No Good Deed

It seemed like the next day that the Third Task was upon them, and Harry was staring down a dark corridor of hedges. He bit his lip and considered doing the 4-Points spell again. He looked up as he heard footsteps and saw Cedric Diggory galloping around the corner. Cedric grinned reassuringly and feminine scream rent the air.
“What the...” Harry began.
“I think it came from over there.” Cedric cut in, pointing to the west. There was no hesitation as the lovers-turned-combatants took off. Soon enough they came upon a surreal scene. Victor Krum was aiming his wand at Fleur Delacour. The petite girl writhed on the ground, clearly under the influence of the Cruciatus curse. Cedric charged forward, again without hesitation.
“Cedric!” Harry cried out. “Eleka nahmen nahmaen ah tum ah tum eleka nahmen nahmen nahmen ah tum ah tum eleka nahmen.”
He chanted the soothing words of the almost-charm under his breath as Krum and Cedric struggled.
“Let his flesh not be torn, let his blood leave no stain. Though Krum beats him, let him feel no pain. Let his bones never break, and however Krum tries to destroy him, let him never die. Let him never die!”
And just as quickly as it started, it was over. Cedric quickly bound Krum and sent up sparks above Fleur.
“They’ll come and get him, right?”
“Eventually.” Harry said, dizzy with relief. Cedric grinned again and they took off in opposite directions.

Harry was getting closer. He was making all the right turns and getting through the obstacles in record time. He only hoped Cedric was faring the same. He turned one of the second to last turns and was greeted by the largest spider he had ever seen.
“Eleka nahmen nahmen...” He began chanting again to control his sudden panic. “...ah tum ah tum eleka nahmen eleka nahmen nahmen ah tum ah tum eleka...”
The spider advanced.
“...eleka...”
Harry fired spell after spell, which had absolutely no effect on the beast.
“Oh...what is this chanting,” Harry gasped, “I don’t even know what I’m saying! I don’t even know what trick I ought to try...”
The thing suddenly grasped an ankle and lifted him, upside down, towards gleaming fangs.
“Cedric where are you?! Already dead or bleeding? One more disaster I can add to my generous supply?”
But just as the words left his mouth, Cedric appeared. He fired stunning spell after stunning spell at the soft underbelly of the gigantic monster. Soon enough it was overpowered and Harry tumbled to the ground along with it. He heard his ankle give an ominous pop as he landed. Cedric had gained a large gash on the side of his face that bled freely.
He gave Harry a hand up and supported his weight as they moved towards the last and final corner. As they walked, Harry noticed the cut on Cedric’s face.
“Unlimited. The damage is unlimited.” He sang softly as they walked. “To everyone I’ve ever tried to help or tried to love. And, oh, Cedric you’re the latest victim of my greatest achievement in a long career of distress. Every time I could, I tried making good, and what I made was a mess!”

They stopped at the entrance of the inner sanctum, an invisible light making the Cup gleam and glisten.
“Why is this happening?” Cedric whispered.
Harry gulped, time for the truth. “Hermione figured it out. It’s a charm gone wrong. She says there’s no way to reverse it, the singing and music ends when the story plays out.”
Cedric nodded curtly. “Together then. It’ll be a Hogwarts victory either way.”
They stopped just inches from the Cup.
“Are you sure?” Harry asked one final time.
“Yes.” Cedric said firmly.
They both grasped a handle and Harry felt a familiar tug behind his navel.

They were brought to a graveyard, but before either could question it, a high thin voice sounded in the night.
“Kill the spare.”
There was a jet of green light and before Harry knew it, he was staring into the cold lifeless eyes of his lover. Cedric Diggory was dead.

Harry looked up and the eyes of Peter Pettigrew greeted him. Harry felt a rush of hot anger and hatred fill him. First his parents, now his love, Wormtail must die
“No good deed goes unpunished!” He shouted, pointing his wand. “No act of charity goes unresented! No good deed goes unpunished, that’s my new creed! My road of good intentions lead where such a road always lead! No good deed goes unpunished!
Wormtail looked terrified in the face of Harry’s righteous anger. He needn’t have worried. Harry’s blind rage had also blinded him to the fact that faithful Death Eaters surrounded him. An all too familiar voice called out “Stupefy!” and Harry went down hard.

Soon enough Harry was revived. Bound to Tom Riddle Sr.’s headstone, he was helpless as pure evil once again rose and regained human form.

He was released from his bonds. His legs would not hold him and he fell to his hands and knees.
“Hermione.” He whispered. “Professor McGonagall. Cedric. Cedric!!”
He screamed as the pain overtook him. He was given back his wand and he ran like the coward Lord Voldimort taunted him as.
Harry suddenly realized that none of them would have wanted him to hide in fear behind a headstone, and in a burst of energy, he jumped out from his hiding place to face his enemy.
“One question haunts and hurts.” He spat at the Dark Lord. “Too much, too much to mention. Was I really seeking good, or just seeking attention?”

Voldemort sneered at the outpouring of teen angst. Until Harry began to stalk him, that is.

“Is that all good deeds are when looked at with an ice-cold eye? If that’s all good deeds, then maybe that’s the reason why!”

Twin beams of light; one red, one green. And the bead of gold connecting brother wands. A golden cage surrounds the combatants. Phoenix Song rose, a rich undercurrent to Harry’s angry counterpoint.

“No good deed goes unpunished! All helpful urges should be circumvented. No good deed goes unpunished! Sure I meant well, well, look what well meant did! All right! ENOUGH! So be it, so be it then!”

And with his love’s final request ringing in his ears, Harry ripped his wand away and dove for the cup and Cedric’s lifeless form. The portkey took him back. Kneeling over Cedric’s body, Dumbledore as his only witness, Harry made a vow.

“Let all be a witness, I’m wicked through and through! Since I could not succeed, Cedric saving you, I promise no good deed will I attempt to do again! Ever again! No good deed...will I do...again!”

He passed out
