A New Task

Chapter Ten: A New Task

Lucius arrived upon his guardian Brax. Brocc and Brax touched snouts in greeting as Lucius followed Severus into the Fates bower.

The second he saw his father, Draco charged full force stopping short so he was nose to nose with his sire.

“What have you done to my mate?” he growled.

“I merely wanted to make things a little easier for you my son.” He tried to calm his irate offspring, his anger and confusion was pouring off him in waves.

“You have tainted her with yourself somehow! I could issue a spar challenge for such a offense!” Draco could feel his powers growing and culminated, waiting to strike out.

“It is of your blood as well, and I am mated, she was merely more… calmed by your presence rather than focusing on the logistical part of your relationship.” Lucius explained.

“And what does that all mean?” Draco asked his father, what little patients he had left was quickly slipping away.

“Yes, please explain,” came Hermione’s soft voice as she moved between her mate and his father, placing her little hands on Draco’s heaving chest, calming him down somewhat.

“Since I am your mate’s father my Gancanagh blood does not have the same affect on you as it has on other women. But it can calm you considerably and allow you to become more- open to suggestion.”

“And how did you share your blood with me?” she asked holding Draco around the waist and rubbing circles down his tensed back.

“I had your elf add a calming draught with my blood added to your tea every day after she explained about you little panic attack.” Lucius explained, not having the decency to look sheepish about his deceit.

“Lucius you have always been too clever for your own good,” the red haired fate chastised in an almost teasing way.
“What does this mean for Draco and I?” Hermione asked.

“That all depends on you my dear, we will lift the affects of Lucius’s blood and since you were tricked you will have the right to choose the path you take from here.”

“But Draco will live whatever the outcome?” Lucius asked.

“Yes, the bonding was completed, should his mate reject him, his body will live on.”

“Come child,” the blond Fate bade Hermione closer. Her pale hand rose to rest against he young witched cheek and she breathed in deeply.

Hermione felt like a fog had been lifted from her mind. The world looked sharper and brighter, and the weight of her current situation fell upon her like a tidal wave.

She felt her knees shake, and Draco reached out to stable his mate.

“Are you alright?” he whispered in her ear.

“I just need a few moments to…process everything.”

“Of course my darling.”

“You may go sit on the beach young witch, we must talk to our Gancanaghs.” The Fate with the raven hair pointed her long graceful fingers to the bowers open.

Draco watched Hermione leave, followed by his godfather. He then turned to his father, and with a voice so saturated with malice it made the room’s stonewalls tremble.

“If you have cost me my mate, I will spend the rest of my miserable life detesting you with every fiber of my being.”

Hermione walked out into the sandy beach of the Fates ethereal isle. She sat down and looked out into the ever-moving mist trying to figure out the most logical route to take.

She could not deny the bond or the love she had found with Draco. There was no point, he was her anam, and she had no doubt of his love and devotion.

But what of her family and her friends? She had all but disappeared and now she would be returning with a mate- a husband.

She was looking up into the twirling clouds when she felt the Professor sit next to her.

“How are you?” he asked

“Attempting to find the most advantageous course of action.”

“Any ideas so far?”

“My parents will take some time to come to terms with the fact that I am ‘married’ but Harry, Ron and the rest of my extended family are an entirely different story.”

“So you will agree to have the Fats bind you together- forever?”

“Of course, Draco is still my mate, my other half. The circumstances may not be ideal but I love him.”

“I don’t know why Lucius and the Fates were so worried about, you would not have tortured Draco as Narsissa did Lucius.”

“No, his biggest issue would have been dragging me from the library and stop me making plans long enough to woo me.” She said with a smile.

“How are they inside?” Hermione asked after a beat of silence.

“The Fates are- no doubt -chastising, while simultaneously teasing them.”

“May I ask you a question?” Hermione asked, twisting to look at the pointed silhouette of her former professor.

“Of course, though I may not answer.” He said honestly.

“Why are you at the Fates bidding?”

“Ahh, good question.”

“Will you answer?”

“You know of my magical lineage yes?” he asked

“You are from the Prince family.”

“And once upon a time we were a family of princes, that was until one of my ancestors betrayed a pact with the Fates.”

“A pact?”

“It is the same old story, my great-grandfather wanted a certain woman- not for love but for alliance. He promised the Fates he would lead his war legions, which were praised as the best in the isles, in their name if they would weave his fate as he wanted. They stuck a pact, but the Fates did not know that my grandfather had also made a deal with Branwen.”

“The goddess of love?”

“By her Celtic name yes, she would bewitch the woman if the Fates did not hold up of their end of the deal.”

“And they found out didn’t they.”

“Oh yes, they stripped my ancestor of his title but left the name as a reminder of their former glory. Then they cursed all the future generations to be the minions of the Fates until one of the family members could break their curse.”

“What curse.”

“We Prince’s are not to know love- true, unconditional love- Miss Granger.”

And with that statement a great roar came from the bower, which had Hermione and Severus sprinting toward the cave.

Brocc and Brax were standing between their Gancanaghs, attempting to keep them apart.

Draco and Lucius were both in their Gancanagh forms, their markings flashing and magic crackling off the cavernous walls. As Hermione got closer she saw a long gash down Draco’s chest that was oozing blood. She glanced at Lucius and was not surprised to see a vicious red slit running down his cheek and neck.

“Draco!” she called out over the growling dragons and humming magical charge.

He turned to see her making quick strides to him, so to his great surprise Hermione was in his arms.

“Are you okay mo anam?” she asked leaning back to look at the nasty cut, then leaning back in to give the skin nearby a gentle kiss, in hopes of taking away some of the pain.

Draco’s entire presence changed in a matter of momenst. The raging Gancanagh was transformed into a mate in love.

“Mo croí,” he sighed in relief “does this mean you will stay with me?”

“Yes Draco, I know that my feeling for you are all mine and very real.”

Draco wrapped his long arms around his love and brought their lips together in a sweet kiss meant to show is love, his adoration and his joy.

When the kiss broke Hermione looked up and smiled.

“Will still have some issues we need to deal with.”

“What are those?”

“My family.”

“Your whole family?”

“Mum, Dad, Harry, the Weasley’s…”

“All the Weasley’s!” Draco said with eyes going as wide as tea saucers.

“Oh yes,” she laughed at his horrified expression.

A/N Sorry for the long wait- between Capstone projects, thesis and then getting sick it slowed progress considerably, but I have a little break before graduation so I hope to get this tale all wrapped up.

Thanks for reading!
