “I must ask you not to inform Mr. Potter of this threat as of yet, Severus. I’m afraid that at the moment he may do something rash.”

Snape snorted. “You're only now beginning to see his flaws?”

“For the moment, there is nothing we can do about Ms. Parkinson” Dumbledore continued, choosing to ignore the comment. “I will inform the staff that they are to keep and extra close eye on her. We’ll have to make sure that nothing further happens.”

“There is one other problem, Albus.”

“What is that?”

“Ms. Parkinson is not stupid.” Snape replied. “Draco let out just enough of his power that she felt it. Sooner or later, she is going to find out about their powers. She’s not a Slytherin for nothing.”

“Well, let us hope that it is later rather than sooner.”

As soon as Madame Pomfrey finished with her testing, Harry was out of his seat and asking questions. He had given up on trying to hear what the professors were discussing. “Is he alright? Is the baby alright? Why isn’t he awake?”

“Calm down, Mr. Potter.” Madame Pomfrey replied, glaring at him. “Mr. Malfoy will be fine. He is not awake because he is regaining his strength. He lost a lot of blood tonight. He won’t be up and around for a couple of days.”

Some of the fear that had built in his chest diminished, but not all of it. “What about the baby” he asked softly, holding his breath.

Madame Pomfrey smiled gently. “Either you and Mr. Malfoy have an exceptionally strong connection to each other or your child is incredibly powerful. There seems to be some sort of magical barrier surrounding the child. When I checked Mr. Malfoy before, there was no barrier. It only recently appeared. The barrier is a combination of both your and Mr. Malfoy’s auras. That is the reason why I cannot tell you if it is a connection between you and Mr. Malfoy or if it is simply the child’s power levels.”

“So they’re both going to be okay?”

“Yes, Mr. Potter.” she laughed. “They are both going to be alright.”

Harry slumped back into the chair, the feeling of relief overwhelming him.

“Are you alright, Mr. Potter?” Pomfrey asked, casting him a worried glance.

“Yeah. I am.” He smiled up at her. “Thank you.”

Nodding, she turned and headed toward Dumbledore and Snape. Placing a light kiss on Draco’s forehead, Harry headed out into the waiting room to find Ron and Hermione. When he entered the waiting room, he found Hermione pacing back and forth, her arms wrapped around herself. Ron was seated in one of the overstuffed armchairs, his face pale.

The moment Hermione caught sight of him, she was firing off question after question. “Is he alright? What’s wrong? Is the baby alright?”

Harry gave her a small smile and nodded. “Madame Pomfrey said they’re going to be fine.”

At the news, Hermione gave a shuddery sigh of relief and burst into tears. “I was afraid that they were going to die. I could feel everything that he was going through.”

Harry pulled her into a hug, rubbing soothing circles on her back. “It’s going to be alright, Herm.” he whispered, looking over her shoulder at Ron. Ron’s face was still pale, but he looked relieved.

“When I saw him, I thought for sure that he was going to lose the baby.” Hermione hiccuped, once she had calmed down a bit. “I hate to sound grotesque but in all honesty, he should have lost the baby. What happened?”

“Madame Pomfrey said that either Draco and I have a really strong connection or the baby is really powerful.” Harry explained. “There some sort of magical barrier made up of both mine and Draco’s magic surrounding the baby. That’s what protected it.”

“Do they know who’s responsible for it?” Ron asked, speaking for the first time since they had arrived.

Harry’s eyes narrowed in anger. “They say they don’t, but I’m positive Snape knows something that he’s not telling us.”

“Do you think he’s told Dumbledore?” Hermione asked.

“I think he was doing it in the infirmary.”

“I wonder if they are going to tell us?” Ron asked, curiously.

“I don’t care if they plan to or not.” Harry replied. “I plan to find out anyway.”
