Chapter Ten

Hermione sat in front of her parent’s graves, tears absently dripping down her face. How had she found out? The battle had just ended and she was still in the care of a mediwitch when she received the owl. It was forwarded mail from her house. It was a telegram looking for relatives. They had died as a result of a drunk driver t-boning their car. Both had died instantly.

Should she have just left them in England? Would they have lived through the war if she had? They would have at least died knowing who she was, she argued with herself. She sniffled and went looking for a handkerchief, but couldn’t find one in her overstuffed purse.

“Here,” George whispered as he joined her at the graves, giving her a hankie as he sat down next to her. “Your parents?”

She nodded, dabbing at her eyes. “I k-keep thinking if only…if only I had left them where they were…” Hermione sobbed. “B-but I didn’t think…it through! Oh Merlin…They didn’t even know I existed when they died!”

George took her into his arms, rocking her as he studied the simple graves. “Do you want to bring them back?”

She pulled away from him slightly, frowning as she did so. “Of course I do, but, George, death doesn’t work that way. It never has. There is a price to pay for attempting to bring the dead back to life.”

He frowned. “But you said that you would help me bring Fred back.”

She nodded.

“Did you know that there might not be a possibility of bringing him back?”

Sighing heavily she told him, “If there was anything I have been a hundred percent certain of, it was the improbability of Fred being among the living again.”

“Fred is dead,” he whispered.

“I know.” She took his hand, rubbing the back of it with her thumb.

“He’s never coming back,” his voice sounded harsh and filled with sorrow. “I’m never seeing him again.”

“May be,” she murmured. “You never know what death holds until we get there ourselves.” She turned his face towards hers. “It’s a grand mystery, not to mention an adventure just like this life. And if we are fortunate enough, we’ll join up with him for the next adventure as well.”

“I don’t want to be alone!” he whispered.

“You’re not,” she assured him. “You never were and never will be. You have a family that loves you, friends that would do anything to help, and…and you have me.” He blinked at her. “True, we need to get to know each other, but do you think I would have even thought about going to see Lucius Malfoy if I didn’t care for you?”

He kissed her with a hungry desperation that had them both breathless and falling back to the ground within moments. George nuzzled her neck, as they held onto each other tightly.

“So, Miss Granger, would you care to go on this adventure with me?”

“You have to court me properly,” she whispered against his lips.

He froze. “Does this mean no sex?”

She snorted. “Not likely!”

Laughing he rolled her around on the ground, peppering kisses all over her face. It was with joy that she caught his lips with her own and they ended up in a more heated embrace. With some embarrassment, they were kicked out of the cemetery for snogging on the graves. Laughing they ran away from the graveyard, towards their adventure together.
