Rescues and Arguments

My Mate
Chapter 12: Rescues and Arguments

November 21
12:34pm

The body lay in a pool of blood that had begun to congeal. It was
practically mangled beyond description, twisted and lifeless.

Narcissa Malfoy was sprawled on her side, one pale hand resting
almost comfortingly on the tiny house elf’s shoulder even in death. The room
stank with the smell of blood and decaying flesh, making Draco gag.

He rushed to his mother’s side, kneeling to check her pulse. Intense
relief shot through his body like a drug at the faint, slow heartbeat. She was still
alive, but barely. Narcissa had lost a lot of blood from the multiple cuts and gashes
marring her white skin, her thin shift torn in places from where Lucius must have
ripped her clothing off her body.

There was a particularly nasty wound on the left side of her stomach that
could have been made with a knife or dagger. Worried about moving her with it still
open and bleeding, Draco did a simple Sealing Spell to keep her from losing even
more blood.

He didn’t know much about Healing and could only perform the most
basic of spells, therefore Draco was wary about trying to do too much. A wrong spell
could sever an artery and in her condition, it wouldn’t take much to kill her.

After wrapping some of the deeper lesions with the remains of her gown,
Draco reached for the handkerchief in his pocket before remembering the ring.
Narcissa’s wedding ring was deeply enchanted with Dark Magic and rituals that made
it impossible to be removed from her finger. The small piece of jewelry also acted
as a sort of homing device, making it possible for Lucius to locate her no matter
where she was. Only death would loosen it from her finger.

It had taken Draco almost a year of researching to find a way to remove
the ring, and another three months to make the potions and practice it enough to
where he was sure it would work.

He pulled out three small vials transfigured to look like cufflinks, and
carefully poured one perfect drop from each onto the large emerald. As it sizzled
and popped, Draco waved his wand and chanted the counterspell, and watched as it
flashed silver and slowly slipped off her slender ring finger to “clink” on the floor,
the band dulling from gold to bronze.

Gathering his mother into his arms, Draco touched the handkerchief in
his pocket and immediately felt the familiar pull at his navel as the portkey sent
them straight to Hogwarts.

“How could you let him dictate to you like that? He has no authority over
me and I refuse to abide by his mandates!”

“We feel that there his concerns are legitimate, Virginia. There are significant
dangers to you. You of all people should know how dangerous Lucius Malfoy is and I
refuse to allow him the opportunity to hurt you or anyone else involved.” Albus stated
adamantly, his wizened features grim with concern.

“All right! Ok! I admit that maybe some extra security would be beneficial
and maybe even escorts to Hogsmeade, but inside Hogwarts?” Ginny threw up her arms in exasperation. “And is it really necessary to move me to the dungeons?” She stood
in the middle of her rooms watching as professors packed up her belongings.

“Miss Weasley. I believe the Headmaster has clearly stated the concerns,
now if you would be so kind…” Severus shot her a lethal glare. “…cease your incessant
whining and revert back to a competent Hogwarts professor!”

“Oh!” Ginny stomped out of her quarters unwillingly to watch any longer
and helpless to do anything. Unfortunately, Severus followed her, looking dark and
dangerous when she turned on him.

“Weasley, did you not just verbalize the need for an escort? I refuse to
believe that you have forgotten already.”

“I’m in Hogwarts! Lucius can’t get me here. I want to be alone.”

“That’s not possible.”

“Then get me someone else. Have Minerva dog my steps, but not you.”

“That’s too bad, because I have some things to say to you.” Severus
sneered as he grabbed her arm and led her to the dungeons.
They ended up in his living quarters, a place which she had never had the
liberty of seeing before. Severus guarded his privacy with a single-mindedness that
she didn’t understand. The only person she’d ever known to have been in his “lair”
was Dumbledore. Therefore it was with more than a little awe that she viewed her
surroundings.

Predictably, the rooms were done in silver and green, as well as a
dominance of black. Large bookshelves covered entire walls, one dedicated solely
to such tomes as you would find in the Restricted Section. There was a giant fireplace
blazing, which she supposed was necessary to counteract the frigid temperature of the dungeons.

A large fur rug swathed the floor in front of a black leather couch.
Beautiful artwork hung from any bare walls. Severus has good taste, she thought to herself.

It presented a stark contrast to his rather sparse, yet dignified appearance.
The elegant, slightly lavish style didn’t seem to suit him and yet it did. It was
reasonable that a man who had so much pain and bleakness in his life would
layer his residence with the comforts of silk sheets and leather sofas.

“Wine, Virginia? Or perhaps you would prefer coffee with a spot of
Firewhiskey?” The slightly mocking tone in his voice, irritated her to no end and
she retorted, “Coffee and Firewhiskey would be perfect.” Her eyes flashed with
temper at Severus’ smirk.

After he made them up, Snape handed her a steaming mug and took
a seat in a plush chair next to her and raised the cup to his m. G. Ginny stealthily
blew on the dark liquid to cool it off and took a slow sip. And almost choked.
Sucking in a gulp of air, as the concoction burned a fiery trail down her throat,
Ginny glanced into the amused face of her ex-professor.

“A bit strong?” He said.

Ginny chose to ignore the jibe and instead asked a question of her own.
“What’s so important that you had to drag me all the way down here?”

“You need to stop fighting this and resign yourself to the facts.”

“I don’t have to do anything…”

“Draco Malfoy is not the horrible person you imagine him to be and
this is not something he is doing to you on purpose as you seem to like to believe!”

“If this is the only thing you’re going to talk about, then you’ll excuse
me because I’m leaving.” His hand shot out and dragged her back down to the couch.

Jerking her arm away, Ginny glared at him. “I’m bloody tired of Slytherins
manhandling me!”

“Maybe we wouldn’t have to if you’d be sensible, but since you insist on
acting like a lunatic, I can understand where Draco might have some trouble.”

“Oooh! I can’t believe you’re blaming the whole thing on me! He actually
had the gall to call me a whore! And…and, he also cast a Lover’s Loyalty spell on me,
which could have seriously harmed Bradley! And you sit there and tell me that I…I am
the one who has to be sensible?” Ginny fumed, setting her mug down with a s, on, on the
end table.

“Draco Malfoy is a good man, if you would but cease the hysterics and…”

Ginny shot to her feet and headed for the door. “That’s it! I’ve had it!”
She turned back to him and speared him with a look that by rights should have had
him laid out on the floor. “From now on, consider yourself off “Shadow Ginny Duty”
and have Albus send someone else.” Her tone was frigid as an icicle and she whirled
to leave.

Severus cleared his throat. “Before you leave, there is just one thing you
should know…” This time she only turned her head. “…If I were to have had a son,
I would have wanted it to be Draco.” The solemness in his voice made Ginny pause
for just a moment.

For a second, Severus thought she might have softened, but she shot back,
“Then maybe you aren’t the man I thought you were.” Then she was gone.

Damn. He hadn’t handled that well at all. Tact was not in his vocabulary
even when he tried to utilize it, which was next to never. Everything had come out wrong.
He sighed and downed the rest of his coffee in one gulp. What had Draco been thinking?
Calling his future mate a whore? Merlin! Even he knew better than that.

Draco burst through the doors of Hogwarts maneuvering his mother
ahead of him, fingering his medallion that had been enchanted to send a sort
of S.O.S. to Dumbledore. It only took a few moments before professors started
streaming towards him as he headed for the Hospital Wing.

Ginny was already there, dressed in her crisp white nurses uniform.
The look on her face was priceless and if he hadn’t been so distraught about his
mother, he would have taken the time to savor it. Horror liberally streaked across
it as her eyes grew large.

He had thrown an invisibility cloak over Narcissa to make sure none of
the students saw her. Draco wouldn’t take any chances that word would get back to
Lucius that his wife had been seen inside Hogwarts. It was already going to take some
fancy stepping to convince his father that Narcissa was indeed dead, though the ring
would certainly help.

“What are doing here! The three day’s arenp yep yet!” Ginny squeaked
as she backed away.

Draco whipped the cloak away to reveal his mother’s beaten, lacerated
body and Ginny gasped in shock and dismay.

“I’m not here for you…yet.” Draco snarled, shoving past her to where
Poppy stood by a bed. He levitated his mother to the cot and gently lowered her
to the pristine sheets. To his surprise, Ginny pushed her way beside him and bent
over Narcissa. Not even seeming to notice him, his mate went straight to professional
“nurse” mode. Both Poppy and Ginny became brisk and efficient as they worked on
his mother.

Albus hurried in, followed closely by Severus who stopped dead in his tracks
when he got a glimpse of the pale woman covered in blood.

“She’s got a stab wound in her stomach. I used a sealing spell on it.
She’s lost a lot of blood. I don’t know how long she’d been like this.” The two women
were still bustling around, muttering spells and he stepped closer trying to get their
attention. “Her pulse was very weak.” They didn’t look up. “Aren’t you going to check that?”

Ginny looked up, irritated. “Look, just go sit down over there, ok?
We know what we’re doing and you’re getting in the way.”

“She’s my mother and I…”

“Mister Malfoy! I understand your ctanctance, but I must insist that
you sit down over by the Headmaster and Professor Snape.” Madam Pompfrey
stated in a no-nonsense voice.

Grudgingly Draco complied, though he muttered something under his
breath about strict old battleaxes. Either Poppy graciously pretended she didn’t hear it,
or she was too caught up in determining the extent of Narcissa’s wounds.

Albus laid a reassuring hand on Draco’s shoulder, Snape still not budging
from where he had stopped.

Ten tense minutes ticked by before Madam Pompfrey announced Narcissa
to be in stable condition. A collective sigh of relief echoed about the room, Draco’s
white face gaining a hint of color. Severus’ shoulders relaxed just a bit, and Albus
patted him on the back.

“What happened to her?” The Potion’s Master looked at Draco, his ebony
eyes hard as flint and his jaw so tight, it might have cracked.

“Lucius, that’s what. From the looks of everything it must have happened
sometime last night. There was a dead house elf at her feet. I don’t know if she
interfered with him while he was beating it and he snapped, or if the house elf tried
to stop him from beating her.” Draco’s eyes glazed as he was lost in thought.

Abruptly he came out of it and said, “Either way, it escalated to the point of him almost
killing her. That’s never, ever happened before. He was always very careful not to
permanently scar her in anyway.” Sarcasm dripped from his voice.

Severus walked over to the bed, almost hesitantly Draco thought, but when had
Snape ever been hesitant? He stared down at Narcissa’s face, now clean from blood,
his jaw ticking, whether from rage at Lucius, or some other unknown reason, Draco
couldn’t tell.

“I have to go back and cover my tracks, and make up a story for Lucius before he
gets back from his office. The improbability of anyone being able to get the ring
off her finger should help. Activate my token if she gets worse.”

Ginny watched as he turned to walk away, but paused, and came around again,
this time over to her. He stared intently into her eyes and any words that she
might have wanted to say, were stuck in her throat. His hand came out of nowhere,
clamping around the back of her neck and dragging her face to his.

Hard, demanding lips, bruised her own and his tongue snuck into her mouth when
she gasped.

Hot.

Spicy.

Silky.

Another arm came about her back and pulled her flush against him and locked her there.
She couldn’t think, breathe, couldn’t even make a sound. The world slowed to a crawl,
then speeded up until it was spinning so fast she couldn’t gain her equilibrium.
It was over so suddenly that she might have imagined it, if not for the shocked
and surprised faces in the background. And the pulsing, swollen feeling of her lips.

“I’ll stie bae back in…” Draco checked the time. “…two days, four hours and thirty minutes,
for you.” With that authoritarian statement, the man she was trying so hard to despise,
vanished in a swirl of black.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~**********************~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Well there it is. I realize that there’s not a lot of D/G action yet again, but I have to set the scene. Upcoming will be the Invasion of the Weasleys, (which I am not looking forward to writing due to all of the interruptions they will be making) a Severus/Narcissa moment for all you people who have been hoping, and hopefully a nice D/G scene.
Now for the bad news, my grandfather is coming to visit tomorrow, my mom is finishing her last week of teaching, my brother is graduating on Friday, and my aunt is also coming out for his open house on Saturday. Needless to say, this week is going to be just a little hectic. =) I’m hoping to get some work done on it, but I won’t guarantee anything.
Also, “The Lion and the Veela” has just debuted with Chapter 1. Please, everyone, read it and let me know what you think. “My Mate” will still come first as far as updates, but I do want to try to do both at the same time.
Oh I had some questions about the whole “Ginevra” thing so I’ll explain. I was informed that JKR had said that Ginny’s real name is “Ginevra” on her Official Website, which is www.jkrowling.co.uk in case anyone wants to check it out. I just did today. Now. I have no intentions of changing Ginny’s name in this fic. I happen to like Virginia and the way I think it sounds coming out of Draco’s mouth, and I don’t want to go back through. For the sake of the story, it will stay, but I am aware of it.
Please let me know if this chapter makes sense or if you have any suggestions. Especially for the Severus/Ginny scene. I’m not sure how I feel about it. Your thoughts are appreciated! Everyone has been wonderful!
FYI: This story will serve as the first for a series in my own little AU universe. Some of the characters that will eventually be featured are as follows: Simeon Black, Blaise Zabini, Marcus Flint, Charlie Weasley, Katie Bell, Pansy Parkinson (possibly), Ron, Hermione, Remus, and Sirius (he’s alive in my universe), as well as a few of my own characters.
Also in the next chapter, a new character will be debuting, who will have a major part in future stories. Hopefully you all enjoyed this chapter and if anyone wants to be notified when the next chapter comes up, just e-mail me and let me know.
Cheers to everyone and a special thanks to Dracomio and Captain Pirate Jack Sparrow for their input and help! (I hope I spelled them both right) =)
Thanks a bunch!
