Chapter 10: Father and Son

~o0o~

\"Harry? Are you okay?\" Ron sounded concerned.

\"I don\'t know yet,\" Harry admitted. \"Depends on what he wrote.\" He strapped the ribbon off and unrolled the parchment.

xxx

Harry,

Voldemort is on my heels. I don\'t know how much longer I can stay here without being detected by his squads. If I have to leave I will let you know.

Lucius

xxx

Harry clamped a hand over his mouth, reading the letter again. \"Shit,\" he finally said.

\"What did he write?\"

\"Voldemort is on his heels.\" Harry pinched his nose, thinking hard. \"I have to go and see Dumbledore. I have to get him out of Voldemort\'s reach.\"

\"Could you please not say his name?\" Ron complained.

\"Get over it, Ron. What is it Hermione always says? Fear of a name only increases the fear of the thing itself?\"

Ron hid his face in the pillows and groaned. It only earned him a chuckle from Harry, who started to dress. \"Don\'t get worried if I don\'t show up for classes, okay?\" Ron mumbled something, but Harry couldn\'t understand it. \"What was that?\"

Ron turned his face. \"I said, what about Malfoy? Aren\'t you supposed to babysit?\"

Harry grabbed his own cushion and swatted Ron over the head. \"Hey! What was that for?\"

\"For the babysitting. I don\'t babysit Malfoy.\"

\"What would you call it, then, what you\'re doing?\"

\"Making sure he isn\'t killed by his own house.\"

\"Babysit.\" Another swat landed on Ron\'s face. \"Oi, I\'m only telling the truth. You know who his father is, Harry, and I\'m sure the old Malfoy\'s taught his offspring some dirty things.\"

\"Maybe he has. But even I couldn\'t deflect all of Slytherin on my own.\"

\"So you admit it?\"

\"Admit what?\"

\"That you are a powerful wizard?\"

Harry groaned. \"I\'m so not having this conversation with you yet again.\" He slipped into his robes and grabbed the letter and the parchment he had received from Dumbledore. \"See you later.\"

Harry ran down to the Common Room and was by no means surprised to find Hermione there, revising and doing homework. \"Good morning, \'Mione.\"

\"\'Morning, Harry. What are you doing up already?\"

He handed her Lucius\' letter. \"I have to do something.\"

She nodded. \"You\'re on your way to Dumbledore, right?\"

\"Yes. I hope he might allow me to go to Hogsmeade today.\"

\"Just be careful, will you? If Voldemort or his minions are out there...\"

Harry smiled. \"I\'ll be okay, \'Mione. I hope I can take Malfoy with me. If we really ran into a bunch of Voldemort\'s sickos we might have a chance.\"

She nodded. He hugged her briefly before he ran to Dumbledore\'s office. He half expected the headmaster to be still asleep, but he hadn\'t expected Professor Snape and Draco Malfoy in the office. \"Sorry,\" he panted. \"Professor Dumbledore... I have to leave... immediately.\"

\"And why is that, Mr Potter?\" Snape sneered.

Harry handed the parchment to Dumbledore and waited. He caught Malfoy\'s eyes and smiled. \"If I have it my way, Draco, you\'ll see your father soon again,\" he thought.

Malfoy only quirked his aristocratic eye-brows before he turned away again.

\"Very well, Harry. You and Mr Malfoy are excused from classes today.\"

\"Headmaster, may I ask what this is all about?\" Snape asked, only managing partially to hide his impatience.

\"You may, Severus. Later.\" He looked at Draco. \"Mr Malfoy, you will accompany Harry to Hogsmeade.\"

Malfoy glanced at his Head of House and nodded. \"Yes, Professor.\"

\"You know what to do, Harry.\"

\"Yes. Don\'t worry, Professor.\" He looked at Malfoy. \"What are you waiting for, Draco? Written invitation?\"

Malfoy smirked. \"If you please, *Harry*...\"

\"Gentlemen, this is not the time to jest,\" Dumbledore chided them. \"On your way! Hurry!\"

They stormed out of the office. \"Get your broom, Draco. Hurry. I\'ll meet you at the main entrance.\"

Draco nodded and ran off into the opposite direction of Harry. Harry himself flew up the staircases to the Gryffindor tower, panting the password to the Pink Lady, only to pass a confused looking Hermione and jump up the stairs to the boys\' dorms. He managed to startle his friends into full awareness, though avoiding any complaints and question in his direction. He snatched his Firebolt from the corner by his bed and jumped out of the window. But he still heard Ron\'s muttered comment about him being absolutely nuts.

\"If you knew what I\'m about to do...\" he thought before he landed elegantly in front of the entrance hall. He pushed the wings open, spotting Draco sitting on the marble stairs. \"\'Bout time, Harry. Can you now tell me what this fuss is all about?\"

\"We don\'t have the time for explanations. Come on.\" He mounted his broom again and kicked off without looking back if Draco followed him. He raced towards Hogsmeade, catching a glimpse of silver-blond now and then next to him. He landed a short distance from the cave.

\"Draco.\" His former archenemy looked at him. \"Do you trust me?\"

The blonde quirked an eye-brow, but nodded. \"Yes, I do. At least, with my life.\"

\"Fair enough. I need you to trust me now, okay?\"

\"Okay.\"

Harry took the lead up the small path to the cave. \"Go into the cave, Draco.\"

\"Why?\"

\"Trust, remember?\"

He nodded curtly before he heaved a deep breath and walked into the cave. Shortly after he had disappeared into the darkness Harry heard him shout: \"Father!\" He smiled as he sat down on a big block of stone. The sun was just rising and illuminating the mists dancing across the floor. Harry thought hard about how he cold possibly persuade Lucius to come to Hogwarts where he would be save. Save and with his son. \"You are such a Gryffindor,\" he told himself. \"Always out to safe someone. No wonder everyone sees a hero in me.\" He grabbed a stick and started to draw circles and other figures into the sand while he waited for something to happen. He didn\'t look up when finally a shadow fell over him.

\"What is this about, Harry?\" Lucius asked. \"Why did you bring Draco here?\"

He looked up at the man and gulped. He had half expected him to be angry, but he wasn\'t. His face was a calm mask, though his grey eyes blazed with love for his son. He stood up and reached into his robes, pulling out the parchment Dumbledore had given him for the elder Malfoy. \"Before you say \'no\' to this, Lucius, think about it. If you\'re not going to do this for yourself. Or for me. Do it for Draco.\"

Lucius skimmed the letter fast, his lips quirking with a smile Harry secretly longed to see on his face again. Only now he noticed that Lucius wore gloves. \"Are you afraid of me?\" he asked in his mind, not daring to voice the question aloud.

\"I have to think about it, Harry.\" He did smile, and a warm feeling spread through Harry\'s body. \"I feel honoured that you\'d come so fast.\"

\"You know I\'m a Gryffindor,\" Harry deadpanned, but it earned him a hearty laugh from the blonde.

\"Yes, you are. But only a Slytherin would bait me with my son. Is there something you\'ke tke to tell me?\"

Harry smirked. \"Perhaps. Not now,\" he added seriously.

Lucius nodded. \"I\'ll let you know.\"

\"Okay.\"

\"Take care of my dragon.\"

Harry smirked, a mischievous glint in his eyes. \"Oh, I will take very good care of your dragon,\" he dared Lucius to take the innuendo laden bait.

Lucius eyes lit with fire. \"I bet you would, but I wouldn\'t recommend it. For both your sakes.\"

Harry bent his head in acknowledgement, having the answer he was looking for.

Draco chose the moment to come out of the cave. \"What\'s going on here, father?\"

\"Harry will explain it to you when you get back to Hogwarts.\" Harry was delightfully surprised when Lucius dropped a kiss onto his son\'s head. \"Go now, my dragon.\"

\"Will I see you again?\"

\"I\'m not sure, Draco. Keep your faith. Keep your pride. And remember: You are a Malfoy. Don\'t bow to anyone.\"

\"Yes, father.\" He looked at Harry. \"Are you coming?\"

\"Give us a moment, Draco, will you?\" Lucius answered instead.

\"Of course.\"

Lucius waited until Draco was out of ear shot before he gazed deeply into Harry\'s eyes. \"I take it as a given that you know what we are to each other?\"

y noy nodded. \"Complements.\"

\"Have you told anyone?\"

\"Hermione, \'cause I didn\'t know what it meant. And I didn\'t need to tell Dumbledore,\" he added with a half-smile, not sure how to react to Lucius.

Lucius closed his eyes briefly, composing himself. \"Tell Draco. He needs to know.\"

\"Why don\'t you tell him yourself? He\'s right over there,\" Harry stated matter of factly.

Lucius sighed. \"You\'re right. I don\'t know why I don\'t want to tell him myself.\"

\"Well?\"

\"I still don\'t want to,\" Lucius smirked.

Harry rolled his eyes. \"If I\'d known that you would chicken out like this I would\'ve never gotten involved with you,\" he teased.

\"Language Mr Potter,\" Lucius teased back. \"Will you tell him?\"

\"I will. I only hope he won\'t kill me for it.\"

\"He won\'t.\" Lucius cupped Harry\'s cheek in his gloved hand. \"Take care, Harry. Await my decision by tonight.\"

Harry nodded and turned to leave Lucius alone and join Draco. \"Let\'s go, Draco.\"

\"What was this about, Harry? Why did you bring me here?\"

\"Let\'s go back to the castle. I will tell you everything once we\'re safe again.\"

Draco frowned, but mounted his broom nonetheless and followed Harry back to the castle. They didn\'t speak on their flight back to the school, but fell into a synchronised flight pattern.

\"I missed flying,\" Draco admitted when they touched back down in front of the oak doors. \"I wished I could do this more often.\"

\"You could, you know?\"

\"What?\"

\"I often go for a fly around the lake. If you want you can join me.\"

\"Won\'t your friends object to your collaborating with the enemy?\"

Harry gazed seriously at Draco. \"I no longer think about you as my enemy, Draco.\"

Draco nodded. \"Now, what is this all about?\"

\"Can we go somewhere more private?\"

Draco smirked. \"Are you hitting on me, Harry?\"

Harry laughed. \"Your father strongly advised against it.\"

Draco sighed in mock frustration. \"Pity. But who am I to defy my father?\"

Harry followed Draco to the sixth floor and to a portrait of a sphinx. \"Atalante.\" The portrait swung open and revealed a spacious room with sofas and armchairs in green and black.

\"Make yourself at home. I\'m changing into something more comfortable.\"

\"Okay.\" Harry looked around while Draco was gone. The place looked nothing like the Slytherimmonmmon room except for the black sofas. A fire warmed the room to a comfortable temperature while the thick and plushy carpet added to the homely atmosphere. \"Nice.\"

Draco came back, frowning at Harry. \"You\'re still standing where I left you.\" Harry made quick work of his cloak and shoes and fell into a big arm chair. \"Better. Do you like some tea?\"

\"Love to.\"

Draco smiled and conjured two mugs of tea, handing one of them to Harry before he folded himself the the folds of another arm chair. \"Talk.\"

Harry sipped from his tea and sat the mug down. \"Where should I start?\"

\"At the beginning?\"

He nodded. \"This won\'t be easy for you, Draco.\"

\"I guessed as much. Get it over with.\"

\"I was there when your mother was killed,\" Harry said quietly, watching Draco pale.

\"What?\" he croaked. \"How?\"

\"The scar binds me to Voldemort. I dream his deeds. Sometimes, it\'s not like a dream. It\'s like I\'m there. Right beside him. Watching. And fucking helpless,\" he spat out. \"I couldn\'t believe what I was witnessing. And I won\'t repeat it to you, Draco.\" He watched the blonde closely. He\'s face was a calm mask, but like his father Draco was unable to mask his eyes from Harry. \"When I read the lies in the Daily Prophet I wrote a note to your father. We met last Saturday in Hogsmeade.\" He took a deep breath. How should he break the news to Draco? \"Your father and I discovered that we are complements to each other. Dumbledore gave me a letter for your father. I assume he wants Lucius out of Voldemort\'s reach just as much as I do. This morning I received an owl from your father, telling me that Voldemort is on his track. Hence the rush.\"

\"Wait, wait. My father and you are complements?\"

\"Yes.\"

Draco stared at Harry. \"Do you know how old my father is?\"

\"Erm... no. But I didn\'t choose to be his complement, you know?\"

\"Yes, I know.\"

Harry grinned. \"You know, I thought you\'d be at my throat by now.\"

Draco laughed. \"I must be mellowing.\"

\"Nope, you just stopped being a git.\"

\"If you hold this up, Potter, I will be at your throat,\" Draco bantered.

\"You wish, Malfoy.\"

They shared a moment of silent peace before Draco spoke again. \"Have you bonded yet?\"

\"No. We only recognised each other.\"

\"You know, I\'m impressed. I didn\'t think you\'d know what a complement is.\"

\"I didn\'t.\" Harry blushed. \"Hermione told me though.\"

Draco raised his eye-brows. \"She knows?\"

\"Yes. But I trust her. She promised not to say a thing.\"

\"Yes, she\'s a Gryffindor,\" Draco drawled.

Harry\'s eyes narrowed. \"I\'m a Gryffindor, too, you know?\" he sneered.

\"No need to get your knickers in a twist, Harry. It\'s just that I see some things more clearly now. You know? Outside the Houses?\"

\"What do you mean?\"

Draco stood up and fetched his school robes. He showed Harry the badge. Instead of the Slytherin snake it showed the coat of arms of Hogwarts. \"I\'m houseless, Harry. I don\'t belong anymore.\"

Harry sat thunderstruck for a moment, before he moved to embrace Draco lightly. \"But you do belong, Draco. To yourself. And to Hogwarts. And to your name. You\'re a Malfoy.\"

\"The world doesn\'t give a damn about my name anymore,\" Draco said angrily. \"My identity was taken away from me.\"

Harry gripped Draco\'s chin with one hand. \"Now, listen to me, Draco. Maybe, the world doesn\'t give a damn about your name anymore. And maybe, a lot of people want to see your father dead rather today than tomorrow. But I know what happened. I know that he didn\'t kill your mother. You shall be proud of your name. Now more teverever. Because your father defied Voldemort.\"

\"You\'re talking like a Slytherin, Harry,\" Draco noted quietly.

\"Because I am. The Sorting Hat wanted to place me there. I asked it not to.\"

\"Why?\"

\"Because you were already in Slytherin. And Ron told me that every wizard who went bad came out of Slytherin. I didn\'t want to become a dark wizard.\"

Draco nodded. \"You know, every magic is dark if used with dark intentions.\"

\"I know. Dumbledore told me something similar.\" He sighed. \"It\'s already lunchtime. Do you want to sneak into the kitchens again or do you want to join me in the Hall?\"

\"What do you mean?\" Draco\'s eyes narrowed.

\"I invite you to sit with me at the Gryffindor table.\"

\"What will your friends say?\"

\"They\'ll deal. Ron will have a fit, but he\'ll come nd.\nd.\"

Draco tried to smile, but failed. \"I\'m sorry, Harry. I don\'t feel like myself right now.\"

\"I understand.\" He let go of the blonde. \"Come on. Let\'s scare them to death and beyond.\"

~o0o~

The silence was deafening when Harry and Draco entered the Great Hall together and made their way to the Gryffindor table. Snape looked like he was ready to kill, which he was Harry mused, but Dumbledore only nodded his approval. Harry and Draco sat down between Neville and Ginny. Only then Harry dared to look at Ron and Hermione. As he had expected, Ron\'s face was red and he looked like he was going to explode. Hermione only frowned slightly, but didn\'t say a thing.

\"Is something wrong?\" Harry asked innocently.

Ron stood up and left the Hall without a word.

\"Perhaps I should just go,\" Draco suggested.

Neville shrugged. \"I--I don\'t mind, Draco.\"

\"Me neither,\" Hermione stated firmly. She took a closer look at Draco\'s robes. \"You\'re houseless.\"

Draco nodded. \"Couldn\'t stay in Slytherin and the Hat didn\'t want to place me anywhere else.\"

She nodded. \"I will go and try to get through Ron\'s thick head.\"

\"Good luck,\" the former Slytherin bantered.

\"Thanks. I will need it.\"

After Hermione had left the Hall, too, the tables began to whisper and to buzz about Draco sitting at the Gryffindor table. Harry tried to smile reassuringly at Draco, but the atmosphere still was rather tense. Harry and Draco finished their meal and left the Hall, again dead silence in their wake.

Outside, Draco started to snicker. \"I think we scared them for life, didn\'t we?\"

Harry\'s face split into a huge grin. \"I suppose. What do you think about some Quidditch practice? Just you and me and the Snitch?\"

Draco beamed. \"Sounds great.\"

\"Let\'s go then.\"

They practically ran up to Draco\'s room to get their brooms. Draco turned to leave again, but Harry had this mischievous glint in his eyes again which made Draco tremble in anticipation. \"What are you up to, Potter?\"

\"Up for a dive, Malfoy,\" he said, jumping out of the window.

Draco yelped and leaned out of the window, only to see Harry rolling through the air with his broom. \"You\'re nuts, Potter!\" he yelled, before he mounted his broom and kicked off from the windowsill.

He caught up with Harry. \"If you have a death wish, Potter, all you had to do was ask,\" he said teasingly.

Harry grinned. He reached into his jeans and produced a Snitch. \"Give me your hand.\"

\"Why?\"

Harry groaned. \"Honestly, Draco. Sometimes, I think Crabbe and Goyle rubbed off on you.\" Draco scowled which made Harry smile. \"Release the Snitch together? Fair chance?\"

\"Oh. Okay.\"

They released the Snitch and were engrossed in the hunt moments later. Harry had always known that Draco was an excellent flier. Now, off the pitch, he could appreciate it. More often than not, they closed their hand around the Snitch simultaneously, letting go seconds later. Only when darkness creeped over the woods, they returned to the castle. Harry pocketed his Snitch away again, grinning sheepishly. \"Nice flying, Draco.\"

\"You too, Harry,\" Draco returned the compliment.

Harry\'s stomach growled. \"Merlin, I\'m starving.\"

\"Great Hall again?\"

\"You bet.\"

\"Good.\"

They entered the castle, but before they could enter the Great Hall they were intercepted by Professor McGonagall. \"Gentlemen, the Headmaster expects you in his office. Now,\" she added when Harry sent a longing glance into the Hall. \"You can eat later.\"

\"Of course, Professor,\" Draco conceded.

Gryffindor\'s Head of House returned to the Hall, while Harry followed Draco up the stairs. \"Let\'s take a shower in my dorms. I feel like a pig.\"

Harry made sure to have a clear line to the portrait before he said. \"You are a pig, Draco,\" and he started to run.

\"You\'re going to pay for this, Potter!\" Draco shouted, but smiling inwardly. He went after Harry, reaching him just when he had opened the portrait and tackled him to ground. He began to tickle him without mercy until Harry lay laughing and coughing beneath him, begging to relent. He let go off Harry who stayed on the floor, panting for breath. \"You are insufferable, Draco,\" he said good-naturedly.

\"Am not.\"

\"Are too.\"

\"Am not.\"

\"Are too.\"

\"Am not, and if you want to take that shower you had better not say another word,\" Draco purred dangerously.

Harry grinned andk thk the proffered hand. \"You first, Malfoy. I don\'t need that long and I don\'t want to get bored while I wait for you.\"

\"Not. Another. Word.\"

~o0o~

Showered and changed, they made their way to Dumbledore\'s office. \"Can you imagine what he wants from us?\"

Harry shrugged. \"Perhaps if we could sway your father to come to Hogwarts or not. Which reminds me. He wanted to let me know by tonight.\"

\"I hope he\'ll take the offer.\"

\"Me too, Draco. Me too.\"

Silently they rode the stairs to the top of the tower. Harry knocked, and they were bade to enter seconds later. Dumbledore was feeding Fawkes, looking expectantly at Draco and Harry. \"Ah, Harry, Draco. Have a seat.\" Fawkes flew over to Harry, landing on his knee and offering him his head. \"I guess you know why you\'re here.\"

Draco and Harry shared a look, and Harry shook his head. \"No, Professor. We don\'t.\"

\"Ah.\" Dumbledore\'s eyes twinkled. \"What happened today, Harry?\"

\"Well... Draco and I flew to the cave. I gave Lucius and Draco some privacy before I handed Lucius your letter. He promised me to let me know by tonight.\"

\"And your answer is right here.\" Lucius emerged from a dark corner, smiling at his son and Harry. A genuine smile.
