Chapter Ten
The hairs went up on the back of Severus’s neck the moment that he heard the man’s name. The wizard had been a monster. He delighted in others’ pain the way some took joy in sunshine or the simple things in life. That would have been enough to sicken him if not for one clear fact—Dolohov had been a star in his wife’s nightmares for years.
“Dolohov?” Lucius muttered. “He’s alive?” When Rabastan shrugged, the blond wizard looked over to the tall, pale wizard. “Severus?”
“He’s dead.” He looked to his friend.
Frowning Lucius looked over to Rabastan. “Anyone else?”
He shook his head no. “It’s not like I socialize all that often.” He looked to Severus. “The last I heard was that I was still a wanted man.”
“I wouldn’t know,” Severus said dryly. “I’m the headmaster of Hogwarts, not an auror.”
“You married beneath yourself,” Rabastan muttered. “Blood traitor.”
It wasn’t Severus who attacked him, but Lucius. The big man found himself pinned to the wall with the blonde wizard’s wand pressed to the underside of his jaw.
“We were the fools,” Lucius muttered to him. “To follow a mad half blood into a war no one would have won and you are an idiot if you think any differently at this point.” He pulled away from him, his wand still out of his cane, and in hand. “When the dark lord was looking for headquarters, I didn’t see you or your brother volunteering your familial estates.”
Rabastan’s face went ruddy at the other man’s words.
“You knew as well as the rest of us what he was and you followed the piper with the same blind devotion.”
Rabastan glared at him saying nothing.
“The king is dead and I for one have never been one to look down blind alleys for longer than I must.” Lucius put away his wand. “Let’s leave the past where it belongs this time, shall we?”
Rabastan looked like he was going to rebel against the suggestion, but ended up nodding. “And let this be the last we see of each other.”
“If you insist.” Malfoy turned on his heel and left.
Severus stood there glaring at the man. Walking up to him, he backhanded him hard enough to make him hit the stonewall. When Rabastan turned to look at him in shock, the dark wizard hissed, “Don’t you think for one iota of time that I will forget what you’ve said here, LeStrange.”
“You have a memory on you,” Rabastan muttered.
Nodding Severus said coolly, “You know what I remember very well?”
Shaking his head, he snarled, “No, tell me.”
“As much as you want to toss whom you see as ‘blood traitors’ out of your door, you owe several life debts to the same men,” he purred, the black irony and humor cold in his eyes. “Saved your sorry life a few times that I can recall, didn’t we? And here you are an ungrateful ingrate just as I thought you would be.” He snorted. “I told Lucius that we should have let you die. I knew it would be a waste of our effort.” He left the mansion, slamming the door behind himself.

Hermione paused in mid-pour of the tea she was serving, looking over to Severus at the name Dolohov. She set the teapot down before it fell from her grasp, looking over to Lucius who was looking through the Death Log.
“There’s no need to check,” Hermione said. “He’s dead.”
Lucius looked over to her. “Says who?”
“Me.” She stood up, trying to camouflage her shaking hands as she did so by wiping her palms on her robes. “He’s dead.”
“You mean to say that you killed him?” Lucius scoffed.
“He was in transport,” she murmured. “The aurors were still shaken, I suppose. The battle had just ended and the dust was settling…” Taking a deep breath, she said in a rush, “They weren’t paying too close attention to him. Dolohov managed to get his hand on a wand and was about to throw a curse when he was hit in the back with the Avada Kedavra.” Her eyes were haunted as she looking into Severus’s. “That’s not one of my proudest moments, but I would do it again in a heartbeat.” Severus gave a curt nod.
Without a by your leave, Hermione went into their bedroom. It was with the nearly silent click of the door closing that Severus turned to look at his friend.
“She was helping me,” he murmured, taking up his own tea. “Hermione had healed me to the best of her abilities at the time and was walking me over to the healer’s tent when she saw what was happening with Dolohov. She put a shielding charm on me, took care of him quickly, and was back before I knew it.”
“And you know this because?”
Severus arched his brow as he said, “Hermione told me.”
“Of course she did,” Lucius muttered. “Bloody Gryffindor.”

Instead of letting the horrible memories of war get to her, Hermione did the one thing she could think of to do—solve the puzzle in hand. Regulus Black and Antonin Dolohov, two dead death eaters, who have supposedly been seen in the township of Oxford, but was it really them? Of course not, but who would going around as a dead man? But not only dead men, but men that would be wanted by the aurors the moment they were found out.
“Clearly an idiot,” she muttered to herself.
“What?” Hermione snapped out of her thoughts, looking over to Severus who was coming over to sit down on their bed next to her. “Who’s the idiot?”
“Whomever it is that is taking polyjuice pretending to be dead death eaters over in Oxford.” She yawned, turning on her side to face her husband. “I have a hypothesis.”
“Which is?” he asked quietly, wrapping an arm around her as he watched her eyes close slowly.
“What if Dennis saw the wizard that killed his brother?” She opened her eyes, looking into his dark orbs. “He was devastated when Colin was killed. He would have chased that man blindly if he thought he could get proof that he was still alive and in country.”
Severus combed her hair steadily and soon was rubbing her back soothingly as he said, “He would at that, but to my knowledge no one knows who killed Colin Creevy. He was hit with a stray curse was what I heard.”
“Dennis got his hands on the Death Log,” she muttered. “It’s when I found out about it seven years ago. He knew who killed his brother.”
Kissing her forehead, he asked the inevitable. “Who was it?”
“Peter Pettigrew.”

It's time once more for the Review Sing-A-Long!! The answer to the last one was "Been Caught Stealin'" by Jane's Addiction. Cookies go out to Flaming Moth of Doom, Narcissas Sister, Tara, Lade Fire Crab, and bloody_blond for getting it right! If I missed you, I'm sorry.
Time for the next song! "And the Earth is a ball of some oceans and some mountains, which is out there reviewing silently in space." Okay here is your hint--this song (one of many, by the way) comes from an animated series which was big in the 1990's. Associated with a big time director, he really had nothing more to do with this series other than having his name in the title. There you go! Hope you get it. Have a great day everyone!!
