Chapter 12
Disclaimer: I own none of this...I\'m only writing for my own selfish pleasure...
A/N: Only 5 more chapters my lovlies!!! And to my reviewers:
ladyevilfaerie: I\'m so glad you found my story!!! I thought it would be a cool way to make Snape a little more human than he is in canon.
laceyweasley: I think you\'ll love the Yule Ball. *grins* I tried to come up with some pretty wild rumors, you know how kids in high school are....LOL!
Andrea Malfoy: Thanks for the review! Here\'s your update! ;-)
MoMalfoy: Well, I figured that none of us really have a perfect life, even if it may look like it. =) He might be a seer, but I can\'t say until the very end... *evil grin*
The Yule ball was quickly approaching and Severus was slipping back into his old ways of being. He was curt with everyone. His smile was no longer sincere, but full of malice and sarcasm. Hermione knew he was extremely nervous about the ball, but so was she.
In the days leading up to the occasion, Severus withdrew. He didn’t speak to his co-workers, and only said very little to Hermione. She remembered how things started out like that almost five years ago.
~*~*~*~*Flashback~*~*~*~*~*~
It was the day of Harry’s and Ron’s funerals. The two of them were buried side by side in the Weasley family cemetery. Most of the Order was there, and Hermione was distraught. Between her and Molly, it took almost five people to keep them from collapsing. Snape stood over by himself, in his usual brooding manner, and did not pay any attention to any of the other people there. He did not shed a tear, and he did not rant and rave. Harry was gone. He just kept seeing his lifeless body lying there over and over again. He’d not slept since it happened, and he knew he would not sleep for some time after. Finally, he looked at Hermione. Not only had the girl lost her husband, but she’d lost both of her best friends. Snape felt pity for her. It was not until Dumbledore wrapped his arms around the girl did she cease to sob. Two days after the funerals, she came running up the front steps of the castle. “I have to see Dumbledore!” she screamed.
She ran through the castle looking for the old man. When she found him, she threw her arms around him. “You were right!” she exclaimed.
Severus saw her hug the old wizard, but he did not know what he could have been right about. Later that day, Dumbledore made his way to the dungeons. “Severus, if I may, I’d like to have a word with you.”
Dumbledore ordered Severus to take two weeks off and to mourn for Harry. Of course, Snape scoffed at the idea. He knew that if he did not keep himself busy that he’d go insane. The old wizard told him to get away from the castle and the dungeons for two weeks and gave him a key to a room at the Leaky Cauldron. Severus had no choice. He spent his days in the inn and at twilight would wander the shops in Diagon Alley. One evening, he chanced to meet Hermione.
She looked very different than she had the day of the funeral. When she saw her old potions master, he hugged him, catching him off guard. “Professor Snape, how are you?” she asked.
He simply grunted that he was ok. She pressed him about how he was since Harry was gone. Finally after Hermione bought him two mugs of firewhiskey and several glasses of absinthe, he opened up. He told her about waking in the middle of the night to a cold bed. He also let her know that the nights that he didn’t sleep were far more frequent than those that he did. She felt the same pity for him that he did for her at the funerals. That night, she helped a very drunk Severus Snape to his room. He begged her to stay, but she would not relent. However, she did promise to meet him the next day for lunch.
At the Cauldron the next day, a very sullen and hung over Snape sat with her at lunch. He apologized profusely to her for asking her to stay. Finally, she put her hand over his and said, “After being with Harry as long as you were, it’s only natural to want a warm body next to you at night. I often feel the same. But it would not do either of us any good, especially while we both are still grieving, to start something, or have a one night stand.”
Severus agreed wholeheartedly with her since he was sober. She added in a rather flip manner, “Besides that, how would it look for you to be seen with a young woman who’s pregnant with another man’s child?”
He sat there for a moment, just looking at her. “Huh?”
She smiled sadly. “I…yes, you heard me right. Apparently, I got pregnant around the day of the final battle. Without a father, though, I don’t know if I can keep him.”
Snape was aghast. “Not keep him? Why on earth would you not? Ron is gone now; would you give up his legacy? Would you give up the only part of him you have?”
Hermione started to cry. Snape moved beside her and put his arm around her. “Child, let’s move upstairs.”
He took the young woman to his room and settled her in a comfortable chair. “I don’t think I can care for a baby. I haven’t even finished school to be a healer! I don’t think I can do it. I’m terrified.”
Snape held her for a long time, letting her cry. Finally, he spoke, “Hermione, do you know what I would give to know that Harry had a child? I’d give everything I have in this world. Ron gave you a legacy, his. There will always be a part of Ron with you, now. I don’t have that. Be happy. Rejoice that he lives on. We both only have our memories of Harry. Ron lives.”
She pulled back and looked into his eyes. They were filled to the brim with tears, but he didn’t let them fall. “You miss Harry a lot, don’t you?”
He simply nodded. That exact moment is what set in motion the events that were to take place. Hermione had Ronnie and she started back to work. Severus knew that she worked in the infirmary all day, and he would bring her lunch throughout the week. On the weekends, he would sit with her most of the afternoon. Their friendship solidified.
