Things take a turn for the worse

***Yes it is true!!! I am back from what appeared to be a permanent vacation. Long story…but the most important thing is that there is a new chapter up!***

Hermione sat in relatively private corner of the café. Drumming her fingers against the roughly hewn wooden table she looked up just in time to see a familiar blonde head shuffling towards her.

“Draco…Ouch!” Hermione looked down to see she had inadvertently pressed her hand down on a…dear lord…rusty nail on the table. Draco, who had moments before been shuffling rather unenthusiastically towards the table, rushed over to see what was the matter.

“Well it appears there was inspiration behind the name of the café.” Hermione commented dryly as she examined the cut. It wasn’t very wide but it seemed to have gone deep. She quickly pulled out her wand and tapped her hand with ease. The cut disappeared although a faint white line lingered. Directing her attention back to Draco who was staring at her hand as though it was the answer to all life’s mysteries, she snapped her fingers. Draco shuddered but drew his eyes away from her hand up to her face.

“I’m sorry I missed our date-“ Draco began.

“Well, you should be mister. Do you know how hard it was for me to get out of work. And now Harry thinks I owe him a favour…as if! I’ve done enough for him already, like that time when he accidently turned into a toad- which if you ask me isn’t to far away from reality- and then there was that nasty boil incident but anyways-” Hermione stopped as Draco laid a hand across her mouth.

“Darling, you talk entirely too much.” Draco said with a smile that didn’t seem to reach his eyes. Hermione hesitated and then drew his head up to meet her eyes.

“What’s wrong?”

“How do you know something is wrong?” asked Draco mock indignantly. “I don’t only come to you with trouble you know.”

“I know sweety, but trouble has a habit of coming to you.” Hermione laughed.

“Well, I don’t know how to start really.” Draco said averting his eyes from Hermione, “I went to see my father today and-”

“Don’t tell me, he lectured you on staying away from Mudbloods like me?” Hermione said but this time there was no laughter in her voice.

“Oh Hermione, you know that…” he trailed off unable to think of a way to reassure her, and unable to determine if he should even bother.
“And exactly what is it that I know Draco?” Hermione asked her eyes flashing, “Do I know that your family is thrilled that we are seeing each other, do I know that there is a ring on my finger yet? Do I know that we even have a solid future ahead of us that isn’t dependant on your father’s mood?”

Draco dropped his head and felt his shoulders slump. The mood of the conversation had definitely changed and he didn’t have the heart to tell her what he had come to say. Hermione saw the change in him and softened slightly but not enough to let the issue go.

“When exactly is it Draco that we will be able to be together as husband and wife?” She asked gently.

“You know I want to persuade my father first Hermione. I don’t want some shotgun wedding. I want our wedding to be meaningful and beautiful.” Draco replied wearily. Hermione recoiled as though she had been slapped. She stood up and looked down at the man she loved.

“I thought Draco, that any wedding that had you and me would be meaningful and beautiful but I guess I was wrong. Call me when you have some actual news for me.” And with that she spun on her heel and walked out of the café and managed to walk two blocks before she allowed herself to cry.

She loved Draco so much, and she didn’t want to push him. But sometimes she got so angry with him she said things that she didn’t mean at all. And usually, she reflected, she said those things after the topic of his father had been brought up. Well, she thought straightening up her shoulders and wiping away the tears, maybe not today, but eventually Draco would have to make the decision of what was more important to him- his father’s approval or Hermione’s love.

Draco sat numb at the café table, wondering exactly how the conversation had taken such a side turn. Now he had to make up to her- and then tell her that his father had impregnated one of her best friends? Ooops sorry darling, I promise it won’t happen again.

Draco laughed bitterly, and put his head down on the table.

Life was getting a little too complicated.
