Chapter Eleven: The Reading Of Old Letters..


Severus decided he needed a drink, he knew that if he was going to be spending time around Serena he was going to need something to make him less jittery. She had that affect on him,she always had and something wasn't quite right in his mind where she was concerned but he couldn't place it, it was as if his mind found a brick wall and he didn't like it, not at all...

As he made his way to the Three broomsticks he just was silent. He could see and hear happiness around him as he for a moment pulled his cloak tighter around him and made his way into the pub. He found a table in the corner looking towards the door as he always did out of habit as well as to be safe as many years as a spy for the Order had made him learn to be cautious and to always keep an eye out for anyone coming and going in places. He knew that if anyone saw him they would stay away but he let himself a moment relax as he told himself.

The war is over, it's silly but none the less it's good to be cautious. Perhaps a drink would calm me a moment and it's all that woman's fault!

Last night he had barely slept as he had known she was just in the next room, a female in his private quarters. In all the years he had been Potions Master at Hogwarts never once had he ever had a woman in his quarters, at least not in the way that she was. He lay awake in his bed until that drove him finally out of it and he had decided to get up and check on his students. He took his time checking on the children as he would normally but this time he was slow and meticulous as he dreaded going back to his chambers. It had been ridiculous him being afraid of a woman..

I'm not afraid of her! I'm just irritated because she is in my personal space, making my quarters smell like her, like bloody flowers..

Severus came out of his thoughts as Madame Rosemerta came over to take his drink order.

“It is nice to see you here for once! What can I get for you Professor??”

Severus looked at her,he had her as a student and she was annoying even then however, he just sighed and rubbed his temples as he looked at the exasperating woman who seemed to be almost fawning over him.

“A flaggan of Elf made oak matured mead.”

He said as he just looked at her dismissively as she nodded and left smiling ear to ear. Severus sighed as he rubbed his eyes a moment and he observed the students and townspeople around him. All seemed to be in good spirits and happy all with other people as he sat alone in a dark corner. When his drink was brought to him, he nodded and thanked the woman and dismissed her as he took a sip and he relaxed a small bit, The drink wasn't usually something he drank but today he needed a bit more than the usual wine he partook of and he let his mind wander as he wondered why he was so unnerved by Serena Heart of all people.

Music began to play and he watched as it seemed for a moment he was lost in a memory of a day long ago now. He saw a younger version of himself taken by the hand and pulled to the sawdust covered floor and he felt a woman in his arms. He looked down at her with a smile as she looked up at him her hazel brown eyes shining as she then laid her head on his chest and he caressed her hair. He danced with her like this for awhile, both of them barely moving even though the music wasn't by any means slow at all.

Severus snapped back to reality as he saw a few of his students holding hands and a few couples dancing and kissing gently and he wondered why he had that thought? What had made him go back to that time in his life? He knew of course who the woman was, it irritated him as he then thought on that night. He remembered the look on her face as he had taken her hand and kissed it, had kissed her and as he had lead her upstairs to...

Severus groaned as he downed his drink and refilled it from the bottle and he knew that his line of thinking would do him no good. The past was the past and he knew that he would not want to go down that road again. He wondered why she was really there at the school. She had to be there more than to visit his Godson and her son. He would have asked the Headmaster but he knew that Dumbledore would not answer him except cryptically and he knew he didn't have the patience to suffer the old fool and his messages as well as try to figure them out.

He was lost in his thoughts as Blaise,Draco,Hermione,Pansy and Serena entered the cheerful little pub. Draco was carrying shopping bags as well was Blaise as they found a table and Draco pulled out a chair for Hermione. Blaise also extended the pleasantry to his Mother and Pansy and kissed Pansy's forehead as he grinned and found himself a seat.

“Let me get this one,after all we are celebrating are we not?”

Serena said as she got up and began to make her way to the bar and she stopped as she made out Severus in the corner and she walked over towards him. Severus didn't even notice she had come to stand next o him until she asked him casually.

“Why are you sitting over here alone by yourself Sev? Surely you have someone you could be sitting with and having fun with?”

Severus snapped out of his reverie and turned to look at her. For a moment he just sighed but then he scowled as he looked around and replied sardonically.

“A bunch of insufferable fools and troublemakers is all I see.. “

Serena just grinned and she shook her head at him. As she did she for a moment took a seat and looked at him amused.

“Severus,when did you get to be such a fuddy duddy? I remember you used to like to come here in our seventh year.. those were good times you know?”

Serena then just sighed as she looked at him. Severus caught eyes with her and didn't say anything for a moment. She just shook her head as he then to his surprise and irritation grabbed his glass of mead and took a sip. She made a face and then replied.

“No wonder,this is terrible! You actually drinking this swill? What happeend to the man who drank mulled wine and atleast tried to have fun now and then?”

Severus looked at her and told her deadpanned and just with no amusement in his voice.

“He died along time ago. What the hell are you doing here Serena?”

Serena looked at him a moment as he said her name. She put down the glass and looked at him steadily.

“Trying to say hello and see why you look so grumpy. Can't an old friend say hi to someone she used to know?”

Severus sighed deeply and then shook his head as he did he just placed his mask of indifference on a moment and looked exasperated at her.

“At Hogwarts? What are you doing here at my school? “

Serena looked a bit abashed a moment as she wondered why he was acting this way but she just decided it was because he was just grumpy and she told him softly.

“To visit my children and our God son! Why else do you think? I mean you made things perfectly clear it seems as to your rudeness now that you don't want me here. I just wish you'd have at least answered one of my owls after we parted. Severus why did you do it? Why did you just stop seeing me? I mean do you think I actually bought the horse shit about your parents forbidding you to see me anymore? Look, I don't know what happened to the man I used to know but he is inside you someplace .”

Serena got up then and looked at the children who were happy with their significant others and her face softened a moment. As she did this Severus followed her eyes and looked a moment in curiosity.

“Isabella has finally come home Severus,she was here all along. You've been able to interact with them more than I have. They seem to be happy and I am happy for them. You could learn a thing or two from those kids. “

Serena then stormed off and made a excuse to the children and went to leave. As she did Severus just watched her leave the pub and after a minute he cursed under his breath as he threw money on the table and went out the door.

He saw her ahead of him walking back towards the school and he cursed as he approached her. He knew she was crying by the gentle shaking of her shoulders and he moved to stand in frnt of her.

Serena was walking and stopped as she bumped into something and she almost fell over but a arm snaked out to catch her and steady her. She looked up at Severus as the tears still flowed. Severus didn't know what to do as he wasn't good with comforting others and just sighed then to his surprise Serena lay her head on his chest and he looked down at her,the woman's face buried on his chest and he reluctantly drew his arms around her as she hugged his slender waist .

Severus didn't know how long they stood like that but it seemed to him a long time but not long enough as Serena pulled away from him slowly and looked at him. He could see anger and sorrow in her eyes and he knew that she was going to yell at him. However to his surprise Serena didn't yell or say a word. She just leaned up and kissed him gently and then she made her way past him walking back to the school.

“What was that for and about Serena?”

Severus said as he grabbed her elbow and turned her to look at him. He looked down at her as she looked back at him defiantly a moment. As if he was being silently challenged and to his own surprise,without thought he breached the distance between then and captured her lips with his own. He held her face in his palms caressing her cheeks as he kissed her slowly a moment. He pulled back as he sighed and kissed her forehead in a way that was friendly.

Serena just looked up at him and he shook his head as he extended his arm to her and he decided to escort her back to the castle grounds. As they walked students all stared at the couple and Severus raised an eyebrow and people scattered. The first snow of the year started and as Serena grinned and looked at him, Severus took off his cloak and wrapped it around her shoulders.

Serena looked at him gratefully and thanked him as they walked and Severus just relaxed and wondered what the hell it was. Why the hell he was feeling like this? He then asked her after a moment.

“Why have you walked back into my life Serena? After all these years? We were different people then..”

He sighed as she stopped and looked at him and answered with a question to his frustration.

“Did you ever read any of my letters at all? I wonder if you had then would we be fighting like this when we both know there is more than animosity between us,even after seventeen years..”

Serena then walked on ahead as Severus looked at her and had stopped and wondered what she could have written him? Had she not said their goodbyes and yet here she was in his life again after so long. He didn't know what to make of it as he walked and got to the entrance hall and decided he needed to go to his quarters. As he entered he went to a box that sat on the top of his cupboard and pulled it down. He opened it and peered at a stack of letters neatly wrapped in a red ribbon and he lifted the stack out. As he did he looked them each over and he decided to open one. He used his letter opener to release the seal and he opened it and sat down and began to read.

My Dear Severus,
It's been two weeks ,fourteen days now since I have seen your handsome face, kissed your lips and been held in your arms. I miss you so much my love! Please send me word when we can meet again? I know that you are busy and taking classes in preparation of becoming a Potions Master and that it takes up a lot of your time,however I ask just for a few moments nothing too much to ask for really just to see you even for a minute would be wonderful darling.

Please Severus, just for a few minutes even just I need to see you,to have you hold me my sweet.

Severus put down the letter and scowled but then he opened the next one and he stopped still at the words in black and white in front of him on the parchment. He noticed tear stains on the letter in places as he re read the words.


Dear Severus,
I'm pregnant.. I know this will come as a shock but I just found out this morning and.. Severus I'm keeping our child. I know that it's been a month with no word from you now.. I hope that my letter has found you and that you will come to me. My mother and Father aren't pleased however, they do not want me to be rid of our child. Please come Sev, I heard my Father making plans with my mother to marry me off to Antonio Zabini. It seems he does not care that I am with child as he cannot have his own.

We are to be wed despite my objections in a months time, please come and take me away from here Severus! Please my darling at least send word to me..?

Severus dropped the parchment and he opened the rest of the letters and looked at them, he felt himself shrivel inside as he read each and every word. She stopped writing when the baby or babies were born and he just looked at the stack of letters, there were twelve and he took a calming breath.

Mine.. that means? Blaise is my son and Isabella is my...

Severus felt all the air in his body leave him as he got up on shaky legs and opened the door to his room. He didn't know what to say as he pondered all he had read and tried to reason it all. He was a Father? He had two children and.. He had abandoned her.. Serena had bared his children and he had abandoned her and let her marry another man she didn't love?

Severus just was still in shock as he made his way to the Headmasters office and yelled out the password and entered as Serena and Albus seemed to be talking about something. Severus looked at Serena and then he declared.

“I want a test, I need to be sure..Serena.. “

As he said this Serena just nodded and Dumbledore smiled and his eye twinkled and Severus just wanted to wipe the smile off the old man's face as he gestured Severus to sit.

“Your children will be here momentarily, I have set up of course a potion to decide whenever or not Miss Granger is indeed your daughter. However also I suppose that it will be more accurate with both of you blood in it. I can tell you this much. If it is true then indeed they are your children Severus.”

Albus looked a moment gravely at Serena and Severus and he sighed.

“That's.. that's fine then Headmaster.. Serena I owe you an apology, I never read your letters before today. I would have stood by you believe me..”

Severus looked grave as then a knock came to the door and Hermione and Blaise accompanied by Draco and Pansy walked in and the kids all were surprised by Severus being there but said nothing. Serena just patted Severus's arm and then she smiled brightly.

“Alright Isabella, this potion will tell us if indeed you are my child.”

Serena was handed a silver knife and she placed a drop of her blood into the potion and to Hermione's surprise Severus did likewise and then Hermione nodded as she copied the other two and the potion sat a moment unchanging. A minute later it shone a golden hue and Severus looked on in shock as well as everyone else sans Dumbledore and Serena.

“What does it mean?”

Hermione asked as she looked to Serena who was smiling big.

“You are my child as I believed. Welcome home baby girl”

Severus looked at the potion stunned and then he replied..

“They are mine..”

Severus then seemed to faint as the others all looked at him surprised as well as confused.. Serena got on her knees and was lightly smacking Severus's face to wake him as his words seemed to echo to everyone's brains.

“What did he mean they are mine?” Hermione asked as Serena looked up at her and Blaise and told them quietly.

“Severus Snape is your father..”
