Battle

The day seems to speed by as we practice. All of us trying not to think of what is coming. Marking the time by the gradual changes of the ceiling in the Great Hall. Watching as the subtle darkening foretells that the time is near. Dumbledore and Harry return to wait. Everyone bracing themselves for battle, just as the sun begins to set.

Suddenly an explosion rips through the air as the Death Eaters force the gate out of their way, so they can have access to Hogwarts Grounds. One of them yells…

“MorsMordre!” sending the dark mark into the sky, wanting to be sure everyone knows they have arrived.

I can’t help myself. I hurry over to look out a window. All I can see are dark cloaks and masks. There is no way to tell one from another. If he is here I can not say.

As they reach the massive entrance to the castle they stop, raising their wands together they exclaim-

“Alohamora!”

The door stood strong as Flitwik had braced it closed then charmed it against opening until Dumbledore asked for it to open.

Their way being barred the Death Eaters started firing random spells at the castle windows hoping for a lucky shot. I quickly pulled back, looking around to see all the resigned faces around me.

Moments later we could hear the first answering call from our side, as spells began to rain down from the towers above. I could hear screams as some of the spells found their mark. The spells were flying in all directions as our side leaned out windows and over the walls trying to hit anyone they can.

We were still safely in the Great Hall, which was upsetting me, as I hear screams coming from both sides now. I know our waiting is part of the plan but I don’t like sitting around while the others are fighting. I glance over to Ron seeing him clutching his wand so tight I’m afraid he is going to snap it. We continue to listen to the fight as we wait for our cue.

A loud rumbling noise, almost like thunder is suddenly heard over the cacophony. It steadily gets louder- boom, Boom, BOOM! as if a storm were approaching. Looking out the window quickly I see a terrible sight. A giant was crossing the grounds toward the castle. The floor shakes as he gets closer. I put my hand out to balance myself just as he stops at the front of the building. With an almighty THUMP! the massive doors fall under his fist. The giant assesses his work before stepping back to reach up to the tower trying to grab anyone he can.

As he leans back we hear more crashing coming from the Dark Forest. I turn to look, fearful it will be another giant. It is but not one under Voldemort’s control. It’s Hagrid’s brother-Grawp. Oh dear, he is going to try to fight the bigger giant. Oh, what if he gets hurt? Hagrid would be so upset, he was just beginning to get Grawp to understand how to be nice. The two eye each other, then without warning they attack. The noise is deafening as they hit and throw each other, eventually rolling off into the forest.

After they have disappeared the Death Eaters closest to the doors run in, heading straight for the Great Hall. They obviously know their mission, which means it must be Malfoy and some of the Slytherins. Time for us to get involved. We step up making a circle around Harry and Dumbledore. If they want to get to them they need to get through us first.

As they enter the room with their wands at the ready we are prepared hitting them with a disarming spell. The first few in the door lose their wands. As they look around for them their masks slip. I see Goyle, Crabbe and Nott fumbling over to where the wands had landed. I don’t see Malfoy or Severus, but I know they are coming.

We continue to stand at the ready as another wave of Death Eaters enter the room. This time they are more prepared sending spells in the door before they bring themselves into the open. As the dozen or so masked men enter the room I can’t help but search the eyes looking for him. At the back of the group I finally spot him. Looking at me in an accessing way.

I nod my head subtlety to let him know I am fine, seeing his head nod back. I am so busy looking at Severus I almost forgot the battle being fought around us as a spell flies past my head moments before an Order member falls to the ground.

I quickly jump into the battle shooting spells left and right as we try to hold them back. Trying to keep them away from Harry. Every so often I feel a spell brush close by me. When I look up I see Severus hurrying to turn away before someone sees that he is casting spells to protect me.

The battle goes on for what feels like hours. People from both sides are falling, some never to stand again. I struggle to pay attention instead of worrying about Severus. He had temporarily disappeared from my sight which left me anxious. I didn’t have time to try and find him because Malfoy picked that moment to take his mask off revealing himself.

“Give up Granger, you aren’t going to win,” he taunted. “Why don’t you be a good little Mudblood and step out of my way.”

“Never you filthy scum. I am fighting for my friend, who is more worth my life than you are.”

“Is that so? Well in that case- Avada…”

“Draco, you are here to capture Potter not play with Muggle borns. Now get over here and help me,” Severus ordered.

“Yes Sir,” Malfoy says as he turns from me with regret.

I can’t look at Severus now for fear I will run to him. I was so afraid Malfoy would actually finish the spell taking me away forever. I turn my attention to the nearest Death Eater to join the battle once again.

“Just hand over Potter and we will go away,” I hear Severus say in a cold voice. If I didn’t know he was only playing a part I would be worried. I am still not sure what he is going to do once they get Harry though. I can not believe he would hand him over to his death, but I don’t know how he will avoid it.

“We’re not giving him up. You’ll have to get past us all first,” I hear Lupin exclaim.

“Stop! I won’t have you fighting like this for me,” Harry yelled. “Stop fighting and I will come with you.” He said his expression wary.

“What?” Ron spun to look at his best friend, getting hit in the side with a stunning spell. Falling over, his eyes still searched around him for his friend wanting to believe he was not just going to give himself up like that.

“You heard me!” Harry yelled louder as he looked Severus in the face. “I will come, but you need to stop fighting,” he pleaded.

“Everyone back!” Severus called.

“I don’t believe him. This is a trick.” Malfoy looked uncertain.

“This is not a trick. I will come,” Harry dropped his wand to prove he wasn’t up to anything. “I won’t have anymore people hurt in my name.”

By now the Hall was quiet as everyone stood staring at the sight of Harry walking out of the circle to join Malfoy and Severus. Quickly the Death Eaters formed a circle of their own around him in case we had any ideas about getting him back.

“Malfoy stay here with these people,” He sneered, “ while I take Potter to the Master.”

“Why do I have to stay here? It was my job to bring him back,” he whined.

“You captured him, now I need you to stay and make sure things continue to go our way.”

“Just make sure HE knows that.”

“You will get your reward don’t worry. If you stay here the Master may even give you a bigger reward,” Severus states as he pushes Harry out of the room.
