Draco's Bargain - Part 2

A/N: I do not own any Harry Potter Characters, just my Laurel, her family and anyone you don’t already recognize…Oh and the plot too!

Ch 12 - DRACO’S BARGAIN – Part 2, Narcissa’s Confession

The tension was still thick in the air between father and son, when Wormtail appeared in the doorway of the study and announced with a sneer across his pointy face that the prophecy had been retrieved. He watched as Lucius’ eyes went wide and then his face darkened and contorted angrily.

“Why was I not informed immediately!” Lucius bellowed, jumping up from his desk and reaching Wormtail in two long strides. He grabbed the front of Wormtail’s cloak and dragged him up to his face. “I told you to report to me the minute they went in.” he growled, his hot breath on Wormtail’s cheeks.

Wormtail smacked his hands away and backed up laughing. “Well, well Malfoy, I guess the Dark Lord didn’t see the need to inform you of this, his most important mission!”

“You would dare to speak to me in that tone?” Lucius had his wand out, pointing it threateningly at Wormtail. He had had quite enough of being treated with such insolence this evening. Wormtail cackled again and was about to speak when a soft voice broke their heated glares.

“Lucius, perhaps we should offer your guest some refreshments?” Narcissa inquired, her meek demeanor back in place. Lucius looked at Narcissa, gave a disgusted sigh and lowered his wand.

Wormtail jumped, he’d been so focused on gloating to Lucius that he’d not bothered to take notice of anyone else in the room. He looked into the study now and saw Narcissa sitting on the couch and Draco lounging against the fireplace mantle, smirking. He turned eyes back to Lucius, cautious now. Insulting Malfoy alone was one thing, but in front of others and especially in front of his family was a bad move. Even for someone as dim witted as he, he knew it was a mistake.

“Ohhh, hello Narcissa, Draco.” Wormtail inclined his head in their direction and spoke in a soft voice, eyes cast down at his hands.

“It’s Lady Malfoy to you.” Lucius growled.

“Yes, yes, of course, my apologies, Lady Malfoy.” Wormtail said. He shot a quick glance at Draco and saw the open look of disdain on his face. Draco could not stomach such weakness of character, and Wormtail was the most repulsive display of a weak-minded fool that he’d ever seen.

“Pettigrew will not be staying long enough for refreshments my darling.” Lucius eyes never leaving Wormtail as he spoke, “You’ve come with a missive, is that all to it?” Lucius was still standing very close to Wormtail, towering over him, in fact and Wormtail took an involuntary step back.

“No, uh...Lucius, the Dark Lord wants to see you at once to, er, begin strategizing.” Wormtail looked at him knowingly, “We should leave at once.”

Lucius’ look was grim, he nodded and strode to Narcissa, bent and kissed her gently on the cheek. Draco was again stunned; Narcissa had raised her cheek to him and blushed prettily for Lucius, who smiled a soft smile at her in return.

Draco gave a little shake of his head, he would never understand these two, they both freaked him out. ‘No fucking wonder I’m so god-dammed messed up.’ he thought.

After a few moments they departed together, Lucius giving Draco one final look and reminding him to remember their words, saying he would give the news to the Dark Lord personally.

“Great, just great...” Draco muttered.

As soon as they were gone Narcissa stood and took Draco’s arm and led him wordlessly out to the patio and down into the fragrant coolness of the garden itself. She led him to a secluded arbored bench, trellised with white roses glowing in the moonlight, and sat him down as she sat next to him and looked into his eyes.

“Draco, son, are you alright?” Narcissa reached up stroked his cheek and brushed a strand of golden hair out of his eyes. “You look like an angel in the moonlight, I’ve always thought so, but tonight, you are an angel, my angel.” She spoke softly and looked beseechingly into his eyes.

“Mother, ” Draco’s voice was low and cautious, “you still have not told me what this bargain is that I am bound to do…” Draco was in no mood for his mother’s patronizing words, she had something to tell him, something big and he wished she’d just get it over with.

Narcissa stood and looked down at him, she dreaded telling him what she must, but things were changing fast and he needed to know…needed to understand. “I made a decision for you today Draco, a huge decision that you will not like not having had the choice to make for yourself. I’ll not apologize for it, because I did the right thing. I did the right thing for you…in the long run.” Narcissa turned and began pacing slowly back and forth in front of him, while Draco folded his arms across his chest and looked at her.

“Well, just get it over with Mother. What have you bartered with the devil for?”

“Well Draco, quite literally, your soul.” Narcissa’s gaze was resolute. “I bartered an extra year of your freedom from receiving the Dark Mark and…”

Draco cut her off crying, “But Mother, Lucius said I would not have to receive it until I was 18!” He jumped up from the bench to stand in front of her.

Narcissa shook her head, “Did you not hear anything your father was saying just now? He meant to take you tonight DRACO! I feared he would renege on our bargain, even up until he left with that horrid little man. He was going to have the Dark Mark placed on you this very evening…” She looked at him, “You could see it couldn’t you?” She continued her pacing, “It was only with some…careful discussion and agreement between your father and I that he agreed to withhold this year.”

Draco felt ill again, he’d been feeling ill quite a lot lately…”Damn Malfoy Manor” he muttered under his breath. Oh, how he hated it here! “OK, tell me.”

Narcissa looked at him and then looked away. Her eyes slide closed as she titled her head to the night sky, drinking in the cool breeze across her flushed cheeks. “Give me strength…” she whispered, turned and spoke clearly. “Draco, I bartered a life for your life.”

Draco looked at his mother blankly then lunged at her, grabbing her arms and holding her tight. His voice was panicky, “Mother…please tell me you DID NOT sacrifice your life for mine? You, you wouldn’t do that would you? Because if that’s the deal, then I’ll be gone tonight, I’ll not take the Dark Mark Mother, not for anyone; not tonight, not next year, never. But I won’t let Lucius hurt you either. I’ll seek him out and kill him before that happens.” He shook her harder, “Is that what you did?” he demanded, his eyes wide and stricken searching hers.

“No Draco,” Narcissa’s voice was low, laced with sadness, “that is not what I did.” She could not meet her son’s eyes; “I bartered an innocent’s life for yours. It was their life or yours and I chose you. I made the decision for you to take a life and you are bound to honor it.”

Draco let her go with such force she stumbled backward, taking several steps before regaining her balance.

She trembled and ran to him pleading, “Draco!” she sobbed, “Please, please understand, I did this for you! Your father was going to take your life away this very evening. If you received the Dark Mark you would not be able to survive, Draco! I KNOW YOU! You…you need to be free! You’re strong willed and so very smart! You’re so much stronger than your father ever was; but you’re not cruel and heartless like he is, it’s the only way he’s been able to endure I assure you. I recognize this and did the only thing I could think of to keep you safe for even just one more year. I traded this life for you to take this time to get a plan together, to gain allies…You have a lot to do and you must use this time wisely so at the end of your 17th year you will be able to defeat Lucius and have your entire life ahead of you.”

She was shaking and holding him so tightly his arms hurt. “Think about it Draco! You can be free!! Free of Lucius, you and me! Don’t you see?” she pleaded desperately, “I don’t want you to get the Dark Mark any more than you do. I’ve seen for so very long what your father refuses to see, that you are not his image and likeness. You look like him yes, but that is where your similarities end. You have been under his thumb too long and he knows it. He’s only been able to control you this long because you were young, but Draco, you’re older, a man now and it’s only a matter of time before he completely realizes that you will not ever do his bidding, never bend to the Dark Lord’s will.”

Draco was standing silently, hands clenched at his sides looking very murderous indeed. He had no voice left, he had no air in his lungs left to breathe, he had no words to describe what anguish he was feeling…

“Draco, I’ve been married to Lucius for 20 years now. I was a child at 17, straight out of school when I married him. I had not even turned 18 yet. I had no choice to marry him, it was arranged by him and my family. He wanted me and he got me. He always gets everything he wants Draco, but not this time. I want you to live your life. Live the life that I was unable too. I did not get to be the witch that I was meant to be, did not get to explore the extent of my powers! I did not get to fall in love, go where I chose, see who I chose…Do what I wanted! But you will.” her voice became deadly and calm. “You will.”

She sat down at the bench now, head down, “I did what I had to do Draco...” she looked up at him, here blue eyes clear and fierce, “And so will you.”

A/N: Ohhh! (Shiver) You sooo don’t wanna f-around with Narcissa. LORD ONLY KNOWS what she’d do…Hahaha! Actually, I know what she’ll do, but you still have to wait and see! HEHE! Anyway, I hope this chapter was as fun for you to read (or re-read) as it was for me to write. I know I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again. Since I really started getting readers following the story along so much later, these early chapters were relatively un-reviewed. I’d LOVE to hear your thoughts and feedback. It means the world to me…And besides, you have no excuse…THESE chapters were GOOD better than Ch 10….Although Ch 9 was really good…(Sigh) OK, I’m done. Please review – thanks.
