Chapter Nine
As he walked into the McDonalds, Harry paused to take in the sight of what was soon to be his new family. Ever since his 11th birthday, he thanked whoever was up there that he had made the decision to help the Grangers. It had turned out to be the best gift he ever received, a family of his own. Soon, it would be official.
“I see you got my messages,” Harry said as he slid into the booth next to Hermoine.
“Yes we did young man, and how are you feeling?” asked Mrs. Granger with a worried look. She had been there for him when he had found out what that horrible man had done to Harry, and she was incensed to say the least. She wished she could just spirit both of the children away and protect them. She knew she wasn’t able to do either though. She didn’t have magic. The only thing she was capable of was being there for Harry to provide the support he so desperately needed.
Harry flinched; he had known she was going to ask that. The one thing he had learned was that it was impossible to lie to Mr. Granger’s stern visage, and Mrs. Granger’s warm gaze. Especially when they ganged up on him. Secretly he loved it, of course. It showed how deeply they cared and really knew him when they asked such shrewd questions.
“I may have made a mistake,” he took a sip of Hermione’s water to wet his suddenly dry throat. “I don’t think either Dudley, or his father, were aware of the true identity of Petunia. I also kind of told them about Dudley’s… condition. I don’t know what type of problems that might cause for Dudley down the road.”
“Well, I should say they deserve it!” Mr. Granger exclaimed. “They should have the fact that there son is in fact the very thing they persecuted you for festering in their narrow little minds!”
Harry just looked at him for a moment, “Yes, yes, I know. I didn’t say it was right, but they deserve much more than that for what they did to you.” He sighed, “If you went after them though, I’d be much stricter in my admonishment. Not sinking to their level and all.”
Harry smiled; this is why he felt so loved in this family. They weren’t afraid to chastise him, or correct him. It was always slightly alarming how Mrs. Weasley would go from screeching at her children, to sweetness towards Harry in an instant. Of course he was going to sink a few levels to get some vindication from certain individuals. He wanted to only waist it on the big fish though, and though it hurt, it had actually been more relieving to find out that he wasn’t actually related to those… people.
When Harry sensed a magical signature he hadn’t ever felt before, he swore to himself. He hadn’t been as careful as he normally was. He quickly did a scan of the signature and found no ill feelings in it. All the same, he decided it was time for the next part of their plan to be put into place.
He quickly gave the signal, and they left.
The Watcher observed as the Granger family left the restaurant. Interesting. It seems we were right in our assumptions that he was closer to that Granger girl than either of the old fools realized.
The Watcher decided to lose the trail for now. He had felt the boy probing his signature. He had also found the inconsistencies in the young ones minds. It took a lot of skill to keep a constant mock surface mind going. He wouldn’t have thought anything of it except for the slight delays between speech and thought that were barely perceptible. He doubted if anyone else would catch it though, it had taken him a while and he was one of the best Legilimens in the world. It had still taken him awhile to sift through those layers to reach their actual shields. He had been astounded to realize that it would take hours to break into their inner minds, and he wasn’t even sure if he could do it. The fact that he did all of this when they were not actively defending their minds was mind-boggling. As
