Chapter Twelve

Disclaimer: Not mine.

A/N: Once again, sorry for the delay. I\'m trying. Also, I\'m sorry for the formatting, there\'s not a lot I
can do about it at this time. Thanks for all the great reviews, they are much appreciated. Hopefully my
next chapter will be a bit longer.

Scarlet Pain

Chapter Twelve

“Great! Now look what your dear old Potions Master has done.”

“You know Godric, it would be a lot more helpful if you didn’t yell.”

“You two hush up. Really, your acting worse than first years. What we need to do is figure out how to salvage
what we have and come up with another plan.”

“Why do we need a different plan, Rowena? We haven’t really even started on this one, though it does seem
to be looking a bit more difficult than before.”

“How can you possibly still think that Severus is still a good choice, Helga. He may have the qualifications, but
he obviously lacks the understanding needed for this.”

“Now wait. I think Helga has a point. Severus is still the best choice here, even if he is somewhat of a dunderhead.”

“Honestly Salaazar, I still don’t see how you two can think that whatever unstable…understanding was formed
between those two can be salvaged in light of this.”

“I agree with Godric. Maybe we should be looking for a different candidate?”

“Thank you.”

“Wait you two. You haven’t even given this a chance.”

“We don’t have time to run around repairing this damage Helga. It will be a matter of months, maybe less. We
need to go about this logically, and find the quickest course of action.”

“Don’t you get it though? This isn’t a matter of logic Rowena. It’s a matter of heart. Besides, there isn’t anyone
else.”

“What about that Malfoy child?”

“Draco? Don’t be ridiculous. He may be truthful and trustworthy, but his intentions, while not evil, are purely selfish.”

“True.”

There was a slight pause.

“Let’s keep with the current plan. If by the end of the winter holidays there has been no progress we can look
for another candidate. Or at worst, contact that twinkly-eyed meddler in the Headmaster’s office.”

“But that would give us less than a month if it didn’t work.”

“Godric, Rowena. You two need to trust me and Salaazar on this. I swear this will work. And maybe Harry won’t
be the only one healed when this is all over.”

“Oh fine. Until the end of the holidays.”

“Actually Potter, this time I was looking for you.”

“Aw, I’m touched.” Harry gave a cheeky grin and turned back to the tower window. He completely missed
Draco’s look of astonishment at the raven-haired boy’s sudden change of attitude. Not two days ago Harry
would have been wary and even a little skittish. Now he was…acting normal. It didn’t take a genius to figure
that something was off.

“He didn’t mean it you know.” Draco winced, realizing how completely false that must have sounded.

“Yes he did. He always does.” The younger Malfoy didn’t know how to respond. He knew it was true. “Look,
Mal – Draco. Not that I don’t love our little banter sessions, but what do you want? I have a detention to go to.”

“All I’m saying is give him a chance. He needs help to.” It was a risk, being so blunt, even if he did mean it
on some level.

“Very Slytherin Draco. Appealing to my sense of honor and humanity? Please.” Harry’s voice was soft, though
that didn’t hide the biting sarcasm.

“You can’t shut yourself away Potter.”

“No?” Harry raised an eyebrow in a perfect imitation of the Potions Master. “And what about you? Don’t tell me
you’re going all bleeding heart ‘help my fellows’ on me, I won’t believe you.”

“What business is it of yours Potter,” Draco growled defensively. “I don’t care what happens, I just want to live
through this. Preferably intact and without half the world wanting to kill me.”

“You really are a selfish prat, Malfoy, you know that?” But there was no venom behind his words.

“What do you know anyways?” the blonde sighed. “You have no idea what it’s like to be surrounded by people
who pretend to be your friend just because of your name. I don’t think anyone of my ‘friends’ would think
twice about turning on me in a second if they knew where my loyalties lie.” He gave a halfhearted glare at Harry,
his posture more envious than angry. There was a long silence before Harry turned away from the window and
looked at the blonde beside him.

“No, I guess you’re right,” he murmured before changing the subject abruptly. “May I see them?” Draco pulled his
arms back and cradled his wrists defensively.

“Why?”

“I just wanted to see if they were healing well.” And to make sure there weren’t any more. The words were
unspoken, but they both knew they were there.

“They’re fine.” Draco hesitated for a moment. “And no, there aren’t any more. I don’t think I’ve had time to,
even if I’d wanted.”

“That’s good then.”

“Harry – ”

“Don’t Draco. Not yet. We’re on first name basis finally, lets not muck it up with sentimental nonsense that neither
of us will be comfortable with.” The blonde shrugged and grinned at the other boy then. Harry just smiled softly.
“I’ll see yah later then.” Harry left the unusually pensive Slytherin staring out of the tower window. It was time for
his last detention with of the week.
