Hermione was sprawled out on her sofa, a bottle of butterbeer in one hand, the control to her TV in the other. She was rather tired of watching documentaries. It was time for something mind-numbing. Ah! Cartoons….the secret sin of many an adult.

She was interrupted mid-swig by a tapping at her window. She recognized the gaudy, crest-wearing owl immediately, and rolled her eyes as she had to roll off of the couch, and walk to the window.

Bloody owls…couldn’t get a good day’s relaxation….

The large owl hopped in through her open window, and looked around, and gave her an almost disdainful look as it held out its leg for her to retrieve her missive. She untied the satin black ribbon, and offered the owl one of her owl treats. The owl looked at the treat in her hand, and gave a rather short hoot, much like a laugh, and then turned around and left the same way it had come in.

“Yup…definitely belongs to Malfoy…” Hermione said, and unrolled the parchment.

Miss Granger

Oh gods….what did he want?

it has come to my attention that you are unemployed.

Nosy prick.

I am sorry to hear that.

The words appeared on the paper, but all she heard in her head was ‘blah, blah, blah.’

But I have thought of a way that will bring you out of your bout of unemployment, and have a positive affect on my dearest little cousin.

Hmm….she hadn’t totally tuned out…

I would be willing to pay you weekly to be a companion for my cousin. She is cooped up in the Manor all day, and the only outside contact she receives is from her tutors. And while this makes for a very intelligent child, it also makes for a very lonely one.

…he really just now figured that out? Really? Men….

If you would please report to Malfoy Manor at Four this afternoon, we could rationally discuss any duties you would have if you so chose to take the position, as well as answer any questions you may have about the job and your earnings.

She looked over at the clock. One. Well…that still gave her two hours to schmooze on her couch before she had to make an effort to appear. But really….didn’t the man know the word ‘please?’ It really did make a difference. She’d make sure she mentioned it to him when she appeared for her meeting.

Although she didn’t know it, Daisy caused an immediate stir when she entered the forest. The centaurs were unused to humans coming into the forest, and didn’t like her presence. Several large males watched as she took a sip of water from her hip flask.

One large, shaggy black beast of a centaur notched an arrow on his bow.

“I’ll take her out with one swift arrow.” He growled. As he raised his arms to aim another centaur, his hair and body white as snow, stilled him.

“No, Panero. She has not caused any trouble. I sense no harm from this human. We shall watch her, and if she means any part of the forest harm we will deal with her swiftly. But I want no contact with the human.” He said, and walked away. Panero’s brown eyes watched Daisy lean down to smell a flower.

“Tread softly on the soil, human, for if you stumble you will not leave this forest alive…” he said softly, putting his arrow back into his quiver.

Daisy, unaware of the drama, reached out to run her hand over the trunk of a tree. She felt alive again!

There were a few things about her that many didn’t know. Along with being half magical and half native, Daisy was what the Native people she lived around liked to call a Flower Healer. The very ground she walked on, if it came in contact with her bare skin, could go from brittle dead weeds to lush, green grass and flowers in seconds. She had a very base, natural magic that made her a whiz with greenery. But it came with a bit of a price. She almost needed to be around plants and flowers and the like. If she were away for long periods of time (as she had been recently) she began to grow restless, like a caged wild animal. She had only been able to last so long because of the sheer novelty of the past few weeks.

And while it seemed that she could just stroll the Malfoy Gardens…it wasn’t so simple. The Gardens were still fenced in….still caged. She needed the raw, unbridled magic of the forest to renew her magic. And it turn everything she touched would thrive.

She found the stream with relative ease, and after a few simple tests with a water kit she carried with her, she refilled her canteen, and set about making her campsite before the sun fell. She knew nothing of the weather here, but she was fairly certain that even in summer the nights could get fairly crisp.

She found several long, fairly straight limbs, and immediately set herself up a teepee. She had a cover stored in her magical knapsack, a gift from her father that magically shrank whatever she put in it so that she didn’t have to use her wand. She pulled out the large, waterproof canvas sheet, and set about wrapping and tying it to the poles she had set up.

It took her a good two hours to set it up right, and when she was done, she stepped back to admire her handiwork. It wasn’t a huge thing, but it was large enough for her to lie down inside comfortably. She had set it up on top of a smaller cloth, so that she wouldn’t have to sleep directly on the ground.

“Cliché, but functional.” She said with a shrug.

Once her shelter was built, she immediately pulled out a small shovel, and set about digging a small fire pit. She cleared away the leaves and debris, and made sure her fire was far enough away not to be a hazard to her tent/teepee, but close enough that she wouldn’t have to hike to go to bed. She hiked back and forth between the river and her campsite to find large rocks to line her pit with, and that took a good hour as well. By the time she was ready to actually gather her wood, she was covered with a thin film of sweat. She would have to bathe before she slept…

As she picked up her last bit of kindling for the day, her stomach began to growl. She hadn’t eaten since lunch and with all of the work she’d done to set up her campsite, she was hungry! She plopped down in front of her teepee, and pulled her bag close to her, to examine the food she had brought from the kitchen. She pulled out a crisp green apple, and began to munch happily, looking around her beautiful little piece of land. She felt like one of her ancestors…wild and free.

But she was worried about her cousin. She had left a letter in her room for him and told one of the kitchen elves to tell him of it when he asked about her. But she was worried he wouldn’t understand. He wasn’t like her. He was a white man and although she cared for him greatly, he would never understand how she felt.

She just hoped he wasn’t angry.

~~

Lucius stared at the elf in disbelief.

“What do you mean she’s not here??” he asked. The little elf was trembling, terrified of its master’s ire.

“The young Miss is coming down to the kitchen to get foods, sir…She is telling Mint she leave letter for Master in her room. Then she is leaving…Mint knows not where…”

Shit. Shit, shit, shit.

He had twenty minutes before he was supposed to meet with Hermione, and Daisy was gone! Where the hell would a thirteen year old girl go? He disappeared with an angry pop, and reappeared in her room.

There, on the odds and ends table she had near her door, was an envelope with his name written in her messy scrawl.

He opened the envelope, and pulled out the single sheet letter inside.

My Dear Cousin,

I have had much fun and many adventures over the past few weeks, but I am growing restless on the inside of this large house. It’s true that we have been shopping a few times, but that isn’t enough. I’m an interesting girl when it comes to my outside time…

She told him of her need to be outdoors, and ended saying she would be back in a few days. He let the letter fall from his hands, and it fluttered to the ground harmlessly.

The little fool! She had gone off into woods that she knew nothing about, and she was expecting him to just roll over and shrug? Hell no! She had no idea what sort of creatures lurked in the forest behind the Manor! He was going to have to go after her, damn it!

As he was immediately preparing a list of things he would have to take to retrieve his fool of a cousin, he was interrupted by a small tug on his robes. He looked down at the small elf standing there.

“What?” he barked.

“Mitten hates to interrupt Master…but Miss Granger is being at the door, sir.” The little elf squeaked. Lucius growled softly.

“Send her in….maybe the all-knowing Granger has some input.”
