Hermione threw herself down on the bed and cried and cried. had she she got herself into all this? Eternal marriage, without a proposal, without even so much as an ‘I will’. I mean she loved Severus, of course she did, but this was just way too much, way too soon. If she was really honest with herself she had thought that maybe, if they survived the war, then they might think about marriage… in a few years… when they felt ready for children but….
She was disturbed by a knock at the door.
“Hermione, are you in there?” It was Harry.
She wiped her eyes and went over to the door. Opening it, she found both Harry and Ron waiting outside.
“We were worried when you weren’t in any classes,” said Harry. “Is everything okay?”
“T’s n’s nothing you can do. I need to get myself some more sleep before I’m ready to face any one.”
“Is it to do with Snape?” asked Ron anxiously.
“I really can’t talk at the moment,” she said. “Come back after classes and I’ll see how I feel then.”
“Has…” began Ron
“Ron! I’ve said I don’t want to talk just now. I need a bit of space.”
So saying, she pushed the door closed.
The two concerned boys were left staring at the door.
“Well I suppose we’ll have to come back later,” said Ron.
“Or we could go and see Snape!” said Harry resolutely.
“Is that wise?”
“Do you want to help Hermione or not?”
“but…but….”
“Don’t come if you don’t want to,” said Harry striding off.
Ron followed him of course.
The first place they tried was the lab. Severus was there, looking extremely unkempt. He was wrapped in an old shabby robe and as he looked up Harry thought he looked much worse than Hermione had.
“I am indisposed,” he said quietly. “I wish to be left in peace. Leave now.”
“We’ve just seen Hermione,” said Harry.
“I do not wish to discuss my marriage with you Potter. Leave me alone.”
“Marriage?” said Ron in horror.
Snape closed his eyes.
“She didn’t even own it to her best friends then… Natura Confundere… look it up!”
“Are you all right Professor?” said Harry.
“I am very far from being all right. Leave me alone. I wish to work.”
“Can we take Hermione a message for you?” said Ron.
“Tell her… tell her, when she returns to me, she will be forgiven.”
“What…” began Harry.
“Leave it,” said Ron. “He’s had enough… even I can see that. We’ll give her the message Professor.”
“But…”
“Come on,” insisted Ron, grabbing Harry’s arm and pulling. “It’s Charms next and Potions is cancelled. We can look up Nat… whatever he said… and go and see Hermione again. It’s not fair to badger him. I don’t think he’s hurt her, or if he did, he didn’t mean to.”

Later that afternoon Ron and Harry went to the Library and found whatever they could on Marriage Traditions in wizarding communities. They carried the books over to a table and settled down to their research. It took quite a while for them to find anything as ‘Natura Confundere’ was not a ritual. Finally Harry spotted something.
“Here it is.” He began to read,
“’Natura Confundere, often translated as ‘essential joining’ is a very rare occurrence. It is believed to be the spontaneoergierging of the magical essence of a Witch and a Wizard. All documented cases have been between very powerful spouses and in cases where children have been born after the joining they have had unusual powers. The bond is held to be eternal and indissoluble. If the couple are separated for any length of time their health is adversely affected. This is especially true in the first moon cycle following the initiation of the bond. If the wife dies, the wizard will not be able to mate again. If the husband dies, the witch will die within one moon cycle of his passing. There is no known way of inducing the joining or negating its effects. Since 1345 it has not been recognised as a legally binding form of marriage because it involves neither ceremony nor witnesses so another form of marriage is required in cases where a dispute may arise.’
This is serious stuff Ron.”
“Yeah… If he’s stuck in the dungeons and she’s at the top of Gryffindor tower… it could explain why they both look so rough.”
“She’d been crying. I’ll bet he was being a bastard to make her lock herself away like that. It serves him right if he’s suffering for it.”
“She has to go back though,” said Ron thoughtfully.
“Why doesn’t he go to her?”
“He said he’d forgive her.”
“Him forgive her! What about her forgiving him?”
“Let’s go and see her. She might be able to talk now,” said Ron.
“All right. Let’s go.”
Hermione opened her door all the way this time and let them into the room. She still looked unwell but the tears had stopped.
“How are you ‘Mione?” said Harry.
She looked as though she was going to cry again.
“We went to see Professor Snape. He told us about the Wedding…”
“That’s just it!” she exclaimed. “There wasn’t a Wedding. There was just this blue glow and good sex and then whoops…joined together for all eternity to someone I started dating last Saturday. It isn’t fair! I had no choice in the matter at all. How could I have known that that would happen?”
“We looked it up in the Libra sai said Ron. “It’s a very big deal but the book said it was spontaneous.”
“Professor Dumbledore explained it to me. He said that it’s eternal. He said it might be related to Severus brewing that potion because Merlin had the same type of thing with the woman who gave her blood to him. Ever since Saturday I’ve thought I’d really fallen in love but how much of that was just the magic pushing us together? How do I know if it’s real? I’m never going to be able to want anyone else and he might die soon. I’m really frightened.”
“Hermione,” said Harry. “Did he do anything to you to make you upset? Did he take it out on you in any way?”
“No,” she admitted. “He seemed pleased about it but I freaked out at him and I more or less told him I didn’t want to be bound because he was going to die. He looked so upset I just couldn’t stay. I feel wretched.”
“Hermione, I think you might feel better if you went back to the dungeons,” said Harry. The book said you’d get ill if you were apart for too long at the beginning and he doesn’t look well.”
“He’s not going to want to see me. Not after I was so nasty to him.”
“After all the times you’ve forgiven him? Hermione, he told us he’d forgive you when you went back to him. Come on,” said Ron.
Just then there was a knock at the door. Hermione went he dhe door and opened it. It was Dumbledore.
“I thought you’d want to know,” he said. “Severus has been summoned.”
“Oh my God,” said Hermione. “He can’t go! He’s not well. Can’t he do anything?”
“Short of cutting off his forearm, there’s no way of avoiding it now that Voldmort is so strong. He’s already gone. Try not to get too distressed Miss Granger. He’ll do his best to come back to you. I’ll leave you with Harry and Ron. I’m sure I can trust them to make sure you stay fed.”
“We’ll take care of her Professor,” said Ron.”
“I’ll make sure you’re told when he returns.”
