In the Eyes of the Enemy- Chapter Twelve Release

As the snow began to fall outside and weeks flew by Draco found himself more and more restless about his and Hermione’s situation. Since the night she woke after the attack she had stopped him every time he tried to get close to her. The two had formed a friendship that was better then her ignoring him altogether as she had when her and Potter had been pretending to date. He wanted more though, no matter what he tried he always felt like someone on the outside looking in. Potter, and the Weasleys, even Longbottom she had time for. He would watch her laugh, smile, hug, and even occasionally kiss them. For Draco though she only discussed plans for the ball, Heads duties, and classes. If he tried to hold her she would get up and move, on the few occasions he had dared to kiss her she would always reply, “it isn’t meant to be.” And with tear filled eyes she’s always run away.

As Christmas came most of the school had chosen to stay in order to attend the ball. Ron had asked Padma to go with him again promising profusely, he would be an attentive date or face severe hexing. Harry and Ginny were of coarse going together. The big surprise had been Neville and Lavender who had unknown to anyone started dating after the trip to London. Hermione had been asked by Dean, Seamus, Anthony, and a dozen times by Draco but had refused saying that the ball reminded her too much of the night she was attacked and just couldn’t bear to go.

On Christmas morning Hermione made her way to the Gryffindor to share the morning unwrapping gifts with her friends. She received a new sweater from Mrs. Weasley and books and chocolate from Ron and Harry. When Ginny handed her a gift she told Hermione not to open until she was alone. Judging by the size the boys guessed it was a book; maybe one of the racy romance novels all the girls seemed to be giggling about but hid when any boys entered the room. Hermione gave Harry and Ron each the same book ‘So you want to be an Auror, how to ace the entrance exam.’ For Ginny she had gotten a silk nightgown but asked her not to open the box until she was also alone. The morning had been full of laughter and fun but Hermione was tired, as she seemed to be often lately, and headed back to her room for a nap.

Draco was waiting on the couch; where he had spent most of the morning waiting for her to return from her friends. As she entered the room she smiled at him and said “Merry Christmas Draco.”

He held out a small wrapped box with a bow on it and replied, “Merry Christmas Hermione, I have present I wanted to give you.”

Hermione quickly said “Just wait let me get yours from my room, I’ll be right back”

Hermione dashed inside her room and set down her pile of gifts before grabbing the gift on the dresser. She took a seat next to Draco on the couch and they exchanged gifts. He watched her open his first, inside the box was soft flexible golden band etched with tiny arrows along its length.

Draco lifted her leg into his lap and removed her shoe and sock. He then took the anklet from the box and placed it on her foot as he explained “the anklet it charmed to tell me exactly which direction your in so that I won’t lose you again.” He then showed Hermione the bracelet he was wearing that contained a compass that pointed directly at her.

Hermione started to say, “Draco I can’t, it’s not right”

Draco stopped her by saying “Hermione that was the worst night of my life and maybe if I had known where you were I could have stopped them.”

The sadness in his eyes told her it was important that she not refuse his gift, so she simply placed her sock back on over it and her shoe before saying “Thank you.” Draco smiled and reached down to pick up the gift she’d given him and inside the wrapping she found a book of plays from a muggle writer named William Shakespeare. He watched as Hermione turned the pages to a play called ‘Romeo and Juliet’ and recited from the book:

My only love sprung from my only hate!
Too early seen unknown, and known too late!
Prodigious birth of love it is to me,
that I must love a loathed enemy.

Draco asked, “What does that mean Hermione?”

He looked at Hermione for answer but she only said, “I love you Draco but that won’t change who we are. Read the story and maybe you’ll understand.” Without another word she left for her room and curled up in her bed for some much needed sleep.

Draco was utterly baffled Hermione had said she loved him but that it wouldn’t change who they were. She had said something about love and hate, and he had the distinct impression she thought of him as the enemy. He looked down at the book before him and began to read about this Romeo and Juliet.

Hermione awoke to Draco bursting in her room, saying, “Their not us Hermione. At least she tried to be with him, you just keep pushing me away.”

Hermione trembled as she shouted, “it didn’t work, and in the end they died Draco.”

The anger in him was mounting as he yelled, “at least they were together in the end. Even they knew they couldn’t bear to be apart.”

Hermione had nothing to say and before she could think of something else to say his arms were around her and his lips pressing down on hers. As kiss ended he said, “Tell me you don’t love me Hermione and I’ll leave you alone forever.”

She shook her head and with tears in her eyes said, “I can’t.” Draco kissed her again and this time Hermione relaxed into his embrace. Her fingers reached inside his robes and pulled him on top of her. He didn’t hesitate and quickly began kissing her neck while unbuttoning her shirt.

She quickly removed his robes and shirt while he removed hers. He skillfully removed her bra and began gently suckling her breasts. The sensation was even stronger than she remembered; she started to moan as the feeling of his tongue on her nipples became almost unbearable. His hand found it’s way to her panties and in an instant them and her skirt were gone. His hand was teasing her as his kisses moved down her body.
Her hips had widen from the last time her saw her naked and he guessed she may have put on a few pounds, but it suited her. She looked amazingly beautiful on the bed beneath him wriggling away from his tormenting fingers and soft kisses. He helped her remove his pants, which were becoming to confining for him to remain in any longer. As he entered her, everything felt right in his world once more. He was with the woman he loved and as much as she fought it she loved him too. As he kissed her neck again he whispered, “I love you Hermione.”

As her back arched and spasms passed though her body she moaned “I love you Draco” her spasms and admission of love pulled him with her as they released their orgasms together.

Over the coarse of the next six days Hermione and Draco were content in their quarters, leaving only for meals. Few noticed their absences around the castle; as everyone was busy visiting Hogsmeade for butterbeer and last minute dress robes. The Head Boy and Girl spent the majority of their time making love or cuddling together while Hermione read through her pile of new books. Ginnys gift had been a book called ‘So you’re going to have a little witch or wizard: everything new mothers need to know.’

She had quickly hidden the book in her dresser while Draco went to change. Over the last couple of days though she had been considering leaving it laying around for him to find as a way of explaining her current condition. She had instead decided to wait until the New Year before turning their world upside down. For the moment she was enjoying being together. She had her doubts though I if they would still be after she told him.

Draco was glad that there was a break from classes and everyone was too busy to realize he had been monopolizing her time. As the new year approached he recalled his father saying he had until then to complete his plan, but as far as he was concerned the plan was defunct and there would be no kidnapping of Hermione or ransoming Potter in exchange for her life. He had no intention of joining Voldemort’s ranks as a Death Eater; he instead entrentrated on how he would tell his family he was in love with Hermione.

On the night of the ball, following dinner, the tables were cleared and the prefects and faculty set to work decorating. Hermione oversaw all the details being carried out to ensure everything went according to the plan. Once the last decoration was in place everyone dashed off to get dressed but Hermione took a moment to take it all in. The ceiling looked like the night sky as if often did but was charmed to shower everyone in confetti at the stroke of midnight, the walls had been covered in ivy to give everyone the distinct feeling that they were standing in a garden. Potted bushes and trees were all around the room and aside from the dance floor the ground was covered in grass. The tabletops had a layer of grass on them as well and each held a bouquet of flowers sprouting in the center of the table. The doorway and bandstand had been transformed into magnificent marble arches twined with roses and ivy. Hermione took one last look around the room and smiled as she whispered into the darkness “It’s perfect.”

As Hermione entered her common room she was a bit surprised to find it empty. Draco had left with the other prefects to get ready for the ball as at least one if not both the Heads were expected to attend. Hermione figured it would give her a good chance to read the book Ginny gave her and when he returned to see her reading it, she would tell him the truth.

When she entered her room she was shocked to see shimmering silver robes hanging on her closet with shoes to match. The robes were so spectacular she wasn’t sure she even dared to touch them. She noticed there was a card pinned to the garment and removed it. The note read:

Please Reconsider

It was unsigned but as she turned it over she smiled as she read:

Your Head Boy

Hermione decided to enjoy the night after all. Since her New Years resolution was to tell him about the baby she knew it might be their last moments together as a couple, and she wanted them to be memorable.

She quickly bathed and set to work on her hair and make-up. She had decided to put her hair up with only one curl hanging down on each side of her face. Amongst the curls she had transfigured pieces of parchment into silver butterflies and charmed them to hold the curls in place while gently flapping their wings.

The robes fit her like a glove, and as she looked the mirror she smiled.

As she stepped out of her room, Draco found she took his breath away. The shop in Paris had done a wonderful job with her robes and he was glad to see she had changed her mind and decided to come.

Hermione noticed his robes were black but trimmed in the same silver design as her robes. She smiled at how handsome he looked and asked, “How do I look?”

Draco circled her and grinned as he said, “You look alright but something’s missing.”

Hermione quickly looked at her robes and asked “What?”

Draco stepped behind her and placed the butterfly necklace around her neck. He stepped back in front of her to look at his handy work and smiled “There that’s better, now everything is just as it should be.”

Hermione’s eyes lit up as she saw the necklace and said, “I thought I lost it that night, oh Draco how did you manage to get it back.”

Draco laughed, “now that is a Malfoy secret and we Malfoy’s never reveal our secrets. So shall go to the ball there is a certain beautiful lady whose dances I intend to monopolize.”

Hermione smiled as she replied, “Oh yes and who would this luck lady be?”

Draco placed his arm around her waist and led her down the hall as he said “You dear, Only You.”

The ball was in full swing as they arrived, but as they entered the hall all eyes had turned to look at them. Some were stunned to see them together, some were noticing how incredible tach ach looked, and couple knowing pairs of eyes were just happy they were finally together. Dumbledore was the first to greet them as they entered as he asked “Young Mister Malfoy would you do an old man the honor of having the first dance of the night with the most beautiful women in the room?”

Draco begrudgingly allowed Hermione to dance with the Headmaster after saying “One dance Sir after that I won’t be letting her out of my site.”

The Headmaster smiled as he replied, “I wouldn’t either Mr. Malfoy.” Hermione and Dumbledore made their way out to the floor and began to dance.

Dumbledore whispered in her ear, “does he know yet.”

Hermione shook her head and replied “I’m planning on telling him tonight after midnight. So if you don’t see me tomorrow you’ll know it didn’t go well.”

He sighed and asked, “Are you sure you want to tell him?”

Hermione nodded and replied “I’ve tried to push him away as hard as I can but he just keeps coming back. I know I shouldn’t after what his father did but I love him and I know he loves me. I’m not giving it up and soon enough he’ll know the truth. I’d rather he heard it from me first. After that it’s his choice if he wants to be with us.”

Dumbledore smiled at his granddaughter and said, “He’s be a fool not to. I can see in his eyes he loves you my dear and that is more than I ever imagined possible from a Malfoy. His father married his mother for power and money never love. Maybe there’s hope for him yet.”

Hermione frowned as she said, “I wish mother and father would see it that way, I don’t have the heart to tell them, but when I do their going to hate me.”

Dumbledore’s eyes twinkled as he said “Remember my dear what they’ve done, they’ve done for love, and it may take time but I’m sure they’ll understand.” The rest of the dance was passed in silence.

Draco was waiting by the Headmasters side the moment the dance finished and quickly stepped into his place. Dumbledore simply said, “Thank you Mr. Malfoy she was a lovely partner.” Draco smiled and true to his word, he monopolized each of Hermione’s dances stopping only for and occasional glass of pumpkin juice.

As the clock counted down to midnight everyone in the room began chanting 10… 9… 8… 7…6… 5… 4… 3… 2…1… Draco and Hermione kissed as confetti fell from the air.

As the crowed yelled Happy New Year Hermione felt a tug behind her bellybutton and was gone. The cheers were broken, as Draco screamed into the empty air “HERMIONE.”
