Battles

Harry didn’t run, but stayed put. Before he knew it, he was pinned to the ground. Hermione sniffed his neck, panting softly as she did so. Her body was trembling as she caressed his hair.

“I can feel your every emotion,” she breathed. “You’ve been stuck in my head for eight years.” She lifted her head. “I’m tired of having to explain myself to you, Harry. I’m tired period.” She moved off of him, her eyes going back to normal. “If you hate me, fine. Leave me alone and let’s be done with any communication between us…”

“Why didn’t you tell me that Lupin had gone mad?”

She blinked at him startled. “Lupin? Mad? No, he wasn’t mad. He was a werewolf. He was a beta at that, Harry. He did as he was supposed to do or he died. His pack would have killed him if he showed weakness or any sign of humanity.” Tears dripped down her face. “Severus?”

“What, my sweet?” he murmured, coming over to her.

“I’ve had enough of you sneaking around me,” she told him. “I need to feed for two more days and rest for another three. Take Harry to see the portrait. He wants answers, Severus. And since he isn’t inclined to believe me…” She sighed heavily. “It’s the only thing I can think of.” She reached out her hands to him. “I’m weary of being on the ground. Help me up.”

“Why don’t you tell me what happened?” Harry demanded.

Hermione was helped to her feet and soon was turning to facing him. “Because not all of us were built to be the hero like you, my friend. Some of us have night terrors that never go away. Nightmares so terrible that if I didn’t have my memory altered in some way, I would be as mad as you think Lupin must have been.” She held her hand out to him. “Let me help you to your feet.”

Harry ignored it and got to his feet himself. “You have done nothing but lie to me. What makes you think that I could believe you now?”

“Because I can’t lie to you,” she whispered.

“Right.” And with that Harry charged off to the school.

Hermione stood there shaking, looking to where she had him pinned to the ground earlier. Why did she bother anymore, she asked herself, even as she crumbled to the ground.

A furious Snape yanked Harry out of his sound sleep. Harry had enough time to put his glasses on before Snape yanked him into the hallway. He threw him against the wall, getting into his face once he did.

“I’ve been very patient, Mr. Potter,” Severus snarled at him. “But I find that my patience has come to its limits. You selfish, egocentric brat, have gone too far. You want the truth. So be it. You will know the truth—all of it!” He curled his fingers into fists. “All you had to do was show her some decency! Was that too much to ask? Was it!”

“What happened?” Harry asked.

Snape glared at him but only said, “Follow me.”

They walked briskly over to the hospital wing. Bill Weasley had to grab Shacklebolt in mid leap towards Harry. Ron glared at him, turning away from him as he went over to stand next to Tonks. It was she that went over to Harry and pulled him aside. She wasn’t speaking, but from the looks of it she was taking her time to think over what she was going to say to him.

“Harry,” she murmured slowly. “What do you remember of what happened in the days before the war?”

“Ron, Hermione and I were looking for the huxcruxes,” he whispered. “We had found at least five when the war started.”

“And what do you remember about when Hermione vanished?” she asked.

“She told me that she had been attacked, but never said who…” His eyes went wide. “Was it Lupin?”

Tonks nodded. “He abducted her.” She swallowed back the bile. “When we found her, she had been beaten and raped. She was on the brink of death, Harry, and her only concern was you.”

“Is that why she killed him?”

Her eyes went hard. “No, but I’ll leave that for her to tell you.” She walked him over to Hermione’s bedside.

When he looked down at his one time good friend, he gasped in horror at the sight of her. Her skin was so deathly pale. What little color there was more likely there due to the blood that she had just consumed. He sat down next to her, touching her hand and found it as cold as marble.

Hermione’s eyes fluttered open. She blinked around the room, her eyes landing on Harry.

“Are they safe?” she croaked.

“Whom?”

“The children?” she asked, coughing. “Did the werewolves get to them?”

Fear spiked through him. The werewolves had tried to get to the students? They had been placed into the safety of the Great Hall. But there had been wards to protect the building and they had been safe, hadn’t they? It was then that he remembered what he had learned in the first pensive. Lupin along with Bill Weasley had been asked by Dumbledore to reinforce the wards by set up by the headmaster. He would have known how to get around them without setting off any alarm. They could have easily injured, infected, or killed any number of students if they had gotten through.

“No,” Harry told her. “They’re safe.”

She relaxed even as tears poured down her face. “Please tell me you don’t hate me. I had to kill him, Harry. I didn’t want to…but he…he was going to hurt them.” Her hand caught hold of his. “There’s so much I have to explain. So much you need to know.” Her grip relaxed. “Just know that I didn’t have a choice. Lupin wasn’t the man we knew anymore.” She took a deep breath. “Severus?” Snape came over and kneeled next to her, combing her hair out of her face. “When can I go back to our rooms? I don’t like it here.”

“Soon, my sweet witch,” he murmured. “It’s time for more medicine.”

“The blood booster?”

“Yes,” he replied, helping her sit up. “As well as blood soup.”

“That soup is gross.”

“Yes, but you need it.”

Harry walked away from her, going over to Ron. “Did you know that Lupin…”

“Had gone full werewolf? Yes, because I did something you should have years ago. I asked,” he hissed. “You never saw her after Snape found her that night after the Battle of Hogwarts, did you? She was a bloody mess, mate. It took weeks for her to recover and they obliviated her memory so she could do so cleanly.” He took a deep breath. “She’s reverted back to that time. She’s been remembering everything they did to her…”
