“So when do we leave?” Hermione asked, still looking at the letter Lucius had let her see.

“We?” he asked, raising an eyebrow.

“Yes, we! You don’t expect me to sit here and twiddle my thumbs while you go off to rescue her by yourself? I was a Gryffindor, not a Hufflepuff.” She said, crossing her arms. Lucius growled softly.

“Look…we don’t have time to argue. According to the elves, she left several hours ago. She has several hours on us, but we should be just fine if we take the horses.” He said. Hermione’s eyes widened a bit.

“Horses?” she asked. Lucius regarded her silently for a moment.

“No one is making you come.” He said softly. She swallowed hard.

She was not good with horses, but she wanted to make sure that Daisy was all right. Damn it, the smug look on his face was infuriating! She’d show him! She’d ride his damned horses, and she’d do it well!

“I can deal with horses…I just wanted to make sure you didn’t say…er…..Porsches.” she said. His eyes rolled skyward.

“You have ten minutes to gather anything you might need for a few days, and then meet me in the foyer, and I’ll take you to the stables to pick a mount.” He said, and walked from the room, presumable to gather some things for himself.

Hermione was fairly certain that silk didn’t hold up well in the wild…she wasn’t sure what he’d be taking. Or wearing. She snorted, and then disappeared with a pop.

~~

Hermione was damned-near hyperventilating as she stared at the large black horse.

“This is Blackfire.” Lucius said, adjusting the saddle and stirrups for Hermione’s short legs. Blackfire snorted in response. “He puts on a front, but he’s a big baby.” Lucius said, and gave Blackfire a look that Hermione missed. Blackfire’s large shaggy head turned to Lucius, and he gave a whiny sound. “Stop crying…she won’t weigh anything compared to me…now suck it up.” Lucius said, as if he were talking to an errant child. Blackfire’s head raised, and he stood looking very much like the regal beast he was.

“Do you need help getting on?” Lucius asked, turning to look at the pale-faced Hermione. She nodded.

It took several tries to get Hermione onto the large horse. Lucius had already broken a sweat trying to heave her onto Blackfire’s back, and Blackfire was annoyed because Lucius had to adjust the saddle twice when Hermione went right over the side. Hermione was already sore, and tired.

Lucius shoved her feet through the stirrups, and put a sticking charm on her bottom.

“Now stay!” he snapped, and fetched his own horse, a sturdy bay Clydesdale, and adjusted the saddle bags that contained their food and supplies. He mounted the beast fluidly, and kicked it into a trot. As he turned his head back, he couldn’t keep himself from snorting as Blackfire took off behind him. The look on Hermione’s face was priceless.

She had faced down Killing Curses and Dark Lords with nary a flinch, but slap her on the back of a horse and she was a big baby.

He chuckled quietly, but his smile faded as he remembered what he was going into the Forest to do. It wouldn’t do to be distracted while inside the woods. There were things that could make a grown man cry in those woods. And centaurs. The Centaurs should never be forgotten.

“Come on.” He said, and with a click of his tongue, the two horses started a quick trot, with Hermione holding on for dear life.

Daisy pulled back her arrow slowly, stretching the bowstring taught as she aimed. Killing rabbits with arrows wasn’t exactly accurate, but she didn’t have enough time to set up a trap just yet, and she was rather hungry. Some fire roasted rabbit sounded really good right now.

She was startled by the crack of a twig behind her, and let her arrow go with a jerk. The arrow thudded uselessly into a tree behind the little rabbit, and, startled, the tiny creature took off.

“Damn!” she hissed, and whirled around to see who had snapped the twig. Two young centaur males stood before her, their humanoid arms crossed across their chests, smirking like they were up to something. They looked identical, their brown tails flicking in unison.

“It’s the little human that’s causing such a stir in the forest, Jed.” The one on her right said softly.

“Indeed, Forge. But she doesn’t look so tough to me. I don’t know why elder Arbino thinks we shouldn’t mess with her. I could stomp her easily.” The other said. Daisy looked between the two in disbelief. Centaurs were peaceful creatures…weren’t they? They were in America….but then again…in America Tea was cold. This country was crazy…

“I mean the forest no harm. I just came here for a few days of rest.” Daisy said softly. “I’m not hurting anything, and I have no intention of doing so. I’ve only taken what I need to survive.” She said. Jed looked at his brother. He had been under the impression that the little human meant harm… Why was his brother angry at her if she was living there just like them?

“Forge…Maybe we should just leave her alone…” he said. Truth be told, the little human looked terribly frightened, and he didn’t really want to hurt her…

“Grow up, Jed! I just want to see her twitch a bit…” Forge said, and grinned evilly, showing his teeth. Daisy’s eyes widened, and with surprising speed, she took off running, dodging through the trees. Forge let out an angry shout, and followed behind her, his hooves tearing up the leaves as he ran. Daisy was horrified that a centaur would attack, but she kept her thoughts to herself.

“Forge! She’s headed right for the camp!” Jed cried, taking off behind them.

Daisy dodged between the trees desperately. She knew she had no way of outrunning the four-legged creatures, but she hoped that at least she could slow him down enough with maneuvering through the trees to lose him.

But something went wrong. Horribly, horribly wrong. As she turned to see how close he was to her, she tripped over a hidden root, and went tumbling down a steep hill in front of her. She rolled painfully to the bottom, flipping head over heels several times before thudding to a halt. She looked up, her vision dancing, to see a pure white blur looking down at her, before she blacked out completely.

~~

Arbino looked down at the unconscious human, anger slowly building as he looked up and saw the Twin Terrors standing at the top of the hill. He just knew those two had something to do with this.

“Get down here!” he hissed angrily. The two centaur boys looked at each other sheepishly, and then trotted down the hill. They knew they were in for a good flogging that night.

By this time several other centaurs had gathered behind Arbino, whispering amongst themselves about the human at his hooves.

“I wonder what he’ll do with her? No human has ever found our camp and lived to tell the tale..”

“Yes, but she didn’t look like she meant to find us. Besides…there’s Jed and Forge. It wouldn’t be fair to kill her if she was just caught up in one of their pranks…”

“Yes, that’s true. Arbino will know what to do. He’s a fair creature.”

Arbino knelt slightly and grabbed Daisy’s arm, dragging her along in the dirt beside him. It looked rather painful, but she felt light enough that he was sure there wouldn’t be any damage. He approached a spotted brown female, and dropped Daisy at her hooves.

“At least make sure she isn’t going to die. Get her awake, and we’ll see her intentions before I make my decision.” The female nodded, and knelt down to Daisy as the white male had done. But she picked her up in her arms like a small child, and carried her towards a hide-covered hut.

The white male, Arbino, then turned to the two young twin centaurs.

“You two follow me. You have an appointment with the whip.” He said. Jed swallowed hard, and looked over at his brother, who looked equally frightened. But the two took identical deep breaths, and started towards the older white centaur, following him deeper into the camp.

A smaller young female centaur, whose humanoid body only looked a little over ten years old, shivered softly.

“Those two won’t forget this day for at least a few weeks to come…”
