Chapter 11- A Nightmare At Hogwarts

Things at Hogwarts were getting to be almost unbearable for the staff and students alike. Hermione and Severus weren’t even acknowledging one another. Hermione sat with Filius while Severus sat next to Albus and Minerva as usual.

For Severus, he had reverted back to the way he was at the height of the war. He was snarky with everyone; staff, students, the ghosts, and the house elves. His students now dreaded going to his class every day.

Hermione on the other hand had become unpleasant as well. She was short with her patients. Albus had to talk to her after an incident with the Head Girl, Mellisa Hinley. Mellisa had come to Hermione in near tears saying she couldn’t handle the pressure. Hermione had told the young woman to shut up and grow up.

“Albus, I know you really don’t want to get involved in the personal business of your staff, but this problem between Severus and Hermione is getting out of hand. They need an intervention,” Helena Hooch stated.

“Helena is right Albus. When Hermione and I have tea, she’s quiet and sullen,” Minerva added.

“I agree. Severus is depressed as well. Lucius went to see him last weekend, but Severus was quiet. Lucius is quite worried about him,” Albus sighed.

“How can we help them?” Filius asked.

“I have an idea. I’m still waiting to finalize some last minute details. I’ll know by tomorrow, and then I can set everything up,” Albus answered.

Hermione sat in an armchair in front of the fireplace in her sitting room. In her hand was a glass of brandy, still full. As she watched the flames dance, her thoughts ran ramped through her head. ‘How could I be so cold to him? Yet how could he get tickets to something he knows I despise and expect me to be happy about it?’

With a heavy sigh she took a swallow of her drink. She felt the liquor burn slightly on the way down her throat, but relished in the sensation. ‘Oh what am I going to do? I guess I shouldn’t be surprised he broke up with me. After all, look at my track record with men. Ron and I only lasted a year and a half. Then there was Demitri in St. Petersburg, we only lasted two years,’

Hermione tearfully got to her feet and moved to the fireplace. With an anguished cry, she threw her glass into the fireplace. As the flames roared slightly, she turned and ran to her bedroom. There she threw herself across her bed burying her face in her arms and sobbing.

“Severus, I miss you so much. I still love you,” She cried. For half an hour she cried until she finally fell asleep. A little after midnight a house elf named Tilly tucked the sleeping witch into bed.

Down in the dungeons Severus jerked awake in bed, breathing raggedly; again for the dozenth time since his fight with Hermione. Since the fight his dreams had plagued him with nightmares of Hermione falling for another wizard. Each night he watched the woman he loved marry another.

“These nightmares are going to drive me crazy,” He hissed as he climbed out of bed.

He threw on his robe and entered the sitting room. With a heavy sigh he dropped into his arm chair. He flicked his wrist and the fire roared to life. He stared into the flames. ‘I don’t know what to do about this. I don’t want to lose her, but if we can’t fix this problem I may very well lose her,’

It was nearly three in the morning before Severus felt relaxed enough to try and go back to sleep. Severus climbed back under his covers and slowly drifted off to sleep once more.

The next day Albus got the answer he was hoping for. Now he could get everything ready. He quickly summoned Minerva. Once at his office, he filled her in on his plans to help Hermione and Severus.

“Albus, how will we get them there?” Minerva asked.

“I will take care of that. Please ask Filius and Pomona to watch the hospital wing from after dinner on Friday night till Saturday night,” Albus answered with a smile.

Hermione had just entered her bedroom when she spotted the letter on her pillow. With a shake of her head she sat on the bed and opened it. She was a bit surprised at what she read.

Hermione,

I know the last few weeks have been rough for you. After dinner on Friday, Minerva will meet you at your rooms. This is not a request.

Don’t worry about the hospital wing, Filius and Pomona will watch over it for you. You will also need an overnight bag.

If you refuse to go with Minerva, she has my permission to stun you and make you go with her. Again, this is not a request.

Albus

Hermione couldn’t believe this! She tossed the letter into the fire before getting ready for bed. Once the lights were out and she in bed, she calmed down enough to think over Albus’ letter. ‘Albus is right. I need to get away from Hogwarts and Severus too. At least Minerva will be with me. Maybe when I get back I’ll be calm enough to try talking to Severus,’ she sighed.

Severus finished packing his overnight bag. Unlike Hermione, he wasn’t angry about his letter from Albus. He was glad Albus suggested he leave, at least overnight. In fact, he was going to suggest the same thing to Albus, but the letter had arrived first.

‘I just hope whenever I return this whole thing can be rectified,’ Severus thought as he sat his bag at the foot of his bed.

Severus stripped down to his boxers and climbed into bed. He rolled onto his back and folded his hands behind his head. After the fight, his bed, hell his whole life, felt empty without Hermione at his side.

“Merlin help me get Hermione back,” Severus prayed before slowly falling asleep.
