Monday, Nov. 24, 2003

Theo knocked on the door to Draco's office, glancing at his watch. Nearly noon, he might not be in. "Draco?" he called. "Have you got a minute, or are you busy?"

Draco was reading through old reports, trying to find any clues that might help them with his current case. So far, they had been no help. Harry was off to lunch with one of his friends.

"Sure, Theo," Draco said.

Theo pushed open the door and walked inside, shutting the door behind him and setting a fat file folder on Draco's desk. "This is what I've managed to come up with from what we know of the spell work on that case of yours," Theo said. "That's all the arithmetical calculations on it, and our best hypotheses on how it might actually work."

Draco nodded, and gestured to a chair. "Thanks." He cocked his head and, looking at his friend, asked, "How have you been?"

Theodore shrugged slightly and sat down. "Fine. About the usual, I suppose. You?"

Draco sat back smiling, "Nothing usual about my life lately, but definitely good. Harry moved into my townhouse."

Theo quirked a brow slightly. "Serious, then," he said. "It's working well?"

Draco's cheeks actually coloured and he looked down for a minute. "Yeah, if you don't count Beckett, the dog or Pansy's reactions."

"Pansy, surely, was to be expected," Theo remarked dryly, "but I've never known anyone to make you blush like that before."

Draco's blush deepened. "Yeah, he... um." He sighed, unable to figure out what to say.

Theo chuckled, shaking his head slightly. "Never thought I'd see the day."

“What day?" Draco asked.

Theodore's smile faded, just a little. "The day you were this completely in love," he murmured.

Draco sucked in a breath. "I didn't say I was in love."

"No," Theo replied, "but you didn't need to."

Draco stared at his desk for a moment. "Theo, why are you so perceptive about everything except for people's feelings about you?"

Theo arched a brow. "Care to elaborate?"

Draco's head dropped back in his chair and shook his head. "No, sorry, I shouldn't have said anything. How are you and Pansy doing?"

Theodore's eyes narrowed. Draco wasn't going to get away with that so easily. "Draco," he said sharply.

"Theo, what do you want me to say?" Draco sighed. "You have Pansy and I have Harry."

"Not leaving things unsaid might be a nice place to start," Theo retorted.

Draco stood and came around the desk, sitting on the edge and looking at Theo thoughtfully. "Theo, if you have any questions about how I feel, ask."

Theo looked up at him, face perfectly expressionless, eyes carefully cold. "I suppose not," he said calmly, "as it's quite clear it doesn't matter any longer."

Draco's grey eyes were suddenly dark with anger. "What the fuck is that suppose to mean, Theo?" He stood, hands on hips glowering down at Theo.

Theo didn't so much as blink. "You said it yourself," he replied. "You have Harry, and I have Pansy. I can't matter now, if indeed it ever did."

"If it ever did? What the hell is that suppose to mean?" Draco's sneered.

"You tell me," Theo said sharply, standing, "since apparently you're so good at figuring me out."

Draco growled, "How bloody dense can an otherwise fucking brilliant wizard be?!" He grabbed Theo by the front of his robes and kissed him.

Theo drew in a harsh breath but didn't hesitate, just flatly refused to even think, for once. His fingers tangled roughly in Draco's silky hair as he kissed back, hard.

Draco surrendered to the kiss, to Theo, to all the things he never said. To the past they left behind. He kissed Theo, his mouth opening for him.

Theo's grip on Draco loosened slightly, but the intensity behind the touch didn't lessen in the slightest, and he pressed him closer, sliding his tongue into Draco's mouth.

Draco groaned, trembling at Theo's touch and his hands sliding up Theo chest to his shoulders. His tongue twisted with Theo's, tasting him.

Theo moaned, eyed squeezing more tightly shut. "Draco," he whispered against his lips, "Draco.... mm... shouldn't..."

Draco froze, realizing what he had started and not sure what to do about it. He laid a gentle kiss on Theo's lips and then rested his forehead against Theo's, breathing hard and trying to calm down. "You drive me crazy, Theo," he whispered.

Theo kept his eyes closed, trying desperately to gather his self-control and clamp down on the utterly ridiculous impulse to cry. He didn't do crying. "I... I should go," he managed.

Draco slid his arms further up around Theo's shoulders, gathering him closer, kissing his forehead. "We need to talk about this," Draco whispered against him, "but not here, not at work."

Theo stepped back, eyes snapping open. "What's to talk about, Draco?" he said bitterly. "We both fucked up, and Pansy is going to murder me, and you'll be lucky to escape with all your appendages still attached, and this... this was a mistake. A bad one."

"It was a kiss, Theo," Draco sighed. "I doubt Harry would begrudge us that. He knows we used to be... close."

"Harry's too much of a Gryffindor, but Pansy..." Theo shook his head. "Look, don't expect to see too much of me."

"Are you going to talk to her about it?" Draco asked, still holding Theo.

"I don't see a choice," Theo said, trying to squirm out of Draco's hold.

Draco reluctantly released Theo, crossing his arms over his chest. "Do you want me to?"

"And get it not only for doing this, but also for not being the one to tell her? I think not."

Draco nodded. "I did not mean to...put you in a difficult position, Theo. I just felt. Well, I guess I am starting to act on my feelings. Probably Harry's influence." He smirked at the last line.

"Yeah, well, and I'm sure the fact that I haven't so much as kissed a man in longer than I care to contemplate isn't helping this matter at all," Theo said wryly. "Look, of all the things you may or may not owe me apologies for, this isn't one."

Draco nodded, a shy smile on his face as he looked at Theo. "I enjoyed it."

Theo sighed and raked his fingers through his hair. "That's precisely the problem," he muttered. "So did I."

Draco nodded. "I have been your friend for a very long time and... I am here when you need me, okay?"

Theo almost smiled, but thought better of it. "Like I even know what I need," he said.

Draco nodded, smiling. "Thanks Theo."

"Don't," he said quietly. "Please."

Draco sighed. He leaned against the desk.

"I'm sorry," Theo whispered, and left.
